GTA IV for PC (official)

Then tell me why it would happen RIGHT after the driver update without changing anything else? And the nVidia drivers install more than just a few .inf files, plenty of files within the installation could be causing it.

I'm not sure it started happening to me after installing the beta video card drivers.

After I updated to the latest nVidia Beta drivers, my In-game graphic settings keep resetting each time I start the game - Anyone else had that problem?

I have that too .. After installing the 180,84 drivers, my ingame settings keep resetting every time I want to play...

And the only way to get the game running smooth is to set everything low @ 800x600 ......

And even then I got framedrops!!!!! Don't tell me my system isn't good enough ...

I bought the game cause I love playing GTA. But I'm very disappointed ...

My system specs are:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 3,2 Ghz

4 GB Ram

MSI GTX 280 1 GB @ 650 Mhz (pre-overclocked)

To fix the game settings not saving you have to delete settings.cfg in your appdata/rockstar folder.

It will re-create when you load the game, set your settings how you like, then it should. Worked for me at least, and it seems to be the general fix posted on forums.

Oh thank you ever so much! Was driving me up the wall.

Take a look at this. I ran two tests with different settings. Somehow, I managed to get less FPS with lower settings.

Would everyone feel better if they renamed "medium" to "high"? Heck, would you feel better if they called it ultra? What about "your graphics card makes your penis larger"? Would that make you feel better?

I want games that push systems. It is not about the settings, but how it looks. Crysis looked 50% better at medium that almost all other games on high (or ultra, or OMG your penis is so large). The same can be said about GTA.

I want games I can play.

If I wanted to look at a slideshow, I'd do that.

I've been playing it more now and so far I've managed to tweak it for the better. Still lacks FSAA and a desperate need to solve the texture issues on HIGH settings especially with regards to VRAM usage which is extremely unacceptable.

The game seems very temperamental.

Heh, I guess so.

yeah on the same settings mine either runs perfectly smooth or nearly unplayable. really annoying.

Now that's just plain weird!

The only thing that consistently shows an increase in FPS is a better CPU.

I've overclocked my E2200 from 2.2 ghz to 3.0 ghz and gained around 15 fps.

People getting the most FPS's from this game are the ones who have Quad Cores.

I'm tempted to overclock my E6750 @ 2.66 GHz (stock). Of course, that means I'll have to buy a new HSF as I currently use the one that came with it.

The problem with GTA IV is it's a CPU-dependant game. It may not look pretty like Crysis, but it sure does a lot of CPU intensive things like advanced AI and physics. That alone is enough to bring down the latest dual core offerings of Intel and AMD. It makes sense too. Most people with quad core CPUs get better performance in GTA IV despite having the same or similarly spec'd video cards.

I'm sorry. The game is really good but even on high the graphics aren't all that impressive at all... comparing to crysis is just silly.. Other huge open world games like Far Cry 2 look MUCH better. Granted there isn't as much going on but fc2 does have very advanced weather and fire physics and such.

gta4 could have been optimized quite a bit better, I know I am not going to get 60 fps on a very complex game like this with my dual core but I should at least be able to get playable fps on a game that plays on a 200 dollar console. This processor handles every other game out flawlessly.

Run it at 720p on medium like the xbox or 640p like the ps3. Your frame-rates should be fine (30fps). The XBOX or PS3 could not handle the game at the settings you are trying to run it.

    • they should stop making bad games that no one asked for
    • Nice rant! Expletive after expletive after expletive. Poor petal, I've touched a nerve. Would you like a tissue to wipe those tears away. Btw, nice one calling Neowin trash. Why would you stick around when you disrespect this site and the people behind it? Just go away if you feel that way.

    • This is of course "clickbait" WTF? It is literally your example but tech based. A "clickbait" title is a sensationalized headline designed to manipulate readers into clicking a link using things like "fear" rather than delivering objective facts. A "clickbait" headline also usually provides little value compared to the hype generated. How does this headline not qualify? It's a generic often reused headline that is overly sensationalized. Oh no! "millions" can't use this app anymore. It has no basic facts like what f*cking app. You read the article and it's the Samsung VPN which no one cares about and there is a million free VPNs. How are you defending this ######? Headlines like this (and among other things) make me read Neowin much less than I used to in the past. It's trash...
