I hate Touchpads!

Recommended Posts

I hate them too, I can barely use a notebook without a mouse :p

When I used to work at Future Shop I'd sell laptops to people and I couldn't believe the amount of people who would be like, "Oh it's ok, I can use a touchpad just as fast as a mouse."

I was like. WTF??

You aren't the only one mate. This is why my soul belongs to ThinkPads.

Once you try a TrackPoint -- not to be confused with Dell, Sony, or any other company's cheap pointing stick offerings -- you never go back.

God, i hate that thing. I wish I could disable it on my Dell :(

OP What do the round buttons above the Keyboard do ? Do any of them disable the touchpad my Asus has a button (Separate from the keyboard) that disables the touch, I found out the hard way one time to get that button to work that switches on or off the touch it also needs a driver installed.

  • 2 weeks later...

I had an issue with my touchpad and Webroot 5.x software. After removing webroot this resulted in no mouse or Keyboard in Windows. Last known config got me back going but I needed to reinstall the mouse driver/software. It is a long story but it resutled in me uninstalling the mouse software and my touchpad was using the Generic Mouse Driver.

So I uninstalled the mouse software via add/remove programs. I downloaded the Mouse Driver software via sony's website. I tried to install it, using "administrator mode". The installer would start, tell me what version of driver I am installing then would stop basically telling me that this wasn't the right machine. This was due to having Vista Home premium with Service Pak1. I guess the service pak fooled the software in thinking it wasn't the right one.

So I actually called sony support went through all the gyrations with them, they didn't have a way to make the downloaded file work or nor had another file for systems with SP1

At that point, he led me into "Help and Support" on my laptop. In here there were some options I wasn't aware of. Sony does some customizations that actually was impressive compared to other system restore procedures I was used to with HP. Dell etc. Maybe they do this now, I am not sure.

Under Help and support, you can go to "Backup and Recovery" Under here you want to go into Launch VAIO Recovery Center. From here you can go into "Reinstall Programs or Drivers" and click 'Start', at that point you are asked if you want to do a few things first, you can Skip that. From here you are given a menu with 2 tabs at the top, Programs or Drivers. Select Drivers and find your mouse driver, select it and proceed from there. It basically does takes care of the rest from that point as I recall. Once you are finished you reboot and at that point my mouse hasn't missed a beat, plus I had the extended options of my touch pad like scrolling with was a real PIA not to have...

Any rate, this helped me and I figured I would pass it on, maybe this will help you. If you do have a working external mouse you should be safe to uninstall and reinstall the mouse software. If you aren't sure, just do the reinstall and see if that helps.

I love my Vaio but I really wish it had one of the better Synaptics touchpads instead of this ALPS junk.

Also wish they'd used a better bluetooth adapter than the Broadcom/ALPS one which apparently doesn't support USB selective suspend properly and wastes battery power. Or maybe that's just an issue with their 64-bit driver. Either way, annoying.

    • Population especially in high density areas creates more heat and more humidity. This can be noticed in an indoor arena or concert room which heats up when the room or arena fills with people, without air conditoning to cool it down, Watering of lawns creates more humidity as the moisture from the watering rises into the atmosphere, creating a more humid condition. The again, depopulating an arena or room after an event will drop the temperature inside. Desert areas are less humid for a number of reasons, including a lower population density. Tel Aviv has horrible weather, unless you like it hot and humid. Summer days are regularly 90+ F with humidity well over 70%. It is probably not as bad as Mississippi but still it is bad enough.

    • I hear you on browser password manager, in my case I have two Google profiles, one was created when Google decided to grandfather us out of Workspace for Domains (with the replacement being too expensive for 25 users) resulting in my domain email address no longer being able to be registered to a new Workspace I created (for myself and another co-owner) so I could use Takeout and sync over some stuff to the new Workspace. Then I have my personal Google profile which I could be logged into on my desktop or Mobile, so I am saving passwords on one or the other, and when an URL changes another password for the same service gets added, it basically ends up being a giant mess. Unless I missed something is there a local decent password manager that can override the browser password managers for Chrome, Edge, Firefox (profiles) so that there is only one vault, and does that also support Passkeys (which to me are still confusing because sometimes it will ask for a Passkey on a phone I am no longer using!) Microsofts implementation of Passkeys is the worst!
    • It's utterly baffling that we have no idea when we'll get new features even well after they've been released. Why Microsoft thinks this is a good rollout strategy is beyond me.
    • If it makes anybody happy, others will need to be bitter about it. (apologies to Yogi Berra)
