LaCie launches 7.5TB NAS

There's one thing that always seem to ring true when it comes to computers, you can never have enough storage space and it seems like LaCie has tried to follow this with its latest 5big Network NAS, as it will be available in sizes from 2.5 to 7.5TB.

The 2.5 and 5TB models aren't such a big deal, as the 5big Network has five hot-swappable drive bays, but going to 7.5TB requires five of the latest Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 drives, as these are the only 1.5TB drives currently on the market.

Feature wise the 5big Network is pretty impressive as well, as not only does it have a Gigabit Ethernet port which LaCie claims can manage 12-16MB/s writes and 22-32MB/s reads, but it also has three eSATA ports for additional drives as well as a USB 2.0 port. The rear ports can also be used for backing up onto the 5big Network form external drives.

You can also rest assure that your data will be safe as the 5big Network supports a wide range of RAID options including RAID 0, RAID 10, RAID 5 (with or without a spare) and RAID 6 and unless you run RAID 0, it's very improbable that you would ever lose any data stored on the 5big Network. LaCie also supplies three licences each of PC and Mac network backup software.

We're not convinced it's great value for money for the average home user, but we'd expect it to be a tempting device for many smaller businesses that needs a solid backup solution. The 2.5TB model starts at US$899.99, with the 5TB version coming it at $1,399.00 and finally the 7.5TB model at $1,899.00. Hardly cheap, but then again, it's not like LaCie has a lot of competition in the 7.5TB market at the moment. All models will be available later this month.

it is 7.5 TB storage using 5 HDD X 1.5 TB

i have read artilce a while ago we should see 2-4TB solo HDD by 2010

utilising some kind of tech to double the storage per inch in HDD

For that price... are they including the hard drives as well?

If not, wouldn't it be more affordable to use some old computer with linux and make it into a backup server with a raid controller?
