A Cinematic Video Experience

We're now introducing the next generation of DivX technology with DivX 7 — our new software that lets you create and play full HD H.264 (MKV) videos. H.264 is a new standard that is poised to power the high definition video revolution by offering incredible visual quality, performance and efficiency. DivX 7 gives you all the tools you need to take full advantage of H.264 for a truly cinematic video experience.

H.264

H.264 is the new standard for high definition (HD) digital video, and for good reason. A codec based on the H.264 standard compresses a digital video file so that it only uses half the space of MPEG-2 (the DVD standard), to deliver the same quality video. This means you can enjoy stunning HD video the way it was meant to be seen without sacrificing speed or performance.

That’s why we based the latest generation of DivX? 7 software on the H.264 standard — it uses less data and offers smoother playback and faster encoding. It’s simply the best choice to deliver HD video on your computer today. And in the near future, you’ll be able to have the same cinematic video experience on all your devices — from the TV to your mobile phone

AAC>

Advanced Audio Coding (AAC), the preferred audio format for high definition videos, is a substantial improvement on the well-known MP3 format and has become the standard for high-quality digital audio.

The AAC standard is the perfect complement to the H.264 video technology that powers DivX? 7 for Windows, providing superior audio to match the HD video on your computer, in your living room or on the go.MKVb>

With its unique ability to store multiple formats and media features (subtitles, audio tracks, etc.) in a single container, MKV has quickly gained in popularity — becoming the preferred file extension for high definition (HD) video. Millions of online videos use the .mkv file extension, with more coming every day.

With DivX? Pro 7 software, we optimized the file container so you can create new DivX Plus™ HD videos with the .mkv extension and playback existing .mkv files from the Internet. DivX Plus HD files contain booming AAC audio tracks and stunning H.264 video — delivering the best cinema-quality HD resolutions on the computer today. And as more .mkv files become available, you’ll be able to enjoy the same HD experience on all your devices.

now for sony to include this in an update for PS3 :D

Which will give me the chance to break people's hearts

Supporting the container makes things no easier, since it doesn't mean any better compatibility support for your downloaded movies.

Pirates rip the majority of HD content in "profile 5.1", PS3 only supports up to "profile 4.1", which applications such as MKV2VOB can change 720p content to in seconds/minutes, but 95% of 1080p content won't playback without transcoding (which takes hours).

Will be exactly the same scenario even if support for the MKV container is added.

The funny thing is, for quality reasons there's absolutely no reason for the pirates to rip in "profile 5.1", they've just choose to do it which is unfortunate for many PS3 owners ;)

I know this as I rip my Blu Ray movies in profile 4.1, and it makes no difference whatsoever to 720p or 1080p encodes.

Haha, when I read the thread title I read it as "DX7" (aka DirectX 7) and not "DivX 7". Then I thought to myself, "Holy crap how old is this thread?!"

Wow...talk about a slow-to-wake-up Tuesday morning. :pinch: I need more coffee.

To be fair Spacer I did the exact same thing, the worst bit is it took three attempts to read it before I finally noticed the DivX part... Bloody revision is messing with my head.

Not that i know about such things but a majority of the rips that come out now use profile 3.1/4.1 so media players can use hardware video acceleration and the standalones like Popcorn Hour and WDTV can play them, not that i advocate such things i like to read up on what settings to use for my own owned dvs and blu-rays to rip for myself.

any advantage over FFdshow
none

Er yes, its a much more lightweight decoder than ffdshow you will be able to play 720p and 1080p on cpus you wouldnt normally be able to and uses less resources to do so.

Yeah things can change, but there's still a large back catalog in 5.1 ;)

Still all of this is no reason NOT to welcome DivX 7 to our consoles, it will be a good upgrade (Y)

(especially if the PS3 can now get AAC support - I'm not sure if it currently has it?)

If I install this, does that mean I'll be able to play H.264 .mkv vids inside of Media Center now? If not, what's an easy way to do that? I can get them to show up using a reg hack, but how do I get them to play and would I still have rewind, fast forward, etc controls using the remote? Would CoreAVC help to playback .mkv vids inside of Media Center? Let me know! Thanks!

I remember way back when this codec was (mostly) for porn. I remember forums posts that read something like, "Hey, I'm trying to get <X movie> to play but it says I need something called 'Divx.' How do I fix it?"

CCCP - Combined Community Codec, I think the actual codec for MKV is part of that, but its what I use on MCE 2005 and does DivX and others as well. :)

I wonder if this means I can play back non-divx files in the DivX web player now..

Edit: Nope.

It's pretty close to CoreAVC in terms of performance. I ran a quick test on a sample video.

How does CoreAVC compare to say the CCCP? Sometimes I get a lot of weird issues with ffdshow, but I don't know what the problem is. I'm running the 64bit version of Vista.

I would really like it if my 360 would support mkv

Don't hold your breath. We're talking about a container that's used almost exclusively for pirated content. I don't think they'll be breaking their necks to get support added for it. Would be nice if they started supporting higher bit rates and multi-channel audio for h.264 files.

Hahaha! We've been around for too long!

    • This is of course "clickbait" WTF? It is literally your example but tech based. A "clickbait" title is a sensationalized headline designed to manipulate readers into clicking a link using things like "fear" rather than delivering objective facts. A "clickbait" headline also usually provides little value compared to the hype generated. How does this headline not qualify? It's a generic often reused headline that is overly sensationalized. Oh no! "millions" can't use this app anymore. It has no basic facts like what f*cking app. You read the article and it's the Samsung VPN which no one cares about and there is a million free VPNs. How are you defending this ######? Headlines like this (and among other things) make me read Neowin much less than I used to in the past. It's trash...
