Neowin No Ad Version

Recommended Posts

The only ads that annoy me in any way at all are the pop up ons on the main page.

But other than that, I barely notice any of the others anyway.

Though any sort of higher paid subscriber badge would would only be taken into consideration by me dependant on the colour of the badge provided. :p

We have a pink badge lying around we've wanted to use for something. That intrigue you?

Are our ads that obtrusive?

The money you pay for a subscription goes towards better features for you and supports the site.. It is purposely very low to subscribe but it in no way covers for the ad revenue on an annual basis!

As mentioned earlier, I don't like ADs. Especially with Neowin having them embedded in the text which has constantly made me wonder if I should leave the site. I'm not asking them to do this for free (I understand it costs money to run a site) and I don't really want to resort to robbing them (using an AD Blocker). I'm willing to PAY a reasonble rate to get rid of the ADs. Allowing me to support one of my top websites and to not have ADs.

Then the staff at Neowin can get a real measure of their value, the number of paid subscribers. IMHO AD support as a primary driving force for a site devalues it in a number of ways. It not only distorts the number of people who value the site it also (can) devalue the site's content in a hope to garner more page views (as higher page views translate into higher ad revenue) at the expense of long term subscribers...

At any rate, this isn't an attempt to ask for anything free. I'm just making a valid suggestion to Neowin and allowing others to share their support (or lack thereof) for the admins to take it all into account.

I read it and im replying :p

I dont thing the ad's are obtrusive... if you let them dictate weather you go on a site or not, then you ahve issues.

Not at all. I don't even notice it, 99% of the time.

Yea I understand that. $13USD per year isn't much to cover ad revenue, and I realistically don't expect it to. I pay over $100 per year for access to WSJ.com to remove ads (though that is another story). So I'm wondering about another subscription level where no ads is a feature. Maybe the discussion could be pointed toward how much (roughly) revenue Neowin gets per sit visitor annually from ADs. That way we would talk about a realistic price to someone who wants to forgoe those ADs without destroying Neowin revenue.

Also, for me any ad is obtrusive. Especially with the latest news article being that Google will soon use them to track my web viewing intensely. I'm big on privacy and I'm sure I'll end up installing an Ad Blocker as a result. But I would prefer to NOT steal from one of my favorite sites.

How would I have issues? You choose where you go, be it online or in the birck and mortar world, based on a variety of factors. If you walkd into your favorite movie theater and it had the greatest seats and the best sound and picture quality in the area, but all through the movie some guy would sit next to you trying to sell you something I'm sure you'd stop going too. You'd probably also tell management to, at least, offer a VIP section where the tickets cost more, but those guys aren't allowed... Any reason I have to choosing where to visit or not visit is a valid reason simply because those are my reasons. They might not be the same for you, but that is the way it should be as we're not the same person.

What a horrible badge! I mean, there's no olive green in it or anything...

Totally understandable, I believe and know Green to be the best colour around.

Apparently friends think its an obsession, I just think its an awesome colour for everything. :p

IIRC, Neowin gets paid on a page load basis, so even if you don't click any they'll get some $$$.

Totally agree though, the intellitext and flash ones are beyond annoying. I can only really stand the google ads as they blend nicely with the website. Anything more and they're all gone.

Well since this thread has failed to start any reasonable discussion I guess I'll just resort to doing what every other person who dislikes ADs has resorted to doing. If Neowin decides to do an AD-Free subscriber level I'll consider it :D

That's not very nice, if you plan on doing what I think your going to do.

Honestly dude, the ads are so small and hardly noticeable they do not bother me one bit. Blocking or removing the advertisements using a third party program doesn't help change the overall look and could possibly break some of the code on the web site, causing errors and making things look distorted.

What if he uses a browser with ad blocking built in? Camino has an option to block web ads. It wouldn't be third party then. :shiftyninja:

In cases like that, there will definitely be ways you can whitelist sites. If you would like Neowin to be able to stay running, we appreciate if you whitelist us. After all, it will benefit you because Neowin needs the revenue that adverts generate to stay up and running.

Just kidding :D Green is a very nice colour though :)

That is not my desire, but by and large I have been told that is what I should do. I asked to pay for no ads and got met largely with two replies.

1. The ads are not annoying (so i am now told what annoys me)

2. Use ad blocking software.

Very few have chimed in support or other positive thoughts. The only admin to reply essentially reiterated the first line.

So it seems I am being told the suggestion is pointless. I can spend my money elsewhere.

Frazell, nobody has said Neowin will never have an ad-free option. I just thought I'd point that out :)

Your suggestion is very valid. A lot of members seem to desire to pay for the removal of adverts. Like I said - no one has said it will never happen (likewise, no one has said it will happen).

Thank you for not blocking the adverts and for being mature about this issue, discussing it with the community.

What is it about Neowin's adverts that you find obtrusive?

Edited by Calum

Well the intellitxt ads are the worst. I don't mind the other ads so much, I hate the intellitxt with a passion though. I've taken the step of adding their domain to my hosts list routed to home. No longer an issue. I'd gladly pay more for an ads free version of Neowin though

His point is not that the ads are obtrusive (they're not). His point is that if there were an ad-free Neowin available in combination with a more expensive type of subscription, he'd buy that.

The administration was thinking out loud about it once, I remember as much.

Thank you for your point, Mephistopheles; whilst I already understand completely what Frazell Thomas' point is, he has also stated that he finds the adverts obtrusive. I am just interested to know what about Neowin's adverts he finds obtrusive? :)

Less than a week ago, Mozilla fixed crashes on Intel Raptor Lake processors with version 152.0.1. Now, Mozilla has prepared yet another set of fixes that address problems with localization, playback issues of certain MP4 files, and performance issues on website that perform various encryption operations at once. Here is the full changelog: Firefox 152.0.2 is now available for download from Mozilla's FTP. Existing installations will get the update over the next several hours. The latest version will also be available soon on the official website, the Microsoft Store, and Neowin's Software page. You can find Firefox 152.0.2 release notes in the official documentation. In case you missed it, Mozilla released Firefox 152 earlier this month. The latest feature update brought reworked settings with a more streamlined user interface, JPEG XL support, new features for Private mode, a new way to mute a tab (just type "mute" in the address bar), and many more. You can find the complete changelog here. In other Firefox news, Mozilla recently published its roadmap, where the company detailed the upcoming Nova redesign and other features it plans to implement. Mozilla wants to make the new user interface easier to navigate and more modern, with a heavy focus on its privacy tools, such as its built-in VPN. If you are curious, you can already enable the new UI as described here.

    • I wonder how many are laid off for cost savings, and this being blamed on AI to make it sound less scary and bad, for a more positive "modern, with the times" spin for investors? Because Oracle is down 14% the past year. We're looking at a company struggling here. If AI would actually be working out so well for them that they can do massive layoffs, surely this would've been reflected the past year in their stock value?
