Just announced:

nokia_n97_white_13a_lowres.jpg

Details are coming in but it's official. The N97 features a large touchscreen phone with a retail price at around 550 euros ($693.4) excluding subsidies and taxes, phone to ship in H1 2009. The N97 packs a 3.5-inch, 640 x 360 pixel (that's a 16:9 aspect ratio) touchscreen display and QWERTY into this sliding communicator with an "always open" window to favorite internet or social networking sites. Nokia calls it the "world's most advanced mobile computer." To back up the claim they've dropped in HSDPA and WiFi radios, 32GB of onboard memory with microSD expansion, and a battery capable of up to 1.5 days of continuous audio playback. 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss glass and "DVD quality" video capture, too. The specs are certainly impressive, let's see if the S60 5th Editition OS can support it.

I think they should upgrade the camera seeing as it's gonna be the new flagship model, we've got phones with 8 or 8.1MP.

Also, bring back the dedicated graphics processor from the N95, as well as increase the CPU speed from the N96 as it took a step down from the N95 with the N96.

Also, of course, keep bringing out Nseries with a standard pure tactile interface, touch-screen completely taking over wouldn't be good, in my opinion.

I don't think they will ever completely go touch screen. I don't think they want to alienate the Nseries from the other model brackets.

Also, with the amount of stuff this thing reportedly does, I think the graphics processor and CPU speed will be enough.

It really seems like they've tried a lot with this one. Waiting for reviews, though.

it look good and nice

but they failed to report one thing ! the battery life !

who long would that thing last before you have to recharge it ??? it would be a waste if it just last a day or two

It states that it could run music for a day and a half, that's about 36 hours of music. Look elsewhere for talk-time.

The same 5.0 MP camera with dual-LED 'flash' is ridiculous these days. Not so much the megapixel count, but a Xenon flash should be mandatory for Nokia flagship models these days, especially after the success of the quality of the N82 low-light photos.

However, I don't believe a dedicated graphics processor is required for this line of phones. Nothing on the N95 really used it, and I can't see that changing much with the N97.

It's no iPhone.

Many more pictures here:

http://www.mobile-review.com/review/nokia-world-08.shtml

Looks really cool but I can't help but think it won't be as fast as the iPhone. Lack of dedicated graphics? The only reason the iPhone is so damn smooth is because of Open GL acceleration!!

I hope it is as good as it looks!

Nokia is putting dual-LEDs in their flagships because it can illuminate video. Read dozens of articles online about their intents.

Has a price tag been set? I'm looking at either buying the Blackberry Storm or the (this) N97 to replace my current phone. I've always loved Nokia phones in the past, but the new Blackberry Storm looks gorgeous too :(

I hate the N95, almost everyone has it, and its too chunky. The iPhone is almost a gimmick as every second person has one these days.

The 8MP cameras as seen by companies like Sony (C905) and Samsung's latest offerings are duds. Problem being they have the same sensor size as 5MP cameras and so only offer the same quality. You get a very noisy picture when taking 8MP shots.

You can search for image comparison reviews that show side by side images.

The increase from 5 to 8 is purely for marketing reasons and will not make your images any nicer.
