GTA IV for PC (official)

Intel's integrated graphics processors are really bad, their high end might be equivalent to Nvidia's or ATI's low end.

If you're having problems running Bioshock (i.e. you're running it on low) you're going to have lots of problems running GTA4 (if it even will, the Intel cards cut corners to do certain things)

Well, it's a shame if it won't work, but the good news is I just bought two GeForce 9800 512mb GTs for my desktop. From the comments in this thread, it looks like I'll have good results with them. I believe my CPU will be the only bottleneck I'll then have to contend with.

GTA IV is running great on my new rig. I upgraded to an AMD Phenom 9750 from an Athlon X2 3800+ and my game is so smooth. I've used various video card drivers with my 9600GT and I've found the best drivers to use are either the new 181.00 or the 180.87 driver.

I am glad to hear that. I am just getting my Phenom II X4 940 BE tomorrow. I was going to go with Intel q9550 but changed my mind last moment. AMD alternative came much cheaper and apparently same performance after I OC the CPU a bit.

I also have a 9600GT @700MHz Core.

For HD I have the WD 320GB 16MB cache 7200RPM SATA 3Gbps.

So I think I will see a good performance increase going from Opteron 180 oced @ 3GHz

I heard that a quad core makes quite the difference when it comes to GTA IV

Cheers

It should perform well with GTA IV. What CPU do you have? If it's a quad-core, you're good to go.

Yeah I have the latest drivers.

That's odd. What settings are you using? Sometimes, it may "underestimate" the video memory usage in the options menu. Try lowering the settings and see if you still get the error.

A game like GTA IV is CPU-bound so a better CPU means better FPS. Especially if you're upgrading to a quad-core CPU.

Just benchmarked with my new system. Using the preset settings, have tried to tweak it yet:

Alright sometimes when I play GTA4 it crashes and after the crash something comes up and tells me Windows closed the program because it was doing wierd behavior and all that. When I click on more information I get this:

Data Execution Prevention (DEP) is a security feature that can help prevent damage to your computer from viruses and other security threats. Harmful programs can try to attack Windows by attempting to run (also known as execute) code from system memory locations reserved for Windows and other authorized programs. These types of attacks can harm your programs and files.

DEP can help protect your computer by monitoring your programs to make sure that they use system memory safely. If DEP notices a program on your computer using memory incorrectly, it closes the program and notifies you.

So I am asking you, as I am getting tired of this thing Windows has closing GTA4 during a mission always, what should I do?

Ideally I'd wait until Rockstar fix the issue, but the odds of Rockstar fixing anything are quite low.

You should be able to configure Windows to ignore DEP when it comes to the main GTA app though.

Which one do I choose? When I chose to exclude GTA.exe it says it is not allowed. UAC is not on.

I picked up GTA IV (PC) for ?9.99 from Morrisons (in Plymouth, UK) and I'm surprised how well it runs on my system. Some graphic gliches but nothing game stopping. - usually when on a motorbike going very, very fast.

My specs :

Intel Q6600

Geforce 8800GTS 320mb

2gb ddr2

Vista 32bit

Texture are low but that's due to the gfx card but everything else medium to very high.

roadrunna, that's not a bad system... im not surprised you are satisfied with the performance!

Here are my bench mark's:

System memory usage: 81%

Video memory usage: 100%

(with hardware limits)

The game is mostly a CPU game and requires at least a quad core CPU to run. The GPU doesn't matter as much.

Not true. I have a dual core CPU and 2 gig of ram along with a 512 meg GPU and it runs just fine.

Sure i need to set a few settings low, but it looks and runs fine.

Hey guys! I've been having a blast in GTA IV since I upgraded my CPU, so I havent posted much.

So far I've sailed, flew a helicopter and pretty much drove anything off the streets, but can someone tell me if its possible to fly a plane? I went over to the airport but I could not get into any of the planes.....

    • Not even an OLED display on the laptops. Also it seems that the laptop design isn't the same as the Surface Ultra model. Looks like bargain bin at high prices.
    • VirtualBox 7.2.10 by Razvan Serea VirtualBox is a powerful x86 and AMD64/Intel64 virtualization product for enterprise as well as home use. Targeted at server, desktop and embedded use, it is now the only professional-quality virtualization solution that is also Open Source Software. Presently, VirtualBox runs on Windows, Linux, macOS, and Solaris hosts and supports a large number of guest operating systems including but not limited to Windows (NT 4.0, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista, 7, 8, Windows 10 and Windows 11), DOS/Windows 3.x, Linux (2.4, 2.6, 3.x, 4.x, 5.x and 6.x), Solaris and OpenSolaris, OS/2, OpenBSD, NetBSD and FreeBSD. Some of the features of VirtualBox are: Modularity. VirtualBox has an extremely modular design with well-defined internal programming interfaces and a client/server design. This makes it easy to control it from several interfaces at once: for example, you can start a virtual machine in a typical virtual machine GUI and then control that machine from the command line, or possibly remotely. VirtualBox also comes with a full Software Development Kit: even though it is Open Source Software, you don't have to hack the source to write a new interface for VirtualBox. Virtual machine descriptions in XML. The configuration settings of virtual machines are stored entirely in XML and are independent of the local machines. Virtual machine definitions can therefore easily be ported to other computers. • OK, now ask yourself how are they going to enforce that law? By requiring every single adult to prove their age and provide their legal identity documents to an UNREGULATED 3rd party company that already has a long track record of multiple data breaches. Not to mention, parliament have voted AGAINST this ban, twice, and Starmer is going ahead anyway. So, where's the democracy here, because that looks like dictatorship to me. The solution here is parental responsibility, not government control. Run some public service announcements on TV and UK social media teaching parents how to setup parental controls. That's already been proven to actually work. But the, this is not and has NEVER been about keeping kids safe. It's about control and monitoring. Watching what you're doing online and controlling what you can see and what you can say.
    • Interesting read. I knew the adware was quite controversial at the time, however never realised to the point The Guardian wrote an article about Patchou. I just said no and enjoyed his creation, I’d probably be a lot more wary of something like that today though.
