Enable Background Downloads. - Woah. Cool.

Recommended Posts

I just discovered theres a new feature in the settings of Xbox Live and your Xbox settings.

"Enable Background Downloads"

If you enable it .. it allows you to download things over-night with your console OFF.

Your console lights blink while it downloads, and when its done pulling in things, it shuts the Xbox off..

That way you can play them in the morning.

I'm downloading End War right now with my console off.. and it works just fine.

Was on old Dashboard, I am finding it kind of funny how people keep thinking some of these features are new but were in the older dashboard since forever. The use of own pictures for themes was another one people thought was new!

But yes, this is a cool feature, handy if you want to download something over night and it turns off when done.

The reason the console's fans still spin while it's "off" is because it's actually completely on. Sadly, in order for USB power (for charging the controller) and for downloads, the entire console needs power. It's the same on most PC's, the USB ports don't have power unless the computer is at least on standby.

It's one of the reasons I support the UK's "silly" energy policies, whereby devices with a "standby" mode now have to draw significantly less power than when they're "on", because hopefully it means manufacturers will actually design them better.

oh I thought this was something that when you download something in the background while playing a game.. :|

Nope.

I tested it the other night.

I picked Tom Clancy's End War (which seems to be pretty cool with the voice technology. I'm going to have to rent it), and hit the power button on my 360.

The 360's light still occasionally blinked, but when I woke up next morning it was off, and Tom Clancy's End War was downloaded.

Offline Backend downloading gets a mighty mighty big thumbs up from me for those 1+ gig demo's / etc.

    • +1 on XVI. I still use it.

    • I remember when all games had demos; it was a normal thing, not a limited time promotion.
