Did my XP SP3 upgrade succeed?

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks!

I need some help ascertaining whether my upgrade to SP3 has been successful.

I created a System Restore point just before installing SP3 from Windows Update site yesterday night.

Since it was taking quite a long time to download and install, I started working on something else and forgot about the upgrade. After about 30 minutes, I felt sleepy and semi-consciously shutdown my laptop!(yes it's stupid) ... there were a couple of errors during shutdown like "OUTLOOK.EXE not responding" though I did not have Outlook running at that time.

When I booted up my laptop in the morning, there was extended bootup activity with a couple of new Win XP splash screens saying "Please Wait..." ... then I got a screen which said 'Congrats on installing SP3' and prompted me to Turn On Automatic Updates. I chose to keep it turned off and clicked on Next. Thereafter, Win XP booted normally and I got my user login (welcome) page.

A subsequent restart gave me normal shutdown and bootup sequence. I looked in Control Panel > Add Remove Programs, and Windows XP SP3 is listed there. I went to Windows Update website and SP3 was not offered to me again. A couple of newer updates were offered, including a Security Update for SP3. I have installed those updates too.

Now, I found from the web that the Log file for SP3 installer is C:\Windows\SvcPack.log

The last lines in the log file left me wondering whether the installation was successful --

I tried attaching the complete log file here but got an error message saying I am not permitted to upload "this type of file".

Can someone please help me figure out if the installation of SP3was successful, or I need o do a System Restore (rollback) and install SP3 again?

Thanks a ton in advance!

Right click 'My Computer', select Properties.

if it says XP SP3, then yes, it was successful, if it don't, then redo the install.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong. I would say that SP3, like any other updates, when interrupted, will carry on installing once you have restarted you PC. This is pretty much what will happen when your automatic updates are on! SP3 is essentially a roll-up of updates and most, if not all of them, only finish installing once the PC has restarted anyway.

If certain elements were not installed correctly, rerun the Service Pack or failing that, you can uninstall it and then run it again.

Cheers, hope this helps in some way!

Okay it does say SP3 --

System:

Microsoft Windows XP

Home Edition

Version 2002

Service Pack 3

Hmm, I wouldn't mind reinstalling it. But i was wary of playing with all those options since it was a significant system upgrade, especially in case a rollback/reinstall was unnecessary.

If certain elements were not installed correctly...

Is there a way I can figure that out?

Thanks both for the quick response! Have fun this holiday season.

By the way, I was wondering ... how do the last few lines of SP3 log look like in a normal install?

The last line in my log file is --

1298.094: RebootNecessary = 1,WizardInput = 1 , DontReboot = 1, ForceRestart = 0

Thanks,

There is a significant amount of updates AFTER SP3 so I would also go to the Windows update page and install all of the critical updates! Also IE7 plus the Malicious Software Update should be installed!

Stay well and happy holidays to you to! :)

I am busy reinstalling MS Windows XP Home SP3 on a PC that I had to replace the Motherboard, Processor, HDD and RAM and I have just completed the updates after SP3 and she's running like a dream!
