Honda to quit F1 over financial crisis

TOKYO (AFP) ? Honda said Friday that it was pulling out of Formula One due to the global financial crisis.b>

"Honda Motor Co. has come to the conclusion that we will withdraw from all Formula One activities, making 2008 the last season for participation," an emotional Honda Motor president Takeo Fukui told a press conference.

"This difficult decision has been made in light of the quickly deteriorating operating environment facing the global auto industry, brought on by the subprime problem in the United States, the deepening credit crisis and the sudden contraction of the world economies," he added.

Honda Motor also supplied engines and other technical support to Formula One team Super Aguri, which called it quits due to financial problems in May.

I had ths weird dream last night, that I was in Asda buying presents and food...buying lots...then my mom rang me and said Asda-Tesco-HSBC and Natwest had gone under and to not buy what I'd got in my trolley because it'll be cheaper tomorrow.

Then they announced it over the tannoy that everyone working for Asda no longer has a job, and people just flooded out the doors.

Was so bizarre and real.

It's a pity for Honda. As for Rubens - retire already!

Jenson Button. Hmmmm, I always thought his ego outweighed his talent. He squandered his chances and with the Williams contract fiasco he is damaged goods. On the other hand, I hope he gets a drive just to see if he is crap or it was always the car.

Now that the habitual moaner Coulthard is out of the picture maybe it is time for Jenson to quit and go and do something else. Bring on the young talent that at least has a go and tries to overtake and the doesn't blame the car all the frigging time.

Coulthard and Barrichello are legends mate!

The financial crisis is hurting everyone, including Acura which is their NA only brand. That on top of how lame the F1 became with their silly restrictions on car makers are good reasons to get out of the F1. If they do force the "same engine" bs next season, everyone will follow Ferrari's lead and leave at that moment.

This is the result of F1's silly regulations, getting out of the Canadian Grand Prix and the financial crisis where people think that NOT putting money into the economy will fix the economy.

Coulthard and Barrichello are legends mate!

If they're legends, then Ayrton Senna was God. Scratch that out, he was an F1 God :p

Ayrton is definitely a legend in Formula One history, but if you put him against Hamilton in a race today, I'm sure the Brit would come out on top ;)

Then again I'm a huge Hamilton fan

Even though he's won a driver's championship, Hamilton has none of the talent or drive that the likes of Senna or Schumacher had.

Yep, then it was Schumacher's time to dominate the next era with Hakkinen as his only worthy opponent.

Now the F1 is as boring as watching a game of bowling on a Sunday afternoon.

I'd disagree with that. The last race of this season was perhaps the greatest race I've ever seen. I was shocked at how Hamilton managed to win, and its quite obvious the F1 gods were on his side, but he was sliding all over the place on that last lap and he managed to keep the race alive.

Even though he's won a driver's championship, Hamilton has none of the talent or drive that the likes of Senna or Schumacher had.

Nonsense. He has already proved himself and has only just got started, something acknowledged by Schumacher. If you don't like the guy then that's fair enough but to say he has none of the talent of previous greats is patently untrue.

Yeah. He's not a particularly good racer nor does he have a particularly appealing personality. I certainly don't wish him out of his job but it wouldn't be a great surprise to me if he's not picked up by another team.

He hasn't only just started, he's been with McLaren for years, it's not as if he's just jumped into a Formula 1 car for the first time last year.

To say he's better than Senna is what is nonsense. He's yet to actually prove himself IMO. He's never driven anything other that one of the top F1 cars (and let's face it, given a McLaren or a Ferrari, most current F1 drivers would be up at the top end), and he hasn't put in any really spectacular drives to date IMO.

Examples of spectacular drives IMO are:

Schumacher, 1994 Spanish Grand Prix

Senna, 1988 Japanese Grand Prix

Fangio, 1957 German Grand Prix.

Those are all races where the driver in question excelled over the rest of the drivers or conditions.

I'll admit I don't like Hamilton as he's made the mistake of believing his own PR, and British drivers would appear to be the greatest in the world if you listen to F1 commentators from the UK. I'm also still not 100% convinced about the last lap of Brazil this season, but, that's another matter.

I'm not saying he's not a good driver, he is, like all the rest of the F1 drivers. He's just not worthy of being mentioned along with the great names like Fangio, Schumacher and Senna. Maybe he will be some day. Maybe he won't.

    • TeraCopy 4.0 Build 28 by Razvan Serea TeraCopy is a compact program designed to copy and move files at the maximum possible speed, also providing you with a lot of features. Copy files faster. TeraCopy uses dynamically adjusted buffers to reduce seek times. Asynchronous copy speeds up file transfer between two physical hard drives. Pause and resume transfers. Pause copy process at any time to free up system resources and continue with a single click. Error recovery. In case of copy error, TeraCopy will try several times and in the worse case just skips the file, not terminating the entire transfer. Interactive file list. TeraCopy shows failed file transfers and lets you fix the problem and recopy only problem files. Shell integration. TeraCopy can completely replace Explorer copy and move functions, allowing you work with files as usual. TeraCopy is free for non-commercial use only. For commercial use you need to buy a license. The paid version of the program includes the following features: Copy/move to your favorite folders. Save reports as HTML and CSV files. Select files with the same extension/folder. Remove the selected files from the copy queue. Features added since version 3.17: Enhanced speed graph. New multi-threaded copy engine. Support for copying to multiple targets. Queue system for managing multiple copy operations. Support for receiving files via the LocalSend protocol. TeraCopy entry in the modern Windows Explorer context menu. Integrated toolbar in the title bar. Why receive LocalSend transfers with TeraCopy? Handle file conflicts: Skip, overwrite, or rename files when a file with the same name already exists. LocalSend always creates another copy, which can waste time and disk space, especially when resuming an interrupted transfer. Filter unwanted files: Apply ignore lists or remove files manually before accepting a transfer, so unnecessary files are not downloaded. Better performance on fast networks: In tests over a 10 Gbps connection, TeraCopy received files several times faster than the standard LocalSend app on Windows. TeraCopy 4.0 Build 28 changelog: Fixed a bug where Overwrite behaved as Overwrite All during same-drive move operations. AdvancedInstaller fixed the installer’s security vulnerability: EXE Bootstrapper resolved the %appdata% location incorrectly for the System account. • New AMD graphics driver fixes install issues and FSR 4.1 crashes on RX 7000 GPUs by Taras Buria AMD is rolling out yet another graphics driver. Version 26.6.4 is now available for download, bringing two important fixes. One is for those still using Windows 10 and having trouble installing driver 26.6.2. In fact, this patch is coming from the recently released hotfix, so it is not new if you are already running version 26.6.3. The second fix is for RX 7000 owners. AMD recently brought FSR 4.1 support to the previous-gen graphics cards, but there was a bug with certain games crashing when using FSR 4.1. I experienced this issue with Forza Horizon 6, so today's driver should take care of that. Here is the official changelog: Intermittent install issue seen when installing AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.6.2 on Windows® 10 systems for Radeon™ RX 7000 series and above graphics products. Intermittent application crash may be observed in some games with AMD FSR Upscaling 4.1 enabled on Radeon™ RX 7000 series graphics products. Known issues include the following: Intermittent application crash or driver timeout may be observed while playing Battlefield™ 6 on AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370. AMD is actively working on a resolution with the developer to be released as soon as possible. Texture flickering or corruption may appear while playing Battlefield™ 6 with AMD Record and Stream on some AMD graphics products. AMD FSR Upscaling and AMD FSR Frame Generation may show as inactive in AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition while playing Battlefield™ 6 when enabled on Radeon™ RX 9000 series graphics products. Failure to install may be observed while installing AI Bundle components in some regions with limited access to HuggingFace and GitHub. Model flickering or rendering failure may be observed in Maxon Cinema 4D and Blender on Radeon™ RX 7000 series and above graphics products. Users experiencing this issue are recommended to install AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.3.1. Intermittent application crash may be observed on some models while running Blender on Radeon™ RX 7000 series and above graphics products. Users experiencing this issue are recommended to install AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.3.1. You can download the AMD Radeon driver 26.6.4 from the official website here. • Amazon may use OpenAI and Nova models after Anthropic reportedly raises costs by Karthik Mudaliar Amazon is reportedly considering to use OpenAI models and even its own Nova family of AI models after Anthropic raised the cost of using Claude inside Amazon services. According to a report from The Information, Amazon is weighing its options to reduce costs under a new arrangement with Anthropic. But back in April, Amazon said it would invest $5 billion more in Anthropic, with the possibility of adding up to another $20 billion if certain commercial milestones are met. That investment actually came on top of another $8 billion Amazon had already put into the Claude maker. Anthropic, meanwhile, committed to spend more than $100 billion over 10 years on AWS technologies, including Amazon’s Trainium chips. Amazon isn't just a customer of Anthropic but also one of the most important backers and cloud partners. This is why it makes it interesting that Amazon is considering other alternatives to handle its internal workloads. Although Amazon has been building its own options for a while now. Its Nova family of AI models was announced in late 2024 for Amazon Bedrock, with models aimed at text, image, and video tasks. Amazon pitched the model around cost and latency at that time. With that said, OpenAI has also become a more realistic option recently for AWS customers as well as for Amazon itself. Earlier this year, OpenAI brought its latest models and Codex coding agent to Amazon Bedrock, after changes to its previously more restrictive Microsoft cloud arrangement. This allowed AWS to serve even those customers who wanted other alternatives from Claude, without having to move workloads out of Amazon's cloud. Evaluating alternatives could also be due to commercial pressure and not necessarily a sign of a damaged partnership between Amazon and Anthropic. Whether or not Amazon is actually considering switching entirely to OpenAI's models or its own Nova models remains unknown at this moment.
