USB Hub With A 1.3MP Webcam

Recommended Posts

USB hubs are useful peripherals, but most users have been unable to take full advantage of this feature. Therefore, Earth Trek has put USB hubs to good use and has launched the Travelling Webcam Hub.

With a stand to support it, the twin-port USB hub has a VGA quality 1.3 megapixel camera with a built-in mic, auto-focus, and auto-brightness. Touted as the 'hottest webcam,' it offers image quality with a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels.

The Travelling Webcam Hub is available at prices ranging from $45 to $50 at Earth Trek's site.

Wait, a 1.3MP camera that offers 640 x 480 images? Then it's not a 1.3MP camera O_o

I was thinking the same thing. Perhaps what they mean is that it does still images at 1.3MP but video at 640x480 (which is pretty common among webcams that I've seen). As for it having a built-in hub, I actually applaud this idea. Too many USB devices are "dead-ends" on the USB bus. The USB bus was designed for daisy-chaining, but few devices take advantage of this. It would make life a lot simpler for people like me with many different USB devices hooked up to a limited number of ports.

the idea was to daisy chain things on USB, but it wasn't designed for it. or it was, ery very badly.

Especially if you're on USB2, wich most likely wouldn't survive the first device. Then there's the power issues, long cables kill USB power supply, daisy chaning, kills it even faster, again dropping you to USB1 at the very least, and more importantly stopping devices who require a high power signal (printers for example) from working at all.
