ATi Catalyst 8.10 released

Recommended Posts

Still unstable under Vista x64 with an HD 3200. (The display driver crashes frequently, and occasionally goes into a loop of like 6 or 7 crashes followed by a BSOD. Just like the last two version.)

Back to an earlier version for me.

How on earth can they release this crap? It's apparently a common issue with my tablet.

Hell, I actually had to reformat after the 8.9 install screwed over my machine with BSODs on startup (Manually removing the driver itself from a recovery console didn't fix it. System restore didn't fix it. I have no idea how on earth AMD accomplished that one.)

Edit: Found a post online that suggested disabling Power Play will solve the issue. Might as well try it.

For some reason, I now can't use the Aero theme. Heck, it's not even on the list (in appearance settings).

Is that a problem with the drivers, or could be something else... even though except Inno and these drivers, I didn't installed/uninstalled/changed anything else recently.

ps.

Never noticed how nice/unique Vista looks with the windows classic theme :o

Try to reset your Windows Experience Index (Control Panel - System). And yeah, windows classic is what I keep coming back to every time :-).

I disagree, it looks like they didn't give much attention to it. The interface was really designed with Aero in mind and Classic feels tacked-on. For instance, even with no restore animations, there is a slight delay between clicking on a thumbnail and the window actually appearing. This is used in Aero for the animation, but it has no use in Classic. The Windows Explorer has quite a few panels which in Aero are clearly distinguished by color or borders, but in Classic everything is in white which looks cheap and more confusing.

Granted, it's maybe not as bad as the Vista basic look, but I wouldn't use it more than one minute when I could use Aero instead.

it should be 9.0 not 8.10 which is 8.1 really >.<

Although already explained for ATI in particular and where their versions numbers come from others do this without basing it on date. Version numbers are not decimal numbers. Its major.minor. Eg it could be major 8 minor 10.

8.1 != 8.10 as it is not a decimal.

Nero is prime example of versions numbers that do this.

8.15.367.22 is greater than 8.1.6.3. Forget decimal and just think of each number as its own

You can always download the modded drivers.. :)

Thanks for this. I went there and got the modded drivers for my laptop. Lenovo doesn't seem to update them often and while i don't think my e-penis grew anymore, things certainly "feel" better because Aero animations seem to run better now.

I have an older Compaq laptop which has an old x200m gpu, and they stopped updating it in 2006, and I can still install the latest drivers and Catalyst without using those modded drivers. 8.10 is pretty decent.

I think i have the same issue, i installed 8.10, after install it require reboot, it POSTs, detects drives, etc, as soon as it starts the windows splash screen it just flashes a blue screen real fast, than reboots. says windows has encountered an error....

i chose "Last Known Goof", and all versions of Safe Mode, and it still just flashes a BSOD to quick to read, and resets. repeat ad naseum,

my question - how did you disable Power Play if it won't boot?

You have the same problem that I had when I tried to install 8.9.

Despite my best efforts, I was unable to fix it, and had to reformat. Even removing the atikdmag driver, running System Restore, etc. didn't solve the problem.

Windows wasn't even writing memory.dmp files for me!

that's just nuts. i just got this PC, ordered to spec, I had been updating drivers, installing anit-virus and whatnot, but the system had been stable (hard to say after only a day or two). Everything appeared to be fine, reboots after every new install, no problems. Then I installed the new catalyst 8.10 (system came with 8.05 or is it 8.5?). KABLOOIE.

I can't believe a graphics driver could toast your OS!! I have always been nvdia before this system, i rarely had any problems with their drivers, xcept for occasional CTd's during games. Nothing like this. This is insane.

Thanks for your input. I am still kinda in shock....

However, since ATI is using this as their versioning system, would it really kill them, knowing that there is 12 months, to add an additional decibel?

8.01, 8.02, 8.03, 8.04, 8.05, 8.06, 8.07, 8.08, 8.09, 8.10, 8.11, 8.12.

It would also make it show up properly in list view too, in case anybody archives the bloody things.

I can't find the Catalyst Control Center™ Fan speed control. :ermm:

It's in the ATI Overdrive section.

Also, I think VPU Recover will be great for XP users. The entire system shouldn't be brought down by a video driver crash now. :)

Same here..i have FuSi laptop with same gpu and i get always latest drivers at AMD site.

It's not a monthly versioning system. ATI usually releases 13 drivers in a year. However, there's nothing stopping them from releasing 3 or 300.

Most companies follow: Version.update.revision.patch.build

So, in theory it.s 8.1.1.1.1, some companies use a comma or dash to delimit, some add letters. Yes, I have seen some things as 4.12.4.8.39f, 19089120 or even Jan-15-2005-1.

    • Wow, spoken like a true blind hater, you don't even provide arguments. Please, go check my comment above to @seacaptain and you'll find out why what you say doesn't make sense in this context...
    • Get used to this, with AI tooling now uncovering new vulns and getting them exploitable far faster than has ever been possible before software is going to need to be updated far more frequently. Back in the day it may take reseachers weeks or months to do what AI can now do in hours. Once its a threat is discovered it's weaponsized far more quickly, meaning you simply can't be waiting 2, 3, 4 weeks to deploy a patch, it needs to be patched immediately. Going to be interesting handling this in the enterprise space where traditionally patching has been steady, but very staged (and rightly so up until now), that is going to have to change.
    • You don't need to "close all browser sessions constantly" or wait for updates to install. The updates download in the background while you use the browser, without interrupting you, they install automatically the next time you launch the app. And they install very fast (depending on your storage speeds, of course), you have to wait at most 2-3 extra seconds, if any. Seems like you haven't used Edge in a loooooooong time...
