afusion
Since Divx is now apart of Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 is there an obligation for these peripherals to receive the updated version of the codec with the included support listed? Kraftman
Since Divx is now apart of Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 is there an obligation for these peripherals to receive the updated version of the codec with the included support listed? The Xbox 360 is not a DivX certified device, was never promised to be one, and will likely never become one. It is however, a very competent MPEG-4 decoder. Got3n
I would really like it if my 360 would support mkv https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?show...#entry589142952 I used this thread and it helped alot, same settings work for me on either the PS3 or Xbox360, it takes my machine about 4 minutes to convert a 720p.mkv I really suggest trying it. Pc_Madness
Then how do you explain the playback capabilities of these consoles? (.divx and .avi) Xvid I think? Avi isn't specific to DivX. I really wish they would add mkv and xH264 5.1 support to the 360, I have to keep converting mine to MPEG4 and no 5.1 :( (using GotSent, seems to do ok) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/718154-divx-7-out-a-cinematic-experience-on-your-computer/page/2/#findComment-590375040 Share on other sites

+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted January 7, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted January 7, 2009 Being certified means Sony will have to update to DivX 7 at some point. Microsoft do not have to update. I've already explained in this thread, all the consoles will get out of this is the mkv container support, no codecs will be changing. H.264 is already supported. edit: In fact, I may be telling a lie, if DivX7 uses AAC, then it means the PS3/360 if it updated, may now have support for AAC. I don't think they currently do. Kraftman
Then how do you explain the playback capabilities of these consoles? (.divx and .avi) Playstation 3, IIRC, is a DivX certified device. I am not 100% sure of this. I am 100% sure that the XBox 360 is not DivX certified. What does this mean? Absolutely nothing. DivX is merely a subset MPEG-4 Part 2. Read http://blogs.msdn.com/xboxteam/archive/200...ayback-faq.aspx for more clarification. For further proof check http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/ps3-divx-test/p...-360-335062.php. What is the point of this? This means that Microsoft has no obligation whatsoever to add MKV support at any time. Sony does have more of an obligation, as they are a DivX certified device. Either way though, you cannot complain about lack of free features and alternatives like mkv2vob have made H.264 + 5.1 easy on the PS3. Being certified means Sony will have to update to DivX 7 at some point.Microsoft do not have to update. The_Decryptor Veteran Posted January 7, 2009 Veteran Share Posted January 7, 2009 CCCP - Combined Community Codec, I think the actual codec for MKV is part of that, but its what I use on MCE 2005 and does DivX and others as well. :)http://www.cccp-project.net/ (prepare to be blinded) I wonder if this means I can play back non-divx files in the DivX web player now.. Edit: Nope. MKV is the container, you need a splitter to let windows read out the data, then a codec to decode it. DivX 7 comes with the splitter and the codecs to decode H.264 and AAC. Crazysah
So is DivX now better than CCCP? Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/718154-divx-7-out-a-cinematic-experience-on-your-computer/page/2/#findComment-590376864 Share on other sites
The_Decryptor Veteran Posted January 7, 2009 Veteran Share Posted January 7, 2009 CCCP still supports a lot more codecs. DivX 7 might have a better performing codec for H.264 (etc.) than CCCP has, in that case you just deactivate ffdshow for those formats and let DivX handle them. Unknown_97784568745
From what I gather Divx7 is a h264 codec. I wonder how this compares to x264... No, DivX 7 is a collection of codecs. DivX itself is an implementation of MPEG4 ASP or MPEG4 Part 2, same goes for XviD. H.264 is MPEG4 AVC or MPEG4 Part 10. x264 is an H.264 encoder. MKV is the container, you need a splitter to let windows read out the data, then a codec to decode it.DivX 7 comes with the splitter and the codecs to decode H.264 and AAC. A very incomplete splitter though. No support for softsubs, anamorphic or chapters. mancode20
So in order to get H.264 .mkv vids to work inside of Windows Media Center, I just install Divx 7? Since someone said it has the splitter and codecs needed, or is it better to install the CCCP? What about CoreAVC Pro? It doesn't have the splitter included? Thanks to anyone that can help! MKV and H.264 are unrelated, but MKV can support H.264 content, and it's a good container, hence why it's used. What I'm saying is, installing a codec doesn't necessarily give you splitters for random container formats. CCCP is a package containing a MKV spiltter as well as a bunch of codecs, of course if you don't use any of them it might be better to install CoreAVC and the splitter by themselves (or whatever combo you want) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/718154-divx-7-out-a-cinematic-experience-on-your-computer/page/2/#findComment-590381412 Share on other sites

According to Gizmodo the PS3 being certified means that "the console natively supports the codec, so games can play back DivX files as their in-game cut scene movies".
