One of the BEST antivirus software that I have used.

I was hoping that the ad's in the free version will be removed but it did not :(.

I switched from AVG Free to this after hearing all the great reviews about it. So far so good.

I've been using Avira on Windows 7 b7000 and 7057 without any problems. I've also upgraded to this version which is somewhat faster. I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Just installed it on build 7057 x86. Seems to run great except for the huge Upgrade to Avira Premium popup when I updated lol. Anyway to stop that from happening?

You need to prevent avnotify.exe from starting. You could just rename the file or:

go to Local Security Policy > Software Restriction Policies > Additional Rules and set up a new hash rule for the avnotify.exe process

It's the heuristics of Antivir.

How well does the free version protect your computer?

It's about as good as NoD and Kaspersky for viruses, not sure how it handles spyware and malicious scripts. The biggest drawback is that it gives more false positives than some other AVs.

Avira has scored slightly higher detection rates in tests recently and is said to have lower resource usage, although I only notice a minimal if any difference in system speed when using Avira instead of Avast.

Avira 9s interface changes have been minimal - there's some screenshots here.

The biggest changes for me are the added Adware and Spyware detection, and the scanner doesn't stop each time it detects something now - it reports them all at the end and asks you what you want to do - at last! It always used to annoy me when I'd leave a scan running overnight to find it had stopped only a short way in because it thought it had found something.

Thanks for posting that! Does Avira have an audible virus alert when a virus is found? Also, is there an audible alert when it updates? I like being able to hear that my virus definitions have been updated. I also like hearing I have a virus, but only cause I'm secure that Avast will get rid of it.

i use the manual update on v8 but it doesn't update to v9. Must i manually download and install?

It hasn't told me to restart a single time since installation a week ago. I'm running Vista SP1. Are you guys still using XP?
