My Computer Shows 2 CD Drives, I've Only Got One

When I open My Computer in XP it shows 2 CD Drives:

Problem is:

I only have one. What gives?

what does device manager show?

have you installed any apps like daemon tools etc?

Have you installed something like Nero, Daemon Tools, Alcohol. As they'll install a virtual drive and that is probably what that cd drive is.

Do you have a thumbdrive plugged in? Some thumb drives from sandisk and PNY, as well as others, come with a "CD" partition on them, and will show up as a CD drive as well when you plug it in....basically the thumbdrive looks like 2 drives.

I have an old version of Nero installed but I've had it for a long time and this anomaly showed up very recently. I don't know what that other stuff is.

Actually I have a SanDisk thumbdrive, and it does do that, but when I plug it in I get a third drive (i.e. in addition to the "phantom drive").

Yeah I know, I got that to, but counting that I was showing three drives. Weird.

but yeah it's probably showed up there by accident if you probably plugged in anykind of a storage device.

It doesn't seem to be correlated with the thumb drive, because it doesn't do it all the time, and as you can see from the screenshot in the first post: when it does, it doesn't disappear after I remove the thumb drive. When I plug in the thumb drive I actually sometimes get three cd drives displayed, I know the thumb drive is programmed to be read as both a removable flash drive and a cd drive, but that still doesn't account for the second, additional cd drive.
