Dell 248WFP Monitor Hissing/Whistling

Recommended Posts

I noticed the monitor started to hiss/whistle out of the blue.. I did lay it face 1st; days b4 and also was hooked up VGA to old HP desktop, it happens when I had temp. internet files open... doesnt happen on any other window. happens on diff windows users. It is a 24in. Dell 248WFP hooked up by DVI. I dont notice any dead pixels, dents, scratches, blurs. I have it hooked up to the computer in my signature at 1920X1200 refresh 60Hz. nvidia drivers 178.24.

HELP!

Just out of curiosity, what revision do you have?

Easy way to check is to see how your Sharpness Setting increments -- increments by 25 = A00; increments by 10 = A01 (newer).

I'm going to upgrade to Dell A01 since it seems to alleviate some of the problems, though I don't have any real complaints with my current one.

I just wish Dell would let me flash my own monitor with the upgrade instead of having to send it in and exchange.

Edit: I should also mention that this buzzing is barely audible, but at times like this when everyone's sleeping I can definitely pick it up. Can't say my monitor knows how to whistle yet. I'm thankful for that. I've had the monitor for 3 months and bought it as a bundle for $350 from Dell.

could only find a02e

Called Dell XPS Tech Support, we did sys restores and no go. uninstalled drivers, used dell drivers and nvidia drivers and no go. safe mode there is no hiss/whistle. tried monitor on diff computer no sound. so they advd me that it is something I have installed. advd to backup and format/reinstall windows. they are calling back on thursday

The found in your monitor is probably having to spin faster because you have lowered your brightness as most people do. This can occur in certain monitors or if they are faulty. One fix for this I have seen around is to set your monitor to 100 brightness and then in windows set it lower (note this isn't a good idea if you need color accuracy is crucial to you).

This is very odd, though if its fine in safe mode, its possible that its the video card or something to do with it. The problem is that if its not the card but something to do with the drivers (which safe mode obviously does not run), then the same (replacement) card with the same drivers might give you the same problem :s. Hopefully its a hardware issue so this gets sorted for you.

I don't think it is a hardware issue. Safe mode uses a limited number of colors/resolution, which might affect the sound that is being heard from the monitor. Also, I am going to assume, that you didn't plug the monitor into the computers for an extended amount of time (and actually used the machine with that monitor). Because of that you may not have picked up on the said noise.
