PricklyPoo
Well, like the title says, I'm looking for the best P2P client for Linux. I use frostwire with windows, which works reasonably well, but imo, could perform much better. I see that this is also for Linux, but are there any better alternatives? More specifically, lightweight alternatives, I don't care much for the extra bloat that limewire and frostwire offer. Thanks in advance. :)
4CxbqFxVnstmA Veteran Posted December 11, 2008 Veteran Share Posted December 11, 2008 Transmission is default in Ubuntu, and works quite well. It's what I have now. Back earlier I thought Deluge was better but now I'm not convinced.
fix-this!
if your a fan of utorrent go with deluge. if you want lightweight go with the default transmission.

Back earlier I thought Deluge was better but now I'm not convinced. He's not asking for a torrent based solution, he's asking for something similar to Frostwire. I personally (but very rarely) use Gnutella. http://gtk-gnutella.sourceforge.net/en/?page=news
PricklyPoo
Well more specifically a client that connects to a network such as Gnutella. Edit: Thanks Echo, I'll try that, looks good.

Sorry! I don't know much then. I just use P2P for distribution of things like Ubuntu and free software. I guess you can use those other protocols for such things, but the bittorrent protocol is mostly used for them so I use it to save on bandwidth. Well I just installed Ubuntu yesterday for the first time and just want to test random things. :p I'm really liking it, except my only complaint is the not so great flash playback. I downloaded the 64 bit version of ubuntu, so the 64 bit version of flash 10 is in beta, it skips a little on high res videos, but I guess it works reasonably well. cbk486
Try linux mint. I love it. All sorts of tweaks and skins that make ubuntu much more enjoyable in my opinion.
fix-this!
Try linux mint. I love it i agree, mint is a solid os but what does it have to do with a p2p application he's looking for ?

Gary2MBz
For Frostwire, there are Linux versions as well. For torrents, Transmission and Azureus Vuze work well Deluge always makes my connection act up when it doesn't use any bandwidth at all.

atlef
Gtk-Gnutella might be an alternative for you. It's in the repositories. atlef.

ddtt21958
There is also Phex, though I've never used it. I have a somewhat older system with Ubuntu, and Frostwire seems to run ok on it.
PricklyPoo
Well I tried both Gtk-Gnutella and Frostwire...Obviously gtk-gnutella runs much faster, but i still can't decide, I'll just use which ever. The only thing better about Frostwire is that it seems more updated with the gnutella network so it finds more results. But it's programmed in java so it's ssssllloooowww. Kreuger
You could try aMule or Nicotine+, those are other good ones. aMule connects to Gnutella (I think) and Nicotine to Soulseek's servers. Edit: And also Shareaza's team are working on a new version (renamed Panthera) that will have native linux releases. You could try that too. LightIdea
I totally forgot about Phex, I use it on windows and I forgot they made a linux client. They also use Java, but for me it seems quicker than frostwire in terms of searching.
ichi
There's also mldonkey, which despite it's name connects to a lot of different networks besides ed2k.
ceminess
gtk-gnutella is the way to go! I have always found what I'm looking for. frostwire freezes too much for me, damn java!
PricklyPoo
Ya, I've been using gtk-gnutella, after forwarding ports it works pretty well. So thanks. :)
ootput
Ya, I've been using gtk-gnutella, after forwarding ports it works pretty well.So thanks. :) I used to use the giFT daemon (w/ fasttrack, ares, and gnutella plugins) and giFT-curses console client. It was much faster than it's gui alternatives. I'm not sure if development has ceased, though.
