Screen blacking out followed by a BSoD

Recommended Posts

Recently I started getting this problem, it would happen when trying to watch a film with Quicktime or viewing certain pages on Internet Explorer. Like when in hotmail it would happen when I actually open a message, the computer would slow down then the screen would go black then return after a few seconds and I would have to quit IE to prevent the BSoD eventually appearing after one or two more 'blackouts'

Also in Quicktime (I need QT to view movies made on my digital camera and phone) when I would increase the size of the window of the movie it would happen.

The only time I had the screen completely blanking out before this began happening on a regular basis was when I would load up a Sega Genesis emulator but I have never ever got BSoD's until now

Avoided getting the BSOD, but had to put some songs on my ipod so opened up itunes on a reboot and done what I wanted then closed itunes and the desktop refreshed so had to reboot because the BSOD was going to come up (if I use the comp only for web browsing and viewing youtube films it's alright but using programs like itunes, quicktime player etc produces the refreshing then screen blacking out followed by the BSOD)

When I shut it down I get a pop up box opening saying "Ending Task : GUI_Mainframe1238272 " or something similar, then it switched off. Maybe that's a clue to the problem.

Also while searching about it I came across a post on a AMD forum I think, recently somebody else has a problem like mine, but nobody gave him a solution

According to the mini-dump you uploaded, your crashes are caused by nv4_mini.sys, which is part of the nVidia display driver. Try updating to the latest version and see what happens. You should also update your XP install to service pack 3 as well, staying with SP1 isn't wise.
