5.1 speakers...does it worth it?

At the current time I have a 2.1 Logitech speakers which sound pretty good. For a while I've been interested in buying a 5.1 set, but of course buying such set costs money. So my question is, does it worth buying it? I mean, does it really sounds better?

If your playing games 5.1 might be worth it...For music not really.

if you have it spanned correctly, yes, its great. But you need a 6-channel sound card to be able to play it.

It's sounds best in games, and it shines in true 5.1 tracks like in Video/Audio DVDs. For normal MP3 files (stereo), a decent 2.1 setup is the way to go.

5.1 is only good if it's set up really well and I'm not sure how to do it and the way you have your TV/desk/PC/whatever positioned it might be difficult.

I'd rather have stereo headphones for games though. Much easier to hear where people are coming from and you get full immersion anyway. Surround sound is for TV/movies imo.

I managed to get a fairly decent and cheap 5.1 set from Creative for ?50 and I'm using it as a 2.1 setup (It's a bit easier especially now that I'm at uni) since I just gave up with the whole 5.1 thing.

No, what may be worth it is a better 2.1 set.

The best speaker setup for listening to music is stereo. Not 2.1. Stereo, with two woofers instead of one (what you call a subwoofer in those cheap 2.1 setups are actually just woofers).

Well that tends to be more expensive.
