DAMN YOU AND YOU'RE WORKING SYSTEMS!

When you getting the system back?

when its going to be ready to download?

SCEE said late afternoon/night time.

Probably around 5PM GMT is my guess.

Wednesday 17th

Wii is sooo boring right now!

Damn!

I guess at least it's before Christmas!

Stick the Homebrew channel on your Wii, then explore the "homebrew" scene :p

No console has attempted something like this before yet it's 2005 tech?! When Home started production in 2005, it wasn't even 3D, it was a 2D interface for the PS2.

Just an attempt to downplay the launch, dirty MS, dirty!!

Bit harsh really, they should all be supporting each other in trying different methods, as opposed to all copying each other 1:1. Breath of fresh air to have some variety between the consoles!

Not the most elegant PR bash seen before

I have to agree with him, Home does feel like tech from 2005. Essentially at its core it's just another clone of Second Life (which was launched 2003/4?), so its already old in that sense. Then they showed off Home for the first time in early 2007 so we've been waiting on it publicy for almost 2 years, and of course we know its been in production since 2005 at least. It's not hard to see why he thinks it's old tech.

Anyways, it remains to be seen if Home will be a success or not at the end of the day. Gamers will decide if it feels old or not and worth all the waiting.

So does that mean NXE, which is a 2D interface is REALLY old tech seeing as MS used 2D with the Xbox? I wouldn't say so, much of the interface wouldn't of been able to be done on the Xbox, even although it is 2D.

It's just PR to downplay the hype/launch of Home, why else would they come out with this the day it launches? :p

It's old on the basis it's been in development for a long time, but no way is it tech we'd of seen in 2005 (on consoles). The PS3 wasn't even out then, and the 360 just, coming right at the end of 2005.

Not to mention if you pit it up graphically, nothing released in 2005 on the basis of social interaction, or massive world online services look anywhere near as good as Home.

It was a PR stunt to grab attention, clearly doing the trick as all the gaming sites report it and start massive flame wars between the PS3 and 360

I don't know about that tbh, when you think about any online game you are already playing as an avatar. Games could probably pull off quite a lot of the same things back then, which Home is doing now quite easily. It's just another MMO, it's not that technical when you break it down. Where they've exceeded everything before now is the integration with the console and PSN to create parties and experience games/movies/photos with your friends.

That part isn't old tech and something we've not seen before. Although there is comparable services obviously.

I'm not getting into a big arguement about this though. I've put down my reasons why I've agreed with him and thats that :p

My brain is too frazzled after the week I've had :p

# Technical updates are progressing and as you have probably seen the 1.03 patch is available for existing users already but the service remains unavailable whilst work is carried out

# Service should be back up everywhere early PM UK time although theres no specific time as theres a long list of actions being worked through in Europe, America, Asia and Japan

# New comers to the service will find the Home icon on their XMB once we activate it. You wont have to look for it, it will be easy to spot and will appear under PlayStation?Network. However, if you are online on your PS3 when we activate it you will need to restart your PS3 for it to appear. Watch these forums for news on when that is. It will work like Folding@Home in that the icon will be there and you'll download the service when you first select it.

However Sony are probably using Valve time and "Early PM", probably means 5-7pm:pp

Having the Home icon appear itself on every PS3 is a smart move to get people checking it out. As if it were just in the store you'd need to look it out yourself, and of course be visiting the store.

I'm sure that news ticker will promote it as well, but who the hell keeps that activated?:

I think Microsoft's argument proves its nothing more than a cheap dig at Sony as you could argue that pretty much any technology is old. It's just Microsoft's PR department trying to score some points and put a dampener on the release of Home. They'd be touting it as the best thing since sliced bread if it was there own.

Ultimately all the major console manufacturers are playing keeping up with the Jones's. Perhaps their PR departments should be talking up their own products instead of down the competitors.

I wish they'd remove the stupid start up "press x to connect" etc.

It's not like there is any other options for me to choose, so just boot into Home right away!

Probably will be setup like that eventually.

Unless they maybe aim to add an "offline" mode to the startup screen where you can customize your character/apartment without having to be online?

Who knows...

Honestly. Don't even get started on PR in the Sony section.

You're not gonna get anywhere :p

Yeah they ain't great either, but I don't remember Sony bashing NXE the day it launched heh.

Who cares anyway, its a dick comment but dwelling on it will only turn NW into N4G for the day.

They're all as bad as each other, I think that's pretty much a universal consensus.

It's a bit lame of Microsoft to bash Home on it's launch day though, why not send them a cake instead like the IE team did to Mozilla? :p

Well I was thinking that myself, but I don't recall them ever talking about features like that.

They need to minimize loading times though, it takes just a bit too long to get into any of the zones.

Yes & Yes.

Well by yes to your first comment I just mean something like the above can be added, anything can be added really.

And yes to your second I'd like to see load times improved, but that's obviously going to be an ongoing tweaking process from day 1 - Improving technicalities like loading, maybe even graphics and reducing things like lag/etc.

Things like that I can kind of forgive/expect early on, but I demand a good constant stream of content right out the door.

By the way TIME, who'd you'd usually expect to be good with checking their facts dropped a pretty bad one

Starting today, owners of the pricey PlayStation 3 — there are nearly 17 million of them worldwide, a scant 200,000 of whom live in the U.S. — can download the software for free via Sony's PlayStation Network, which connects the game consoles on the Net so users can play each other.

http://www.time.com/time/business/article/...1865789,00.html

According to them only 200,000 people in the US own a PS3, 16,800,000 people in the EU/Japan

IF you load Second life, this looks a hell of a lot better than that, Second Life sucked donkey balls.

That's great, but we're not talking about gfx comparison, and I don't recall anyone saying SL looked better? I said Home was a clone of SL essentially.

Certainly a lot of people think Home sucks donkey balls too.

    • It depends, but it's also going to push more adoption of open source AI models that can run locally, I'm seeing a pattern among the US and China when it comes to closed and open source AI models, they close when they feel they have the advantage, open up when they feel they don't. This has little to do with security and everything to do with control, the irony is that the ones that do go open and get the community behind them are the ones that have the real control, hence why we keep seeing this seesaw from closed to open. Ultimately, it's far too dangerous to let any one country or corporation to control AI, which is why open source AI or AI you can run locally on your hardware is very likely going to be the future of AI over the long run, this is especially the case as AI becomes more powerful and useful for user, privacy, security and censorship will become more of an issue for users and businesses.
    • A person should only be required to click through to an article if they want to know more details. The headline should give basic facts. A basic fact would include the name of the service being shut down.
    • That would probably be a good outcome, but it would also require other "features" be changed to comply, such as Auto play, scrolling, and advertising. Having the laws shift these platforms back to a socially responsible and useful places is a benefit for everyone. The addictive nature is the problem, and while many blame the individual, psychologists would suggest the platform is using a well trodden playbook to hook in more revenue..
    • It is in fact being discontinued in the US in July.
    • It was a rather nice rant as I rather dislike when people support the shitifcation of the Internet. My comment also factually applied the definition of "clickbait' to this headline unlike your comment. I have been reading this site for some 20 years now so I will call them out when they are doing carp they shouldn't be doing but thanks for your concern. You can't even do a search by headline anymore to do a quick search to find something because most of the titles lack all the relevant keywords that should be there.
