Kaspersky IMO is the best internet security software. But since you only want a firewall, you could always stick to Comodo Firewall. It seems to be popular here on NW. (Link)

Most firewalls today are included in 4-in-1 software "internet security" suites; firewall, anti virus, anti-malware, content filter (including spam). It will be hard to find a good solo-firewall.

lightest option is a hardware firewall... if yo uare gonna spend $40 a year on a software firewall then just buy a router and it will be lighter than any software you can install.. if not you always have your standard vista firewall which does a pretty good job in my opinion.

Good in theory BUT your SoHo router wont:

Give you protection against hostile programs making outbound calls via HTTP/Email for example or wont even notify you of this.

Bear in mind, a hardware firewall won't protect you from attacks coming from within your own network. I don't trust any of my mates or any visitors to be squeaky clean.

Always keep a software firewall on. Windows' own firewall should be more than enough for most users.
