Hey guys has anyone watched Planetes?

Just finished it and if you like sci-fi, I suggest you watch it. I thought it did a great job in making it feel how in space you could feel so lost and alone. I won't give any away, but I encourage you guys to watch it.

I decided to read Eyeshield 21 since it's Superbowl Weekend and had a similar plot with Over Drive. I'll sum up the 37 volumes with a few fragmented statements.

Main team has Crash bandicoot as its logo. Girls cry. Guys are built like Hercules, protagonist is meek, girls are deliciously curvy/cute and supposedly "intelligent" yet constantly on the verge of tears. Protagonist always wins regardless of the impossible odds, antagonists are depicted as egoistic playboys with the signature "evil" smile and look like they're in the 20's, One player looked like he got out of prison for multiple homicides. Most of the "enemies" all are either delinquents, models or both. Home team is always depicted as grade school students in comparison. Protagonist has potential to be Japan's greatest player even though he only learned how to run by running errands for bullies.

Oh, and there's football. I completely forgot about that because the manga is essentially Dragonball, Yu-Gi--Oh!, Ouran High School Host Club, Bleach and Naruto mixed together. There's no originality in this manga and is simply another shounen manga for teenagers. The mangaka even creates names for "special moves" that each player would do to flip the game over for his team.

6/10 for being another typical shounen manga even though it was a bit exciting at times but I was constantly reminded of the stupidity of the characters when the "honor student" female would cry at every display of strength by one of her male friends. LAME! So much potential and I was enthralled by the first few volumes then completely let down.

Note: The mangaka has a thing against Americans. An American coach leads a team called the NASA Apollos and refers to all the Japanese as "yellow monkeys" and constantly mocks the physique of Asians, especially Japanese. >_>

Check out Infinite Ryvius if you enjoyed the anime. It's significantly darker and more "politics" between teenagers in space. I greatly disliked the Planetes anime series since it greatly deviated from the masterpiece manga and turned the whole manga into some silly terrorist plot. The manga is one of the best, realistic sci-fi stories I've ever read.

Edit: Realized that Neowin now features some recommendation post feature. If you think my review or my recommendations are helpful, feel free to abuse the green button. However, if the search function doesn't allow you to search by most recommended posts, then forget it.

Actually, change that. 7/10. It deserves it because the football games were well depicted if you remove all the power up moves. Plus, I love sports manga that aren't emo brats like Suzuka or Dash!. This is a must read for all sports anime fans out there. It can give Air Gear a run for its money.

@Matrix

How does your rating system have decimal points?!

I get a feeling you'd enjoy playing something like Homeworld or atleast get a kick out of reading the Historic and technical background that comes with it.

I don't think I would enjoy the game since it's RTS. It reminds me of Sins of a Solar Empire but more in depth. Planetes (manga) made me feel like I could relate to the main character in almost every way possible. From the clumsiness to rising up and meeting challenges that one did not possibly attain until he tried his very best, the manga is a complete package. I felt like I read 50 volumes even though it's only 4 volumes long. The manga is close to perfection in terms of treating the reader as an intelligent, mature reader who expected to relax and lose himself in the manga without worrying about being knocked out of his suspension of disbelief.

The anime, on the other hand, was sporadic, disconnected and exaggerated selling points such as romantic relationships, huge explosions and terrorist/conspiracy plots. It even went as far as to pandering for the viewer's sympathy in the final episode. >_>

any reason you dislike RTS i mean i would have assumed that LoGH fans would be RTS nuts?

I used to enjoy playing RTS when I was a kid. Red Alert 2, Age of Empires, you name it. I also played chess a lot and spent hours developing strategies, which is different from what I do now. RTS games are simply a form of chess, in which you have to learn when to counter attack, move your pieces and develop a strategy to win. I do not play games for that reason anymore. I now simply favor video games that give me a form of escapism, such as Mass Effect, The Witcher, Jade Empire, The Saboteur and KOTOR. Action RPG's are my favorite with first person shooters (that have good stories) coming in a distant second.\

Fun note: I love Mass Effect and always wonder/fantasize of how they made Medi-Gel, the health replenisher, and was amazed by how much biomedical and electrical engineering play in the background of the game. Engineers are actually respected unlike actors and other celebrities today.

Yet another boring episode of Naruto Shippuden (courtesy of its filler arc). On the other hand manga chapter was interesting. Things are starting to heat up in the manga (although we haven't seen the main character in action for quite a while now :p )

Has anyone watched Nabari No Ou?

Interesting: ANN Exclusive Review: Gundam UC Vol. 01 - Me wantz!! :D

@Radish™: If you still want to get into the Gundam franchise, then I'd wait till this gets subbed. It's a great story to get you into the Gundam Universe imo.

Cool, I'll keep an eye out for it :)

I dislike everything Gundam except the one's in the 80's and a few 90's. Gundam SEED, 00, Code Geass and TTGL have no sophistication or class. It's just a group of teenagers being emo while flying mecha to sort out their emotional problems.

Cowboy Bebop manga is quite, quite awful. It's nothing like the anime.

im starting to find most of the jabs about Gundam fanatics less and less funny now.

DO WANT VERY MUCH!

@Masked Forever: You might like Gundam Unicorn since it's from a classic manga. It also sports the classic anime style mixed with new anime technologies.

Since it's a six episode OVA, I'll definitely check it out. Nothing made me more miserable than watching the first third of SEED, then realizing it's basically an MTV show (teenage drama) wrapped up in mecha and pseudo politics. TT_TT

    • Alpine Linux 3.24 released with support for COSMIC Desktop and other improvements by David Uzondu Alpine Linux 3.24 has been released with updated system packages, including Linux kernel 6.18 and Rust 1.96. The team also added IPv6 support to the system installer, and they introduced automatic serial console configuration for headless setups. System76's COSMIC desktop environment is now available in the community repo. System76 originally started building this DE because its developers found GNOME to be pretty limited. Plus, it did not help that with virtually every GNOME update, the changes broke System76's custom desktop extensions. As for system packages, the Alpine team moved GTK+ 3.0 from the main repository to the community repository due to its legacy status. py3-setuptools has been upgraded to version 82.0.0, while the old pkg_resources module has been completely dropped. The team also removed outdated packages that still relied on py3-six and GTK+ 2.0. In addition to that, libsoup 2 has been removed because the library was affected by multiple security vulnerabilities. If you're a GRUB user, the Alpine Team said that you must manually run the grub-install command with your specific device or EFI options right after upgrading your system, otherwise, your computer may fail to boot properly with the newly updated GRUB 2.14 bootloader. New installations of Alpine Linux now offer an optional path to a /usr-merged directory layout if you set the BOOTSTRAP_USR_MERGED environment variable to 1 before you execute the setup-disk command. If you already run an older installation, you can migrate manually by installing the merge-usr package and executing its binary as the root user. The team recommends this layout to align Alpine with modern Linux standards, though you should verify your custom scripts before making the switch. Alpine Linux is a pretty tiny (~5MB) Linux distro built around musl libc, BusyBox, and OpenRC. It's been around since 2005, comes with its own package manager called Alpine Package Keeper (APK), and is widely used in modern cloud computing and software deployment.
