Remove Windows Media Player Context Menu Items in Windows 7

How to?

On earlier versions of Windows it was just enough running the command "regsvr32 /u wmpshell.dll" from the "Run" dialog box, but this doesn't work in Windows 7.

Neither does the removal of 3 keys in the registry (as in earlier versions of Windows).

Anyone out there having a clue on this?

I want to remove these context menu items when right-clicking a media file:

- Add to Windows Media Player Player list

- Play with Windows Media Player

The Windows Media Player team moved away from DllRegisterServer (called by regsvr32) in the Windows Vista timeframe. If you're still using it on Windows 7, you're probably confused about what you're trying to do. It would *generally* not be expected to work right. There's one notable exception, but that's not relevant here.

Go to the Default Programs control panel and choose to Hide access to WMP. That'll pull the context menu handlers.

Is that what you're looking for here? What application are you using as your default? I'm curious why these are still showing up for you.

Where is this option? I went to Default Programs, but I cannot find anywhere the option to hide WMP...
