Find the taskbar preview delay!

I've seen many complaints about the time it takes to display the window previews in the new taskbar. Does anyone have an idea where in the registry to look for such a registry key? I have already sent feedback, but I'm still wondering if theres somewhere in the registry that may allow us to change it without needing the next build.

I suppose you could try running a registry monitor and restart Explorer?

I do hope it's configurable (if only with an optional key) in the final version though.

Yes, but the problem is that the keys for many settings in Windows don't actually exist until someone creates them with a custom value, so even if there was such a key for the taskbar (which there is no real reason to assume there is), you wouldn't necessarily find it by just looking through the registry.

Hence the RegMon suggestion.

seems to work just fine. I used 50ms and it seems to pop up super fast.

btw, i use 0 ..i agree 50 is fast enough but 0 gives me a more "smooth" feel to the taskbar.

The memory consumption is increased when this reg hack is performed... so the default value should perhaps be improved by Microsoft before RTM not causing any strain on performance.

You can also still turn the thumbnails off with the standard policy.

This just shows you how many settings are hidden off in the registry still. I know it might not be the best of ideas, but why don't they just show these options in the UI from the get go instead of having you run around in the registry which would be a worse idea.

My question has been answered!

I changed the value to 0 and now the previews pop-up the instance the cursor's tip touches the icon's border. The value of 400 gave approximately 0.5-1.0 second delay. While this might not be long, it's certainly annoying that you've to wait or click on the icon.

What's the harm in making it zero? This is a genuine question.

This should be default, or at least make it an option.

I thought that registry setting might also reduce the time it takes for the Control Panel to fan-out in the Start menu (if you have it configured to do that), but it inexplicably still takes 3 seconds. At least navigating the program groups is faster than in Vista. It's not "MenuShowDelay" in the Desktop section either.

The Taskbar is now much more enjoyable to use with the value set to 0. I have spent about four hours using Windows with the new setting, and it's much smoother. The work flow is now just instant.

Why put an artificial delay in the first place, for something that has to be responsive and fast?

i used 0 but went back to 50.

If you use 0, the sub menus pop instantly, (im talking about the notepad, word, paint menus showing the last files you used, above All programs) limiting you to view any sub menu if you over above them trying to reach the top option, with 50 you can skip those.
