What have they changed with the Windows Experience Index from build 7000 and 7048. I was recieving a WEI of 5.7 before, because of the Primary Hard Disk, but now in 7048 this has gone down to 2.9, which seems a mistake. I have quite a High End machine I built myself so this number is a little upsetting :)

I guess WEI is still bugged in 7048.

Try re-running the assessment again. I did get 2.9 too once for unknown reason but i re-run the assessment got 4.2 which is what i usually get.

I did run it twice to make sure, but, When I am done trying to reset all the permissions on my data drives I will give it another go. I hadn't realised all the permissions problems Windows 7 had been bringing up. I have had these drives since I installed Vista, and before that some of the files and folders I have were created back in Windows 2000 and with XP.

Some of the files are owned by usernames with random digits, and so I am trying to put the ownership and permissions to System for all these files and folders lol.

Mac has a repair permissions option, but Windows 7 has no such thing...

That WEI disk score bug is for me since build 6936, turn off write-back cache on HD and run assesement.

This will make WEI score higher (MS promised to fix this so you won't get higher result just by disabling it - apparently it's not done yet) but it will also degrade system performance.

IMO WEI works as Microsoft wanted, we discussed this some time ago - it has some HDD assessments that current disks don't pass properly. This has to do with disk firmware and the way it handles cache operations (especially random I/O operations + cache flushes). I just don't know what should I buy in the future to satisfy WEI :) Microsoft should talk to hardware vendors and tell them what the problem exactly is.

i turn it back on after ;) i turn it off just for assement, because i hate to see score 2.9 when i can score 5.9 :)

Is it illegal to use leaked beta builds ?

As no one has ever been arrested or taken to court and tried, or sentenced to jail or even prison (or even community service) for running some beta software they "acquired" I don't think it's relevant at this point.

As for illegal, not one person here can say yes or no, primarily because of what I just stated above: such an occurrence has never been tested in a court of law anywhere on the planet that I'm aware of.

It's illegal in most places to drive 26 in a 25 MPH zone, but it sure as hell doesn't actually do anything to stop people from doing it... right?

 I didn't know anything about the legal - illegal things using a beta.

This was the main reason of my question.

That is a weird bug...

EDIT: Also it seems Windows 7 now works with FTP folders again. Build 7000 didnt allow exploring of FTPs through Windows Explorer, but now in 7048 it is back!

Glad, it worked for you mate.

Is it illegal to use leaked beta builds ?

Yes. It is software piracy (copyright violation to be more exact), and that has certainly been tested in court before.

It is just as illegal as downloading a pirate copy of Vista or the latest game.

The actual risk of getting caught is close to zero, but it's not legal.

Agree, because on the MS Connect page I notice it says I agree NOT to distribute the downloads, so the

leaking out is violating the contract, and thenceforth made any people using this download material a (can't remember the word  ).

But also agree the risk.... is close to zero.

I still fail to understand what all this commotion is about for a lame score. I have yet to see any significant purpose for which these scores are used other than saying "my score is higher than yours."

Agree with this assessment as well. The chances of getting caught for downloading and using 7048 is 0% (unlike downloading a retail copy of a game where it is <0.0000001% or something close to that), because MS will take this opportunity to get last minute feedback before they push the RC next month. Who knows, this is probably what they were banking on by releasing this "beta refresh" so they do not have to pay for download bandwidth costs had they released this as beta 2 instead.

I really wouldn't worry too much about the WEI. It rates my graphics card (Intel GMA 950) as just a 3.5, and yet has no trouble with Aero Glass or anything else I've thrown at it. The way the ratings are calculated is still a bit mysterious, so I pretty much take it with a grain of salt.

After all, if you can already clearly run Windows 7, why worry what some numerical rating system says?

Is it illegal to use leaked beta builds ?

Technically, yes, it is, but don't worry. Microsoft isn't going to send the US Marshals after you, and Bill Gates won't kill you in your sleep.

Yeah i've never gotten over 5.7 on my HDD.

My score is a 4.8 ATM because my GFX and CPU are average.

Well holy crap.. Still got some Active Directory issues and I cant get our networked Kyocera printer drivers to work but just finished installing Adobe CS3, and Acrobat 8.0 (not 8.1) installed its PDF printer finally under x64!

This has NEVER worked even under Vista unless you have a later version of the Acrobat installer (and even then Adobe's 'fixes' dont ever work for repairing the install for me).

Worked like a charm this morning! I still had to direct it to the AMD64 folder and tell it to use the proper ADOBEPDF.DLL during the install, but this time it actually installed after I clicked it!!

Having some issues using Remote Desktop Connection to connect to an older Win 2000 Server (our ADC).

Works fine on an older XP machine (and worked fine under build 7000) but they did something to this new version of RDC that doesnt like connecting to legacy servers..

Anyone run into this yet? If I have anything selected other than LAN on the Experience options, it wont even show me the nice blue background on the desktop. Just dropped it to Broadband to see if that might turn off some display options hanging me up and RDC just crashed completely heh.

Well ....

Thanks, good to know. Hopefully these will be addressed in the RC. :)

    • WordArt was cool. We now have color fonts as a substitute although Word only supports COLRv0 and COLRv1 (Fraud OS 11 only). The OpenType SVG color font format needs to be supported by Office. Adobe's apps support it
