afusion
"Today during a press briefing at AMD's offices in Austin, TX the company showed off some upcoming technology that should be available sometime early in 2009. What was most impressive was the overclocked speeds of the pending Phenom II X4 45nm processors. On air cooling AMD showed the quad-core CPU running at nearly 4.0 GHz while with much more extreme liquid nitrogen cooling help the same CPU reached over 6.0 GHz! It looks like AMD's newest processor might finally once again compete with the best from Intel, including its recent Core i7 CPUs." If you thought 5 was fast try 6! Personally I find it financially insane [referring to Core i7) to buy new architecture, memory, and mobo that costs allot when the end result doesn't show that much of a major incremental improvement to it's predecessor (Core 2) Source: Slashdot Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/700100-amd-shows-upcoming-phenom-ii-cpu-at-60-ghz/ Share on other sites
ToneKnee
Like all new architects, it takes awhile before the real benefits start to show. Prices are always high to begin with granted but most people wont buy these immedately. I'm still using a Prescott P4 and I find AMD's chipset to be most beneficial from a financial perspective. Skulltrail-old
The Nehalem architecture looks very good, and kudos to Intel for bringing back HT. Great innovation. I did hear however that the Nehalem architecture was based off something brought up by AMD, anyone know if this is a myth or fact? TruckWEB
It all boils down to price.... Depending on what AMD will be asking for the Phenom II. The new Intel Core i7 is expensive, but not that much if you go with the 920 and it still offer better performance then the current AMD Phenom. And as for performance, even if the Phenom II is 30-40% better than the original, will it be able to compete with the best Core i7 ?? Even Intel Core2 are able to speed past the Phenom.... redvamp128
The main drawback other than price will be for example a badly written application that cannot use these new features- I mean some applications even though you may have a dual or quad and tri core cpu may only be using one. Though with that extreme cooling it does perk some interest from me. And still remembering how fast a 10mhz was compared to an 8mhz Ibm. I don't think AMD cares much about i7, they want to crush the Core2 and make their dominance from there and then take on i7 with "Bulldozer" That's to my prediction on how they want to play this out. Maybe, but AMD is late, a generation late. By the time Bulldozer will be here, Intel will have done a refresh of it i7. But even if it's just a refresh, chances are, it will be faster... Who knows?
