The best anti-virus is no anti-virus! I've been running free of AV on Vista for a year now, and I must say, it's just a relief. Even on the family computer, I have just anti-spyware and the firewall on the router, and I don't need to reformat any more often than before.

And you know you have no viruses how..................?

Microsoft Security Essentials Beta picks up more then AVG did on my system.

MSE is now my favorite AV. Its also very light-weight.

Windows OneCare is essentially MSE as it is suppose to replace it. Also its probly based on much of the same source code. I use MSE and checked OneCare in place of it.

VIPRE Antivirus. Because it's light weight, not that expensive and best of all it has the ability to shut down extra services (except for the scanner itself of course) the moment you are working on the battery. (Handy for us mobile laptop users).

I have Norton 2009 and I'll renew my just-about-to-run-out subscription. It's footprint is smaller than that of a baby, even though I have a PC with lots of juice under the hood. I also read a review of KIS 2010 in this month's PC Pro and they weren't impressed. It did manage to let some malware slip in. Also, it was noted that its pricing didn't represent a good value for money. Symantec turned it around for me with their NIS 09 and I'm sticking with them.

Haven't been running AV since Windows 7 Beta. I do like Nod32 so should probably put that back in, although is there a way to switch off automatic definition updates temporarily? Can slow me down on this comp when gaming sometimes =P

Hello,

Try opening the ESET user interface, pressing Ctrl + M to toggle the Advanced display, and then select Tools in the left pane and Scheduler in the right pane. The various scheduled tasks in the program can be enabled or disabled from there.

The antivirus is questionable. I have been using antiviruses from 2001,my opinion is that the antiviruses differ from one year to other.

for ex:norton was best choice in 2001-2003 but panda antivirus was best in 2003-2005

I personally use most of the leading antiviruses including norton,mcafee,panda,nod32,avast,avira,calmav,vipre,bitdefender,avg and kaspersky.

see wether you have the best choice av with this list.my opinion is most of the best antivirus lists contained those antiviruses i have mentioned.

when you select the antivirus protection it is better to have firewall (internet security) solutions.though most of the antivirus providers say they have good internet security suite my preference is mostly towards kaspersky 2009 (i have used 2010 also,but can't say about it such early) and bit defender 2009.

vipre is one of the leading av's in the market,but it is not a complete suite.it is light and efficient in operation for most of the times,good competitor for kaspersky 2009 av.

i have been using bit defender for 3 years,and it is little bit heavy compared to kaspersky 7 (but when compared to 8 and 2009 it's a very slight performence. )

why you use internet security /antivirus is to detect most of the viruses in your hard drive and internet,my personal experience is that bit defender 2009 is better in that also.

best software is not the 100% marks for all attributes,but the best of the overall.

you may have different opinions about this,but i'm sure when you compare products overall

Trend Micro Internet Security 2009 or NAV/NIS 2009 hands down :) I'm sure many people will claim NAV/NIS 2009 is one of the worst AV programs around but that is their problem, if they want to let their "anti-Symantec goggles" blind them from the truth (that the 2009 Norton products are quite good) that is their loss.

I've switched from Eset Smart Security 4 to Microsoft Security Essentials and it has bee working great the last few weeks. MSE actually caught some stuff last weekend too when I had some friends over on the PC so it seems to be effective as well as unobtrusive!
