7048 build of IE8 is good, best from all builds.
Best IE version yet. But still light years behind Firefox and Chrome.

Really? Wow... It crashes on so many web pages unless I load them in compat view (Engadget, ISS, all of Long's Taskforce sites, etc.)

Other pages have ridiculous rendering issues too.

For all the websites you mentioned, I am getting "Done, with errors" on the status bar the bottom after the page loads in a reasonably fast time, and this is without compat mode or any of the crashes you mentioned. Probably might be something else you have installed/running that might be interfering with it.

Has anyone experienced the "HomeGroup Listener" crashing on them at random times and disabling Aero? I check the themes and it still shows the Aero theme checked and when I choose a different one it won't change. So far by turning off the current homegroup connection, it hasn't done it. This is on the machine in my sig using the drivers from HP's website.

No but just disable the service so it won't take down the svchost that DWM's in.

Speaking of HomeGroup, I could never get it to work properly in the 7000 beta. Both a laptop and a desktop machine were insistant that there wasnt already a HomeGroup on my network, and offered that it create one for me. Seemed kind of useless so I just ignored it, nothing wrong with normal network share browsing and using Windows Media Connect or whatever.

Has it changed much since 7000? Could it possibly work for me now?

I turned it off and I'm on 7048 as we speak. It is working fine now. Another thing I noticed is the Bluetooth icon now has a little ? next to it. Also this build has 4 SKUs loaded into it. I used vLite to make a bootable DVD not touching anything and it showed me WINDOWS 7 ULTIMATE, WINDOWS 7 HOMEPREMIUM, WINDOWS 7 PROFESSIONAL, and WINDOWS 7 HOMEBASICN. Proves to me they already slipped them in but locked it in to the install.wim file unless you hack it. It installs Ultimate by default.

Or delete ei.cfg from the sources directory.

How come a 7048 still has Home Basic??:oo

Would love a 32-bit version soon.

Don't blame me for having a 8 year old computer that can't run 64-bit or my other that has a VM that can't virtualize 64-bit!

Would love 32-bit too :/

Have Atom 270 :(

Cuz there will be a Windows 7 Home Basic, but will only be available in developing markets.

That's Windows 7 'Starter', remember, these aren't final, but Microsoft have confirmed that Windows 7 Home Basic has been scrapped.

No, there will also be a Home Basic. Microsoft never said Home Basic was scrapped. It might be for countries like the US, Canada, most of Europe, etc, but it's gonna be around regardless.

That last one for the Copy and Move addition is a huge thing. The "Send to..." has never quite lived up to what it could be, even with mods and adjustments. I just did this myself and it's absolutely welcome, for certain. Thanks for sharing the info...

For those waiting for the x86 release of 7048, pay attention. I asked DiamondNRG, the person responsible for leaking the x64 version when he plans to release the x86 version. This is his reply this morning (Fri. Mar.6th 2009 at 7:15 AM CST):

"I DO NOT HAVE IT YET AND WHEN I DO I WILL SHARE IT. That is all there is to it man, have a nice day."

Now, other folks claim to have the x86 flavor but as far as I know, no one has leaked it to date. So, learn to deal with it. Sorry.

I've asked him too, and he told me:

"Yeah, I don't have it *yet*."

That was a few days ago.

    • Ford execs say they made a mistake when they replaced human engineers with AI by David Uzondu Ford recently announced that over the last three years, it's had to rehire about 350 "gray beard" engineers to mentor younger staff and reprogram diagnostic systems and AI tools that were failing to meet up to quality expectations. The company's VP of vehicle hardware engineering, Charles **** said that leaders overlooked the deep experience of veterans who survived many product cycles. **** admitted that simply replacing them with AI was a huge mistake, and that while AI is "a fantastic tool," it remains "only as good as the information you use to train it." The rehired engineers now run mandatory meetings to troubleshoot vehicles and reprogram automated engineering software and AI tools to prevent glitches before production. These technical specialists hunt for failure points before parts ever reach the plant floor, helping prevent the massive recalls and defects that previously cost the company billions as it aims to cut one billion dollars in expenses this year. In last year's JD Power Quality Survey, an annual study that measures the quality of a car during the first three months of ownership, Ford finished 10th among mainstream brands and scored below the industry average. But this year, JD Power ranked the automaker as the top mainstream brand, placing it above the likes of Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. Ford attributed this massive improvement directly to the expertise of these returned engineers. Ford's realization that AI cannot magically design and test quality vehicles without senior human oversight is just the tip of the iceberg. When Careerminds looked at companies that conducted AI-driven layoffs, researchers found out that 35.6% of those companies had to rehire more than half of the employees they previously fired. Another 32.7% had to rehire between 25% and 50% of them. In 2024, Sebastian Siemiatkowski, CEO of Klarna, proudly announced that its new chatbot was doing the work of 700 full-time customer service agents. As a result, the fintech company froze hiring and cut hundreds of positions. But by mid 2025, and into 2026, Klarna was scrambling to recruit human agents again because customer satisfaction had plummeted. It turns out, while AI is very good at answering basic questions like how to check an account balance, when faced with complex customer issues that require nuance, the thing usually resorts to the unhelpful, robotic corporate jargon we all know and love.
    • Free AI in IDEs is shifting to paid models Or you know, you could just learn to actually design and code apps, use frameworks to handle the repetitive parts and not use AI at all - and voila... free for life!
