Awesome explosion demonstration in Stargate Worlds

Recommended Posts

I got into the Stress Test for SGW. And while its 'ok' so far, they are basically nowhere. Tons of crashes, most of the quests are screwed up, and once you get out of the starting area, no quests at all.

Its not even in Closed Beta Yet? I dont think you get what a Stress Test is testing for.. its got nothing to do with quests and its meant to get alot of crashes :)

Anywayz, the very very good thing about SGW is that they are using the open beta as a 'trial' for the full game. So they arnt doing like Warhammer where they invite afew people in for along time.. they are going to have a open beta right before launch, so if you're even alittle bit interested you can go and try the full game before it launches for free.

meh.. explosion as so-so

but to me more realistic they could have taken into account the difference between the speed of sound and the speed of light. you should see the explosion a good few seconds before any sound of it reaches you.

Yes, definitely.

Most games seem to forget about that.

The sound isn't realistic. If the ship was actually in space, then it would make no sound at all. If it was floating in high atmosphere, then the sound would take a long time to travel to the surface. Just another game. :hmmm:

So what? Realism isn't the goal of the game. People would much rather see and hear things instantaneously. It's a game, not a reality simulator.

So, as I said, and which you repeated, it's just a game. I find it exciting when games try going beyond "fun gameplay" and create believable scenarios, I think there is room for that, and if that explosion had made no sound it would definitely had stirred my curiosity for the game. Most movies sacrifice a lot of realism for faster or more intense action, but at the expense of suspension of disbelief, others go the other way, and those that manage to draw me in while being intense or interesting are those that really impress.

I'm not saying realism is the only thing to strive for, but different games for different kinds of entertainment. I don't play Team Fortress 2 for the realism, for instance. On the other hand, Freespace 2 had some of the most impressive and realistic space explosions I have ever seen; sometimes it would take minutes to get from one objective to another, just because the areas were somewhat realistically huge; and I remember being in total awe. And then there's every other game that does visually big explosions with no, dare I say, substance. It doesn't mean they're bad games, just that they don't stir that sense of awe that drew me towards more realistic games. So that explains my disappointement after reading the title "Awesome explosion demonstration in Stargate Worlds". I hope. :p

    • Remarkably based article from Garter - apparently there IS someone working there that actually understands mainframe systems.
