Welcome to Neowin 5

Well, I don't see the big deal ... like mentioned, how much time do people REALLY HONESTLY spend on the front page?

I used to do 80% of the article reading from the page, only opening the article if I wanted to read more AND it didn't fit on the front page. I'd say that was several minutes reading per a day assuming they had fresh content.

Besides, the point was to get people interested in that content so talking about how ppl would skip to the forums anyway isn't the point. They're supposed to be enticing us to use the front page.

I would spend most of my NeoWin time on the front page. I checked it every day. I took a look at it this morning and it just turned me off completely that the news stories are truncated.

PLEASE CHANGE THINGS before I decide to go elsewhere!

Guys how the hell are we ever supposed to maintain Neowin without ads for crying out loud.

This site isn't free to run you know, gawd.. think about everything else we give back for the "intrusion" of 3 ads per page!

Neobond totally has a point. Unless everyone is sending in a portion of their paychecks each month to Neowin then we will need ads.

How in the world do you think a site like this stays up? We don't charge every member for membership, so we need them and it's pointless and works against us to block them.

Just on a personal note I do appreciate all the feedback that's given but I appreciate it more when it's not suffixed with 'do this or I'll leave the site'. Demands are hugely unhelpful when compared to the majority who are being constructive in their opinions.

Yes indeed. I cannot imagine the cost of maintaining a site this large. Subscriptions help but not enough.

By all means have the ads!

Neowin should be able to at least break even. What everyone here disagrees here is with having the ad in the middle of the page!!!

I wouldn't be against 5 ads instead of the three we have now, so long as they are all unobtrusive.

If you look at the AdBlockers thread you'll find that the ads we had on Shift were also unacceptable to the majority, ok.. some, while Neowin has the fewest ads of any of our competitors and size.

Coupled with the credit crunch, I can tell you that we get at least 25% less than we did a year ago and that means we're borrowing, not even breaking even.

Remember that we just bought a new server FOR YOU GUYS and we actually have to pay for this Finity update (which isn't free)

I agree that the ads in shift where not a problem and even stood up for Neowin on that case, becuase i never found them intusive. However, this latest move has caused the front page to look tacky and also makes me want to turn away from using the front page, because that ad is slap bang in the middle of my reading area.

I also understand that you need ad revenue to keep the site running etc, however, you have survived this long with the ads where they where... so i question, are you just looking to try and boost your revenue, by providing more ads in the line of site for people reading, especially as they might accidently click on them, when they didnt want to!

I think they are ok, I don't really see them as much of a problem to be honest.

Guys, guys, why all the fuss?

I just found out I can get a Wii and great savings on my car insurance. See, ads aren't that bad.

In all seriousness though, we may not like the ads, but without them this site will surely die. It's a small price to pay for all that we get here, think about it.

Nobody seems to answer one little gripe I have.

Whay is Apple listed above Microsoft and Linux in the news menu? Its not alphabetical...so there must be a reason?

Just niggling at me is all...

There probably is no reason other than they were typed out in no particular order and then no one sought to re-order them. It's a low-priority fix I'm sure we'll get to.

Lame.

Heh, honestly, it seems like this would be the main reason to subscribe lol.

No. The main reason to subscribe would be to help support Neowin & help keep the website going.

I despise ads as much as the next person, but no way will having ads stop me from being a subscriber or stop me from using Neowin.

The amount of news & computer help we get here is worth far more than the little amount of ads on the site; no matter where they are placed.

I hate the square ad in the middle, but it is there for a reason.

Also, some are forgetting, Neobond has proposed the idea of maybe having an ad-free option for subscribers, costing a bit more money. That idea is not finalised yet & may not happen, but it's nice to know there is thought of it.

Normally I don't care about the ads on Neowin because they were subtle, and I always had them white listed. This new ad in the middle though, I can't take it. It's way too huge, and in the middle of everything. It's distracting and irritating. I want Neowin to do well, that's why I gave them my money (I don't even use any of the subscription features). But that one ad is just so bad that I have no choice but to turn the blocker on.

+1, and even WITH that relatively large had smack-dab right in the middle of my screen; it's still not as intrusive as some of the ads I've seen on other websites.

I like the improved width

A quick question about intellitxt... Apparently that's no longer used, but why is noscript showing that as something it's blocking on the mainpage? I've temporarily enabled it to see where it is and found nothing :s

Also, what's up the "Get Impulse Today" and "Macs? On Neowin?" banners splitting the first and seconds news articles... Looks like a mistake as opposed to a design choice... Also, just clicked on that impulse banner, nice advert on the impulse page... Wouldn't that be borderline NSFW ad?

Not sure if you've noticed, but I've listed Apple first in the main drop down menu... That'll show em ;)

I'm not complaining about the number of ads, but more so the placement. If they were a little less in the way, I would gladly turn off my adblockers and scripts to support neowin. You see my only problem is, if I do, then I get 50% of my page taken away for some "BUY THIS" ad. Very distracting.

Ambiance's picture 3 or so pages ago is exactly what I, and many others are talking about, and how to fix it.

    • If possible change your subscription to a Microsoft 365 Personal Classic Account and no AI. And it is only $69.99 a year.
    • That's (at least partially) on 7-zip; Nanazip (7-zip fork) adds itself properly to Context menus.
    • We have disabled advertising in the forums for now for an undetermined period. If you feel like you get a lot of value out of the site please do whitelist ads on the news articles, and/or consider getting a subscription, we offer two tiers, one at: $14 per year (support the site for just over a dollar a month) or the $28/year tier (just over $2/month) that disables advertising and affiliate link tracking throughout the site (so also on the news side). We also have a 'Buy us a coffee' page if you just want to make a one-time donation. I am not mincing words when I say it is becoming harder and harder to monetize publications like Neowin, it's a fact of life that when we can no longer afford to pay for everything we'll go like many other sites already have. It doesn't have to cost you anything There are other ways to support Neowin too, like posting on topic content in the forums (technical support/questions/helping others) and sharing our news articles.. this costs nothing but your time and is just as important as subscribing or making a monetary donation! Anyway thanks for your time and continued support of Neowin. Now in our 26th year, and hopefully many more! For all the lurkers out there that whitelist us, make a free member account, and see fewer (only inline) ads on the news side

It now looks like the same product, not a separate dashboard. Pairing is one tap and zero typing: the generated WebUI password is now copyable, and the QR code carries the credentials — scanning it from your phone logs straight in (no typing the IP or password), then drops the credentials from the address bar. Search Two new providers: RuTor (CIS sources, no login, via a public TorAPI relay) and Torrents-CSV. Results are sorted by seeders (healthiest first), and each search now times out after 15 s so one dead provider can't hang the UI. Files & trackers Per-file priority is back: right-click a file in the detail panel to set Skip / Low / Normal / High. Rename an individual file inside a torrent (double-click or the file menu), separate from renaming the torrent. Remove a tracker from a torrent (the ✕ on a tracker row); adding was already there. Smart Paste on Ctrl+V — paste a magnet, a 40-char info-hash, or a .torrent URL straight from the clipboard and it's added immediately (text fields still paste text normally). Covers & titles Anime fansub naming ([Group] Title - NN) now resolves to the right show. Audio channel layouts in titles (DDP5.1, 7.1, …) are stripped so they don't pollute cover matching. Under the hood The legacy QWidget interface is gone. QML had been the only UI since 3.0.0 (reachable old code lived behind a hidden --legacy flag); with parity confirmed, the entire QWidget layer — main window, every dialog, the theme manager — was removed (~13,400 lines). The four restored actions above were features that backend already supported but the QML port had never wired. macOS: the WebUI password hash moved out of the keychain into app settings, so launching the app no longer pops a login-keychain password prompt on unsigned builds. The actual password still lives in the keychain. Cleanup: ~400 orphaned translation strings and a batch of dead code removed; internal duplication collapsed; an ARCHITECTURE.md added for contributors. Unit / security / memory tests and the ASan/UBSan/TSan sanitizers stay green.
