Does the PS3 really eat up a lot of energy?

Recommended Posts

No, nothing alarming on my electricity bill since I bought the console. And FTR I actually own all 3 consoles, and have a PC constantly running :p

Doubt it eats up any more than a mid-high end PC.

Yes the reports are true, but unless your console is on 24/7, 365 days a year, nothing to worry about, it's not really any different than any other high end multimedia device.

New revisions of the device will continue to use less as the CPU/GPU inside are shrunk.

how about someone at neowin run some quick tests w/ their killawatt meter?

measure in Standby, idle and while playing a game.

i heard that it still uses like 30W in Standby. true or false?

edit: ok, nevermind... this review shows 1.9W in Standby

but what a hog when idle/playback/gaming :|

No idea

Think the old PS3 (90nm/90nm) is rated at 200W, first revision (65nm/90nm) 135W and the newest one which I believe is (65nm/65nm) I don't have a figure for.

( Source: http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/30/40gb-ps...er-consumption/ )

Those won't be standby figures, just what it's rated at.

just for casual fun times . i dont think i will worry about PS3, i sure did worry when get Sony bravia plasmas got 26" seeing the viewing area will be small and will result is decent power usage, its almost ON for 10-14 hours daily in total usage by all members in my home, PS3 is just used by me and my sis once in a while for some hours and that too not everyday but now and then :)

New revisions of the device will continue to use less as the CPU/GPU inside are shrunk.

But you'll have to buy the new revised device(s) in order to take advantage of the lesser power consumption.

Microsoft Xbox 360 ranks a close second. If you shut it down when you're not playing a game or watching a movie, it costs about $11 to operate annually. Leaving it on continuously will cost you $103.

Yey, a reason to choose the 360 over the PS3! :D

$12 a yr?

Terrible!

That's almost the cost of...2 sandwiches!

But you'll have to buy the new revised device(s) in order to take advantage of the lesser power consumption.

Yup $12 a year, definitely worth basing your console purchase(s) on that

Good point, lol. But it's interesting to see that the Wii uses A LOT LESS power than the 360 and PS3.

Pretty simple, last generation hardware, last generation power usage.

Not interesting or surprising in the least!

yes. BIG plasmas LCD can simply EAT lots of power . they look slick and slim but they are monsters.

infact australia is thinking of banning them outright.

This is the reason i took very late decision to get Sony Bravia and i knew they optimize consumption on updated/revised versions . same about PS3 40 gb i knew by removing PS2 hardware and more updated power hardware they have now brought down consumption and 26 inch was wise choice , i got another reason to get bean bag and move it around when playing :) .

    • The FIFA World Cup is not US centric.
    • It’s amusing how Microsoft is pushing IT admins as if this was a major, game-changing update. In reality, it’s just an enablement package that bumps the build number, which is disappointing compared to the more substantial 22H2 and 24H2 releases. Technically, 25H2, 26H1, and the upcoming 26H2 are essentially the same, differing only in support schedules. They could have included the Windows K2 improvements here, but chose not to. The era of Windows being in the backburner continues, and this 26H2 release feels like an afterthought. Shame, Nadella, shame.
    • Microsoft, totally not confusing /s 25H2 - Current for non-Arm based Windows 26H1 - Current for Arm based Windows 26H2 - Only for non Arm Windows
    • After I installed those, my older but capable Win 11 laptop (16GB RAM) reported it as 26H2 26300.8697. Then I installed it on my big laptop (128GB RAM! Hehe sorry), it reported it as 25H2 26220.8690. Ugh. Do I have to switch Insiders channels from Release to Beta?
