In Windows 7 Build 7000 and 7022 when you click on the start menu then All programs why does the last program folder at the bottom of the list disappear and leave a little space between that line right above the Back button?

I don't like this because sometimes when I open all programs and my mouse is over the blank space the scroll wheel on my mouse does not move the scroll bar until I have my mouse over the closest program folder.

It did not do this in Windows Vista and was better for it.

To test make sure you have enough things in your All programs menu. And leave the scrollbar at the top. Then open All programs and watch how the last program folder show for like a second then closes causing the blank space.

I hope Microsoft can just make this little change so it does not do that anymore.

Is this by design or is it a bug?

Video of the bug!

remember its beta, it doest do this on my copy of windows 7 could easily be graphics drivers causing this problem,

betas have bugs wait till general release then all will be good

O I understand Beta have there issues :) And I guess it could be a video driver issue but I don't think it is.

Just to be clear you said you do not have this issue. Are you sure you understand what I am talking about?

Definitely must be a bug but i just couldn't reproduce this on my side

Is your All Programs full and when you click on All Programs is the scrollbar at the top? Because this is when I see it.

Can you check please?

You should see one of your program folders Apear then disappear very fast.

Its not a huge deal but I just don't remember this happening in Windows Vista.

I would take a video of what is happening but the program I use Snapit cause a "com surrogate" error when recording a video.

Use inbuilt problem steps recorder in Windows 7 and upload the file in here...

I see it on the beta build. The very edge of the last item appears for an instant and then get displaced by the separator. Looks like a tiny bug/glitch that it is showing there are at all, the separator should show up at the same time as the list (or at least the last item should never draw). It may only show up in specific layouts or something.

Don't know if it's been fixed in later builds, I'll watch for it though.

Cool I new I could not be the only one seeing this :)

I know its not a huge bug or anything. But like you said it looks to be a glitch of some kind and I wonder if Microsoft knows about it?

well what build are you running on your laptop? :ninja:

oh btw brandon windows 7 is awesome if I haven't said before. an issue which I had in vista that still seems to exist in 7 is that explorer creates thumbnails for files such as pdf, doc and ppt at first and then just stops doing it after a while. is it some kind of ifilter issue? on 7 32bit btw.

Hmm... have you reported this through any of the official feedback channels? It wouldn't be IFilters, those don't have anything to do with thumbnails. However, thumbnails are generated by thumbnail handlers that are usually installed by the application that supports that file type. Also I assume you're referring to the real thumbnail images (and not icons), which actually show a preview of the document. For most Office documents, thumbnails aren't actually enabled by default, and they need to be enabled in the Save As dialog. I assume they're off by default because they make the file larger. At least I know that's true for Word docs (I think PowerPoint saves thumbnails out by default).

PDFs I'm not sure about, I'm guessing Adobe or whateve reader program you use is generating those. Do you have any problem with image file types? If so, it could be a problem with the thumbnail cache.

So your running a newer build then 7022?

Also you say you don't have this issue on your PC are you sure you tested it the right way?

Hmmmm I see you are from From Redmond, WA Home of Microsoft :)

Brandon could you check if the isssue here https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=724530 also got fixed in your build of Winodws 7?

Ok I have installed Windows 7 Build 7048.

And I still have this bug! :(

Just too add to this topic.

When you click on All Programs it looks like the text flickers or something.

No question about it this is some kind of bug/glitch.

Just compare it to Windows Vista and you will see that Windows 7 has a glitch when clicking on All Programs under the start menu.

Ok I have installed Windows 7 Build 7057.

And I still have this bug! :(

In every build of Windows 7 including 7057 when you click on All Programs you can see the last program folder peek for a second then disappear.

Again this does not happen at all in Vista.

I hope Microsoft plans to fix this before final come out!

    • If only Windows would have a toggle switch named "Get the latest updates as soon as possible" inside Windows Update settings... But nah, let's hide the new stuff inside a controlled feature rollout, even if the user is explicitly asking for the new stuff as soon as possible.
    • After watching the Apple event earlier this week it is quite the contrast. Apple is going back and tweaking the code to make things more efficient in many areas of MacOS. Windows is boosting your electric build to hide their issues.
    • It is silly there is no simple way to check whether this profile has been activated. CFRs are normal, but trying to even hide the fact if it's on / off seems silly, especially for something so user-facing. Surely Microsoft is "proud" of their engineering efforts on this one and ought to display it somwhere in the GUI.
    • Many Linux distros are not known for excellent battery life, so I'm not sure that is the best example. A more apt example may be Apple, but Apple's CPUs are simply far more efficient than Intel & AMD at single-threaded tasks like these, so "boosting" is not as power-hungry and less heat-inducing. Not to mention Apple will hardly engage P-cores for basic UI tasks; they use a pretty complicated QoS scheme to only activate P-cores for more serious workloads like HTML / JS execution or decompression or application launch. Microsoft is (smartly) doing it for launch, but also for UI tasks, which is the more nonsensical part: why ... do Windows 11's UIs need modern CPUs to boost? It should load so quickly that there's not even time for the CPU to boost.
    • I've not seen any controlled testing and, judging by Microsoft's mentality, within a year, they'll have added so much more bloat, it'll undo any perceptible latency benefit and we'll have boosted the CPU clocks for nothing.
