Want Windows 7 Beta 1? Here's what you have to do.

Recommended Posts

PDC attendees got the Windows 7 pre-beta build, and Microsoft told them that a public beta would be available in early 2009. But you don't want to wait until then, right? You want Beta 1, right now. Well, I can't give you that, but I can tell you how you can get your hands on a physical copy of the Windows 7 Beta 1 DVD. You'll need $100 and a desire to visit one of the upcoming episodes of the MSDN Developer Conference (MDC). Here are the dates and locations you can register for:

  • 12/9/08 - Houston, TX
  • 12/11/08 - Orlando, FL
  • 12/16/08 - Atlanta, GA
  • 1/13/09 - Chicago, IL
  • 1/13/09 - Minneapolis, MN
  • 1/16/09 - Washington, DC
  • 1/20/09 - New York, NY
  • 1/22/09 - Boston, MA
  • 1/22/09 - Detroit, MI
  • 1/26/09 - Dallas, TX
  • 2/19/09 - San Francisco, CA

All attendees will be getting a copy, though it's not clear whether Microsoft will be mailing them out or giving them in person (rumor has it that the DVDs will only be ready by January 13). Check out the sessions and about pages for more information. If you're going, you might as well check out all the other things Microsoft will be discussing, including Windows Azure and the Azure Services Platform, Live Framework and Mesh services, Microsoft SQL Data Services, Silverlight 2, ASP.NET 4.0, JQuery, Oslo, Visual Studio 2010, and Microsoft F#. Still not enough for you? Well, there will be giveaways at each event as well: three MSDN Subscriptions, three Robotics Packs, three Mobility Packs, and three Gamer Packs.

no seattle?!?!

I guess everyone in seattle who'd be interested already work for MS :p

Yeah, I was disappointed in that too. I'm planning on going to one of these, and since Seattle is my favorite city, I would have gone to that one :( Now I have to settle for DC (since it is the closest).

I thought beta 1 would be public??

so why pay 100 dollar for it?? :s

you are paying for the show not the copy :)

i believe the attendee well be getting it first then we will get shortly after some time in January

Man, I'm glad I don't have to go back through these days of desperation to get in a Microsoft beta. BTW, Windows 7 seems to be coming together nicely based on the screenshot's from different Microsoft conferences.

    • Tim Cook: "The US over time began to stop having as many vocational kinds of skills." What's the point of wasting time getting those skills if you can't get a job with them? Good Lord, maybe he and his cohort of CEO's who exported all these jobs to China should just shut the f**k up :D
    • I made a new Cinematic/Trailer for the game, this will be the intro, still a work in progress!  I also updated the Steam page with a ton of new screenshots! 👀 https://store.steampowered.com/app/3925340/Incoherence_Dark_Rooms/
    • Closed-loop cooling and a custom 800G network protocol let the $7.3B campus run as one AI training machine. Microsoft confirmed June 23, 2026, that its Fairwater campus in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, is fully operational — and the engineering behind it makes the facility something fundamentally different from every data center that came before it. Where conventional cloud infrastructure racks up general-purpose servers and parcels out workloads to each one independently, Fairwater links hundreds of thousands of NVIDIA GB200 Blackwell GPUs into a single, coherent cluster using a two-story building design, 800-gigabit-per-second Ethernet fabric, and a proprietary networking protocol co-developed with OpenAI and NVIDIA. The result, according to Microsoft, is the closest thing to a purpose-built AI supercomputer that any company has ever placed in commercial operation. https://www.techtimes.com/articles/319205/20260627/microsoft-opens-fairwater-wisconsin-ai-campus-runs-one-supercomputer-via-800g-ethernet.htm
