Ubuntu, Mounting a RAID 0 array with an NTFS partition

Hey guys,

I'm trying to mount a Intel RAID 0 Array spanning two SATA hard drives on Ubuntu 8.10 with little success.

Can anyone advice me on how to do this, I need access to the NTFS partition to make some modifications to it, i'm booting from a LiveCD BTW.

Is it hardware RAID, if so what controller are you running it on?

If it's software RAID, not sure if you're gonna have much success with that..

Hardware RAID and it's running on a Intel ICH8R/ICH9R/ICH10R SATA RAID Controller.

Is the RAID array active and stable in the bios? One would think Ubuntu should pick it up automatically given it's running on an intel raid

Yeah, I'm booting to Windows Vista on this very same Array. When Booting into Ubuntu and going into "Computer" I get "CD/DVD Drive" and "Filesystem" Filesystem obviously is just the small RAM Drive that's set aside.

If I go into "Partition Editor"/GParted, then I get both hard drives displaying as /dev/sda and /dev/sdb, but it does not show them as a RAID.

Any ideas? :blink:

I've always wanted to run RAID on my server as well but have always run into the exact same issue. (note, this is my desktop PC we're talking about, the server i'll tackle in the future)

According to this post it looks like you are dealing with a not-quite-hardware RAID.

And the Linux-ATA site has a little more information on the ICH sets. Not sure if the 8/9/10 sets can be made to work.

Well, thats a slap in the face with a wet fish, this is probably the only big let down for Linux for me. :'(

Think this'll be added in the near future or am I doomed to a life of Windows?

Well, 8,9 and 10 aren't clear, from what I see.

But, if companies don't release specs to help engineer drivers, or if they don't release them themselves (as ATI and nVidia do), then it is up to a talented few to try to reverse engineer. :(

Keep looking, there may be support. But it may be that the raid need to be created within Linux.

Worst case, there is dmraid, I think.

Hmm, I'll have a look into DMRAID.

Next up, slightly moving on topic.

I have a server, same issue and it's a Intel Chipset, and I want to RAID 0 that. How would I go about setting up a software raid in Ubuntu Server 8.10? Any useful links you could share?
