ATi Catalyst 8.10 released

Recommended Posts

huh

the last one was 8.9

it should be 9.0 not 8.10 which is 8.1 really >.<

The primary version number is based on the version (year possibly too?), and the second number is the month it was released. From what I understand they do a monthly release. Thus their revision numbers for this version will go from 8.1 (January) - 8.12 (December). There release version for January 2009 should be 9.1 if I'm not mistaken.

Thus 8.10 = Version 8 Month 10 (October).

THX

that make some sense

Currently AMD does not provide any driver support for Mobility Radeon™ products. All driver and technical support for Mobility Radeon™ products is provided by the original laptop or notebook manufacturer. The drivers that are available for download at ati.amd.com are for desktop products only.

This is why I absolutely hate ATI/AMD. ATI isn't providing support, and neither is Gateway, my manufacturer.

My next laptop is going to be Nvidia.

Anyone know if you have to have the CCC installed to modify the fan speed on the 48xx cards -- or can you do this with just the basic driver installed?

I'm guessing you need the CCC as you control the fan speed in the "ATI Overdrive" section.

Try this: http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool.php

I've done something similiar to install Catalyst 8.8 on my Macbook Pro (ATI X1600) and it works like a charm.

I have an 8800m GTS 512 in my laptop. Nvidia don't support it, HP do. Laptop graphics chips come under the responsibility of the manufacturer of the laptop, not the manufacturer of the graphics chip - same for ATi and nVidia.

damn so the only cards to get fan control are the 4xxx series what a f**ken crock i think i'll be stickin to just the driver + ATI tray tools for my fan speed control then

>scratch<

i've not found any mention of fan speed control for 4xxx cards only so i'm assuming its for any radeon with an adjustable fan on it

It does if you use Ubuntu (Intrepid): http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=arti...t_811&num=1

Though I dislike having one linux distro take precedence over others.

Cool, I suppose they simply didn't update their website. I don't think it should matter what distro you use for x drivers ;)

The primary # does indicate the year. The first Catalyst driver ever was labelled "02.1" as it was released in 2002. (When the Radeon 9700 ruled as king. How time flies!)

The secondary number indicates the release but ATI has stated it does not necessarily indicate the month. That is, they've always released 12 drivers in a year but they do not necessarily release one once a month.

Not really, the 8.10 linux driver on AMD's website does not support xorg 7.4. Canonical (i.e. Ubuntu) have been given a beta that has the required support, and that's through the restricted drivers option in Intrepid. There's a difference in version numbers too, the version Ubuntu has is 0.001 higher than the one the AMD website provides (8.543 vs 8.542, I believe). From skimming over Phoronix's forums, people have largely been unsuccessful to get this driver to work on other distros (Fedora, Gentoo, etc).

    • There really isn't anything magical about the low latency profile, other OS's do this as well. All they're doing is using your CPUs boost clock options in a more smarter way.
    • So we shouldn't have the option because of people using their laptops on battery? OK? LOL
    • If you hear that fans for a limited time the CPU spikes to open a app I don't think the problem is with the software. There shouldn't be enough time spent at the higher clocks to produce enough heat to peak the fans. Maybe it's time to crack those dell laptops open and clean them out?
