Adds Windows Connect Now (WCN) to simplify Wi-Fi Configuration.

I thought that was already available in Vista RTM? My Linksys WRT600N router can do it and i even see the option in "Network" where i just type in a PIN and auto configures the system.

Did you right click and choose Run as Administrator? If you just launch it nothing will happen.

1. Save the file in notepad as Vista SP2.bat

2. Right click on the batch file an run as admin.

3. Go to Microsoft Update and check for updates

4. Install patch KB955430

5. Restart if necessary

6. Go back to Microsoft Update and download and install SP2 ~292MB.

The above works or at least it did yesterday unless MS did something to stop it which I doubt. This should work on al versions of Vista as long as you have SP1 installed.

I can't see what's the rush for these betas of service packs. I know I wont risk my stable Vista setup until it's final :o

Besides, are they planning features for it or just the collection of patches up to now? I'm assuming the latter

I have had no problems with it. There are very few added features most of it is for security. There is no one forcing anyone to try this. :)

For those of you that it isnt working for. I had to hide all of the updates i didnt want to install, specifically the malicious software removal tool. Once I right clicked on the update and selected hide update, i hit the refresh button and the update came back, i hid it again and refreshed and then came the stack update.

After i installed the stack update, i had to hide the malicious software update again and the SP2 file was there.

Hope this helps.

Edit: Obviously you also have to run the bat file before all of this will work.

Worked fine for me yesterday.

What does black screen say when you run it?

Probably got file *.bat.txt

If you use Notebook and save the code as a .bat file only you should get a file that looks like this:

bat.png

You then right click on that batch file and run it as administrator.

it is useful

Haha, I knew someone would bring that up. some months I install it, some months I dont... I couldnt tell you why. I decided not to this month and found that hiding the update worked for installing SP2.

I have mixed first impressions though.

Boot up seems to be a bit faster as well as starting applications. however I have a full gigabit LAN with a NAS and have seen the transfer speeds from the NAS drop down to about 2.5MB/sec way down from what i was getting before.

    • I can agree that it is being used in a small capacity. I worked for a company where their engineers still used XP, and when asked why it was because their sensor software wasn't compatible with newer operating systems and the software was discontinued so they couldn't upgrade the software. Given that the sensors were still in use by companies, they had to continue using XP to support the sensor, otherwise the price to the company would have gone into the millions or billions. Our response was simple: Ok, you can keep the XP machine. But we're removing it from the network. "But then it can't access the Internet or folder shares!" Yup, kinda the point. If someone wants to continue using an unsecure OS they can do, I have no problem with that. But it should be isolated. Simple. I had a fight with a guy in the engineering department for weeks before he finally relented. But we digress.   What do I plan on doing to commemorate the anniversary? Nothing. I have fond memories of the OS, but at the end of the day it's just an OS. If I had some time I might see if I could install it on my Raspberry Pi for a laugh. But my reflex memory with today's OS ideas would probably get me frustrated and I'd uninstall it after 5 mins.
