PS3 sales up 130 per cent during Christmas

Recommended Posts

A Sony Computer Entertainment America exec has said sales of PS3 were up by more than 130 per cent during the festive period.

"We've had a solid holiday season and have delivered consistent growth throughout this year," said sales vice president Ian Jackson, in a statement to CNET.

He described 2008 as "a pivotal year for PlayStation" with "the best software line-up in the industry" on offer.

"Early internal data points to an increase of more than 130 per cent of PS3 hardware sales for the holiday season - since Black Friday - and we're also seeing a growth of nearly 40 per cent in total PS3 hardware sales for the calendar year," Jackson continued. "We remain confident this momentum will continue into the new year."

As the CNET article points out, PS3 sales were down by 18.8 per cent for November 2008 compared to the same month a year previously. Xbox 360 sales were up by 8.6 per cent, while the figure for Wii rose by 108 per cent.

But Sony said this was an anomaly, blaming "an abnormally strong month due to a price cut (with) the introduction of the 40GB PS3".

Disagree big time. I even know for a fact that people who said they would enjoy the line up more on the PS3 this season, were signed into XBL and playing 360 games more (I was there with them on WaW ;)). Talking about dual console owners btw. That's quite a contrast when many of them believed that it had the stronger line up.

Launching R2 up against GoW2 was a big mistake, they should have learnt from first time around in 2006 (N)

Pivotal and changing year for the PS3, agreed, but not what it was hyped up to be at the start of the year (and end of 2007).

Ok I'm going to ask again, do you actually offer anything to this community Jeremy? You're probably double the post count since I last asked and still trolling the boards and causing nothing but grief.

At least my reply offers discussion for people to start a discussion with me.

I can't wait until you're banned from NW. You know it's coming right? :)

Critically, probably the strongest line-up, MGS4 and LBP have been cleaning up quite a few awards (two highest rated titles on metacritic also).

However the minute we start arguing opinions, everyone is going to blast off with a different perception of who's software was "better"... So really, ignore the PR, or we'll see this topic turn into yet another stupid 360 vs PS3 argument.

Anyway, good year for every console (that we should all agree with), much better PS3 software than last, they just need affordability now. So the price cut better be soon into 2009 or else all the seemingly good software lined up for 09, is going to have a high price barrier to entry for many.

So your measure for "best line-up" is whether or not people are playing games online?! That's ridiculous.

No they obviously want to avoid the best games out there and play the crap ones instead

And again, this is a comparison of some of the "hardcore" crowd here on Neowin, not the entire install base. I think its far more interesting to talk about trends here at NW, since you know, we're actually members here..

Wow huge news, they sold more over xmas. You would expect sales to be higher, it's not news. Doesn't change the fact it got absolutely eclipsed by 360 sales. It'll only get further behind until they finally relent and have a price cut, by which time the other consoles will be ready for another one anyway.

I would disagree it has the strongest software line up -- MGS4 and LBP but nothing else.

Yet he says I'm the one trolling.

DM, as for a ban, when I break the rules I will expect one. Until then, stop trying to play moderator.

The PS3 sales are doing just fine. They have sold more per year than the 360 and as the 360 is less than half the price, that aint bad going is it.

As for software, depends - your opinion is that, other people will say it has.

Yes you are the troll, or maybe you think your post deserves post of the year? All 2 lines of it :/

And like I said, as for NW, the majority of members around here were by far signed into XBL playing games more than the PS3.

I don't think one successful holiday season will put Sony at the top of the console market. They've hard more than enough time to listen to the community and rectify their mistakes. But alas, Sony was being Sony and kept their eyes on their own agenda. It's a shame because the PS3 really is a powerful machine, but not groundbreaking enough for me (or anyone else I know) to make room for it in the budget. It still has potential, but until there's a strong, consistent demand, it will be nothing more than a fancy Blu-Ray player to me.

They have sold more per year than the 360

Uh, no they haven't, unless you're talking solely about Japan, but that an exception, not the rule. The 360 has the PS3 dominated in NA, and it's edging it out in Europe so I really would love to know what you're talking about.

Anyways, it's nice to hear some good news about PS3 sales, even if it's what we'd expect.

Well they are up, and it was expected coming from a PR. It won't unleash a comeback to batter the Wii and 360, but it would be interesting to see the revenue each company has generated from the consoles. This may be slightly closer with the same results. As the PS3 was so overpriced and was a do-it-all machine, no one really bothered and went for the cheaper options of the 360 and Wii. There's no point looking at sales when the consoles are at such varied prices.

@Bri- : I think you're absolutely right. And I heard that the processer is only using 3 of the 5+ cores on the cell on current gen games. Can anyone enlighten me on this subject and actually tell me if its actually true? Because if it is, there definitely is some potential in that machine.

I see all these articles saying how well the Xbox 360 is selling having now reached its landmark of 28 Million consoles since its release in December 05.

I also see loads of articles talking about how the PS3 is failing fast and is a sales flop since its release in December 06 having only sold 20 million consoles worldwide.

Now correct me if im wrong but it is now January 09, therefore the 360 has sold around 9 million consoles a year since its release, however the PS3 has sold 10 million per year has it not?? If this is the case then someone please tell me why the PS3 is failing??

p.s I have both consoles and like them both equally, however these articles bashing Sony really annoy me because they are false, because as far as I can see the PS3 is far from failing.

Really? This ^ seems to be the case and if so, how can the 360 be outselling it worldwide?

Actually, don't bother answering as I don't care. I own a Ps3, I'm more than happy with it, and I don't own shares in either Sony or Microsoft.

Oh wait, I'm wrong, I mean - https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=718256

Got my sections mixed up there...

Seriously guys, stop the fighting. DL said he hoped the Sony section would be less of a warzone in 2009, the SONY section, not the GH.

These are just Christmas sales topics, a time to say well done Sony/MS/Nintendo for making so many people happy at Christmas, not another ****ing "my console is better than yours" bitch fest. Think about all the happy kids at Christmas!

Seriously, lets try cleanup this place and get along better for 2009. There's a time and place for comparing till your fingers bleed, contrary to belief that is not in EVERY topic in the Sony section

And no, don't play the PR card, every company thinks their lineup is the best every year, they aren't offending your console of choice, don't worry - Take it from me instead, every console had awesome games this year (well, my Wii... auch, I said no console wars, so I ain't going there :p)

@Bri- : I think you're absolutely right. And I heard that the processer is only using 3 of the 5+ cores on the cell on current gen games. Can anyone enlighten me on this subject and actually tell me if its actually true? Because if it is, there definitely is some potential in that machine.

I well suspect this could be true certainly for some games. Remember if I recall the PS3 GUI/OS consumes 2-3 cores iteself and these are permantly reserved for its exclusive use.

The big issue is though games done need raw cpu performance they need graphics card power which is one reason the xbox 360 generally looks as good as the ps3 as the gcard chip is much better in the xbox.

Also a mate who is a games dev says its hard to make games for multicore. Unreal engine 3 helped as it does multicore well and developers need to worry less as the ground work has been done to split the tasks/processes out to each core.

I tbh dont think a *revolution* will come when/if they decide the use the *spare* cores as developers have a hugely hard time programming for the PS3 currently (his words as well as mine) due to sony being terrible at documentation/help for developers. Its one reason the xbox is so popular because MS have a well implemented programming language with lots of support/documentation.

The PS3 sales are doing just fine. They have sold more per year than the 360 and as the 360 is less than half the price, that aint bad going is it.

I beg to differ. MS has

I doubt that as NPD have stated for quite a few months now the PS3 sales are less then the 360 and even still the 360 has sold approx 28million consoles to sonys 16million (and thats including people who only bought it as it was cheap blue ray back in the day)

I did hear the PS3 had terrible sales year on year (for December) though and that it was actually down a few percent so until NPD come out with stats (which I know is only USA) I think its PR spin. I personally know no one that bought a ps3 this Christmas where tons got xbox's as they are so cheap.

You can't gauge the market based on averages. The 360 didn't sell close to 9 mil it's first year on the market. Every year the PS3 has been out, the 360 has sold more, and if it keeps doing that, the PS3 won't catch up.

What else do you think a Sony PR person is going to say?
Ok I'm going to ask again, do you actually offer anything to this community Jeremy? You're probably double the post count since I last asked and still trolling the boards and causing nothing but grief.

Jeremy has a point.

    • Good review, and yeah the benchmark breakdown is pretty clear but also a little messy in a good way. It’s kinda interesting to see where the RX 9070 GRE slides in between the 7800 XT and the 9070 XT , especially when it comes to AI tasks and Blender style workloads. The side by side with Nvidia’s RTX 5070 and 4070 makes it feel obvious just how competitive the mid range GPU scene has gotten lately, and that’s great for creators and gamers too since you can pick based on your priorities rather than only chasing one single thing.
    • That's it. I finally uninstalled Firefox because they often keep pushing buggy updates, only to test them later and make users suffer. No longer is it my alternative browser to Edge. What a waste of energy. Firefox is bad for the environment, just like Chrome (wasting RAM/energy).
