From a very surprising yet highly reliable source, we?ve got the most likely and realistic Gran Turismo 5 release date! Sony?s chief executive in southern Europe, James Armstrong, revealed in a statement to Spanish newspaper El Financiero that we can expect the game to arrive (in Europe, at least) Christmas 2009. Here?s the full translated quote:

For next year, the chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment for southern Europe said that they are developing a new game thriller, in which the player may be designing their own hisand the new version of Gran Turismo, which will arrive at Christmasas.

This would provide for a late summer release in Japan, and late fall/early winter releases in the United States and Europe. From a sales perspective, it would also provide the PlayStation franchise with a major blockbuster release heading into next year?s Christmas season. What do you think? By then we'll be approaching the next gen of consoles. May as well just leave it for the PS4 if that's the case.

Um, what? Daft logic.

It will only be the PS3's 3rd year on the market :/

Suppose there was no point in releasing God of War 2 MONTHS before the PS3 hit, as opposed to GT5 hitting years before the PS4?

Might be a year away, but it's not the 2010 everyone keeps going on about. We'll see it hit Japan even earlier.

Was going to say - think the PS3 has got a bit more life in it yet!

That might be when I consider picking up a PS3 as I've got a bit of a soft spot for the Gran Turismo series! :)

Unfortunately for the PS 3, that gives the 360 that long as king of the hill on semi relistic Touring car racers, such as PGR and Forza, I use PGR because I honestly see GT And PGR more as the same class of games, designed around a solid sim engine, then dumbed slightly down to be easier and more fun for the casual racer.

Though with Damage simulation GT5 should be somethign inebtween the hardcore Froza and the Casual fun PGR and GT5P.

But for a console that was once alone at the top of Touring car racers, Xma09 seems liek too little too late. If MS has been fworking on a Forza3 without teling us, it may very well be out by that time as well, though I think MS feels one forza per generaton is good enough. Now gimme more ars and tracks :p

At least it's finally god a street date though.

That's great, but a lot of people like GT and it has a massive following. It's the most popular racing simulator.

GT3 has sold 14.89million copies.

As of April 30, 2008, the game has shipped 1.89 million copies in Japan, 7.14 million in North America, 5.85 million in Europe, and 10,000 in Southeast Asia for a total of 14.89 million copies.

GT4

By April 30, 2008, Gran Turismo 4 had shipped 1.24 million copies in Japan, 2.9 million in North America, 5.77 million in Europe, and 150,000 in Asia for a total of 10.06 million copies. As of June 2008, Gran Turismo 4 has shipped 1.25 million copies in Japan, 2.93 million in North America, 5.85 million in Europe, 70,000 in Southeast Asia, and 80,000 in Korea.

The game has a lot of followers waiting on it.

It's hardly too late being released in the PS3s third year in America, second year in Europe.

Especially with everyone going on about how long this generation should last, we're now deeming 2/3 years "too late", ditch it and start for PS4? What the hell? That's just funny

You just don't see we started counting when the first Next-gen console was released, not when Latestation 3 was released.

And by that measure, it's very late. And yes, it will probably sell very well - We still have our opinions.

The 360's release date has no tangent on the PS3s lifecycle.

If it runs 10 year, it runs 10 years, not "9" years because the 360 came out a year earlier.

If I buy a PS3 today, I don't say it's 3 years old because the 360 is, it's 2 years old.

Your argument is poor, 2/3 years into a consoles life cycle is not long at all, end of. It never has been. Many of the great PS2 games hit 4/5/6 years into the consoles life cycle. Heck God of War 2 came out when the 360 was already released, 6 years after the PS2 was launched. Same with FF12.

The mere idea that because GT5 hits Christmas 2009 it should be canned and put on the PS4 is absolutely laughable.

That's great, but a lot of people like GT and it has a massive following. It's the most popular racing simulator.

I know it has a huge following, I'm not so sure it's the biggest anymore. as of today, I think it may be more a result of the large amount of PS3 out there. and for those waiting for it, itll be great, but on the other hand, with Forza, you an't deny a lot of peope have jumped ship especially those that are more itnrested in realism that it being GT

it may only be the PS3's third year, but that still puts it what... 4+ years behind PGR, and 3+ years behind Forza 2 on the 360.

The Forza and PGR racing communities are full of people that have swiched from GT, while more of the PGR peopel may go back to at leats test GT5, those that jumped to Froza is probably lost forever since most of these are peope who jumped because they wanted realism, not just pretty graphics and GT racing. and I don't see GT5 competing with Forza on the realism yet, and if it did, that'd prbbaly cost them too muh of their main user base wih are more of the casual sim racer, not the hardcore.

Still yeah, of course GT5 will sell well. But you can't say it's not late. if thy had GT5 as a launch title, that would have plugged a signigifant customer leak to the 360 among the casual sim racers.

Playstation and GT use to be synonimous with console GT Sim racing. Now not only is it no longer the best sim, but the PS3 doesn't even have GT, and won't have it before 3 years into it's life. From being THE GT game and console, that's a significant fall.

And yet again, only AB's opinion is the right opinion, everything else is laughable.

You may only see it as fine because the Playstation 3 was released 2 years ago in Europe, the thing is still 3 years old! Plus when I look at the age of consoles, I look at the entire generation, like a lot of other people do. Consoles are released to serve the current generation and that starts when the first company fires the gun, from there the clock starts ticking. Also, I personally don't find the previous generation of consoles a very valid argument for this generation because everything is different. There are 3 great consoles on the market in a pretty fierce competition and now PS3 is the underdog at this point. So you think because the most popular console of the last generation did fine with 6+ year titles, the PS3 can rest on laurels and everything will be smooth sailing?

My opinion is, I think the game is very late in this generation of games and by this generations measures. Stop trying to correct people by thinking your opinion is superior. And no, nowhere did I say the game would flop or do badly.

Um I just showed you how many copies GT3/GT4 sold.

Has any other racing simulator sold that many? Don't think so.

As for everything else you're obviously a Forza man HawkMan, which is fine but I dunno if you even play GT, because it's in no way a sim racer, and it's up there at the top in terms of realism. Only lacking damage in the past, however that's remedied for GT5, and clearly had little impact on perception for GT3/GT4 with the amount of copies they both sold.

Have I missed something?

It still is.

GT5 is being released on it you know, that's what we're discussing.

Now not only is it no longer the best sim

Oh, lastly, can I borrow that crystal ball? I've not had a chance to play GT5 yet :p

And yet again, only AB's opinion is the right opinion, everything else is laughable.

If you can post your opinion I can challenge it! Don't like that idea, don't post your opinion or ignore my comments.

And the only thing I said is laughable is the notion of GT5 being canned and released on the PS4 as it's coming in 2009, that IS laughable Sethos.

The PS2 was also last to market against it's competitors, and previous generations are valid in showing how popular a brand of game is. There are a lot of GT fans and it's popular, simple! I gave statistics to show how well GT has been selling.

Rather silly to can GT5 and put it on the PS4 when the past games sold as well as they have. Not to mention being an absolutely mind bogglingly stupid move for the fans.

It's later to market than previous GT titles, but all this doom and gloom hulla bula is sad. We had this year 1 of PS3, said it was going to bomb out, we got it at the start of year 2, etc. It's stupid, everyone knows fine well all 3 consoles will do well, and all 3 deserve to see top games throughout their life cycles for however long they last.

If the Xbox 3 comes out 5 years into my PS3's life cycle, how on earth does that mean I automatically can't still enjoy playing on my PS3, and that no further games should be worked on? Heck I still play my PS2. Keep the good games rolling for as long as possible please (Y)

I've not had a chance to play GT5 yet :p

It's called Prologue and is pretty much a cut-down version of GT5, you should try it.

And no, you don't challenge opinions, you just force your own opinions on others and say theirs are laughable.

EDIT: Yes, did you see the laughing face, meaning it was a JOKE! Open eyes much?

Um I just showed you how many copies GT3/GT4 sold.

Has any other racing simulator sold that many? Don't think so.

Do I allways have to have to fight to try to get a on topic response form you in our topics :p

Anyway, yeah, I never argued that GT WAS the biggest, but how many copies GT3 and 4 sold doesn't really have any relevance on THIS generation.

GT3 and GT4 was last gen GT, This Gen the PS3 isn't even in the game yet. Looking at thisGen GT games, the hardcore sim Forza is undeniably the winner, and GT5 won't change that as it's not even in that category really. outide of that, I'll bet that PGR is on top in the more casual GT sim catgeory. since there isn't really anything else out there for it to compete with, there's TDU but... that's and all the others are way down the casual ladder from PGR and GT.

and of course GT3 and 4 sold that many, the PS2 has sold an insane amount of units so far, and along with a shooter, a platformer and and RPG, a decent good looking racer is mandatory for any console owner. but again, that was last generation.

and dammit, now I made another huge wall of text post...

The PS2 was also last to market against it's competitors, and previous generations are valid in showing how popular a brand of game is. There are a lot of GT fans and it's popular, simple! I gave statistics to show how well GT has been selling.

Uh, XBox was last to market.

I have tried Prologue, it's pretty decent.

However Prologue will not equal GT5.

Look at the scores Prologue versions of past games get on Metacritic, as opposed to their final counterparts.

I said one thing was laughable, not your whole opinion Sethos, please read.

Uh, XBox was last to market.

Last againt some of it's competitors, it wasn't first anyway, something which people in here are going on about as if being first is the end all and be all.

but how many copies GT3 and 4 sold doesn't really have any relevance on THIS generation.

That's like saying the Halo 1/2 fanbase built up on the Xbox, had no relevance to those buying Halo 3 on the 360...

Looking at thisGen GT games, the hardcore sim Forza is undeniably the winner, and GT5 won't change that as it's not even in that category really.

Forza is the current winner by default as GT5 isn't even out, and what category is GT5 not in?

I certainly hope you don't mean racing simulation...

Some game selling stats

You just posted that the sales for the game as the series progress is actually on a decline which isn't really a good sign.

I have no idea why PD are taking their time with games. GT PSP was announced in 2004 and not a word about it except that it's still on it's way. Not setting deadlines to Developers is just going to cause problems and delays. Yeah, it may give them more time to fine tune the game but making people wait is going to put them off and turn to other games such as PGR and Forza. There is still no guarantee that GT5 will be amazing so it may end up being a fail, however that is highly unlikely.

It does seem like though that GT5:Prologue was a waste of time because it ultimately has meant this game is going to take longer to be finished.

Meh you know as well as we do that while GT, and GT5 incuded is a great racing sim, it's not hardcore :p

This is one of the reasons Forza 2 isn't a hit on the ame sale as GT was, it's too much sim for the casual gamers, everything is focused on simply racing and handling and all that. Simply said, the PGR and GT crowd can easily get bored with Forza.

GT5 isn't going there, they're adding simple dammage modeling yeah, but outside of that they're not about to take the gameut of the comfort zone of their fans. They probably do eventually a few years down the line want to hit the same sales numbers as GT4.
