Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Film)

Recommended Posts

I'm going on Monday, but I'm not expecting much - I haven't liked any of the films, except Prisoner of Azkaban, which I liked as a film, but HATED as an adaptation. Since then, I've realised that even if they get brilliant directors [which Yates most definitely isn't], they're still at the Mercy of Steve Kloves, whose adaptations have generally been awful.

Oh, and I'll be 'completing the journey', in 2D.

Just got back from the screening. The movie was good, but the ending was as I feared. The climax of the movie was almost entirely different than the book, and it completely ruined it. The rest of the movie did a great job of stuffing details from the book into the the plot, but the ending just sucked.

Do you really think they should have kept the book's version of

the final duel

? it would have been so anticlimatic. Those who haven't read the book would be furious.

I don't think Harry's speech followed by each casting their signature spell would be anticlimatic.

I havent read the book in a long time, but if I recall correctly,

harry explained to voldermort why he couldn't master the elder wand?

And I think that they should've actually SAID the spellls. the whole avada kedavra vs. expelliarmus is special in both the books and earlier moves (they kept it on GoF). also I wished you saw molly say it as well

I did NOT like the next to last scene with the Elder Wand. They should have kept it the same

Obviously at a midnight showing theres alot of fans. I could hear just peoples reactions to that scene and knew instantly that it must have been different from the book. I myself have not read the books. I should...

I went with some friends that hadn't read the book, and I told them what actually happened to

the elder wand

in the books and they were like: well that makes a lot more sense!

But meh, the purpose was the same anyway

did they change the ending? i don't remember the ending like that in the book especially voldemort and nagina specially as well as Nevill's final action in the movie

they re-arranged things a bit. neville's sword thingy was supposed to happen earlier and not like that. in the book, neville kills the snake while harry is still presumed dead (but is casting spells behind the invisibility cloak I think). then voldemort is fought by minerva, slughorn and shacklebolt, while ron, hermione and ginny are fighting off bellatrix (until molly steps in). at some point harry shows himself, gives volvemort a speech on where he failed and they cast 'expelliarmus' and 'aveda kedavra' at the same time.

WTF is going on with this thread? There should be a TON of spoiler tags that no one is using!!!

I have not read the books, but I enjoy the movies and planned on going to see it tomorrow for a matinee, and thanks for no one using spoiler tags the movie was possibly ruined for me.

Thanks alot.

I've added spoiler tags to most of the recent posts in this thread. In the future, please use them when you mention details about the movie or book.

If you're unaware of the spoiler tags, use this as a reference:

So why couldn't voldermort master the elder wand?

So why couldn't voldermort master the elder wand?

Draco mastered Dumbledor (6th book) and then later Harry mastered Draco (7th book part 1). Voldemort tough that to be the master of the wand you had to kill the person who owns it. But you only need to master/disarm like Draco did against Dumbledor. Snape killed him but did not disarm him.

Voldemort would need to disarm Harry in order to master the wand. He killed Snape instead.

To be fair, why would you come in this thread if you knew they were talking about the movie?

Nothing said ruined the movie, just comparing the differences between the book and movie. Just don't go visit IMBD's website...

The only plot hole is that he did kill harry.

To be fair, ????

 Seriously, are you kidding me with that question?

Let me spell it out for you as simply as possible.

I came into the thread for the same exact reason I go into any threads about any other form of media, such as video games for example, that I am looking forward to. I expect to read news, maybe see some screens, start see reviews coming it, and then once it has been released get GENERAL impressions.

So to be fair, to say I should not have come into this thread is literally when of the stupidest things I have ever read on this site, and I have read a whole lot of stupid things said.

And I beg to differ, I know nothing of the books, so to speak about major plot aspects of the books indeed can and very well may have ruined the movie for me.

Do you really think they should have kept the book's version of

the final duel

? it would have been so anticlimatic. Those who haven't read the book would be furious.

The movie cut out or down-played HUGE plot points from the Hogwarts battle.

The deaths of Fred, Lupin, and Tonks weren't given any screen time and they were just kind of passed over in less than a minute. The attack of the House Elves, lead by Kreacher against Voldemort was completely left out. Neville's badass scene that completes his character's arc in a supremely awesome way (where, in front of everyone, he stands up to Voldemort, gets tortured, and STILL kills Nagini) was changed for the worse. The entire scene about the fate of the Elder wand after Voldemort's death was completely changed, and completely ruined the meaning of it.

In the book the final duel between Harry and Voldemort happens in front of everyone in the Great Hall. The Death Eaters are being overrun or driven out of the castle, but everyone stops to watch the duel. Intensely silent. Voldemort and Harry circle each other. With wands drawn and staring each other down, they have an intense conversation as to why none of Voldemort's spells can hurt anyone. How Harry's sacrifice earlier in the forest permanently protects everyone from Voldemort. How he STILL doesn't understand why those who know love will always be more powerful than he. Voldemort's disposition goes from confident to angry and scared as he finally realizes. They both cast their signature spells and Voldemort is killed by his own, rebounding spell. Everyone sees his death. And in that moment there is a huge uproar of happiness and excitement.

In the movie, some of the things mentioned above are correct. But, on the whole, the movie completely missed what made all of those scenes great. You asked if the book version would have been anticlimactic, and I say that the book's ending was far and away the better of the two.

Sorry Larry. I intentionally left my post vague on the specifics for that very reason. I apologize if it still ruined it for you.

I don't think it's that stupid. You should know most people don't know about spoiler tags. You don't want the movie spoiled then you shouldn't be looking for info before you watch it. :pinch: What do you think people are going to be talking about after the release?

Voldemort did not kill Harry. Voldemort killed the piece of his own soul that was attached to Harry.

Again, reviews from critics, and other members GENERAL impressions. liked it, hated it, effects were awesome, it was way to long, way to short, etc. etc. etc. Screen shots. The same things that are discussed in countless other threads about movies and video games that have never ruined a movie for me or anyone else in the past, but now all of a sudden this is some new foreign concept and I am the idiot for being in the thread???

Whatever, I am done with this thread. Especially if the people participating in it find it SO damn confusing why spoiler tags have always been used on this site and cannot grasp the fact why I came into the thread if I have not seen the movie yet.

spacer... thank you for the info. Now I know what to expect. I was really hoping they would stick to the books more but I guess not. Oh well

DirtyLarry, well in my case, If I don't want to be spoiled I avoid talking or reading anything about it. You never know who's going to spoil it for you!
