1. Disable suggested sites. (Tools Menu -> Suggested Sites)

2. You're done. Really, that was scary. IE8 is now even faster and more responsive than Chrome (FF and Saf4 are way behind) and pending account info transfer, going to be my main browser *coughcoughcough*

Optionally, you can shave off (what I deem negligible) time by making the tabs open a blank page instead of the new tab page.

Seriously, sloppy MS QA at work? Suggested sites slow the browser down A LOT.

Edit: After disabling and re-enabling Suggested Sites, IE 8 remained snappy. Looks like this one went over QA's heads.

Hi

Try this tweak also, read more about it here: http://blogs.zdnet.com/Bott/?p=754

From a Command Prompt window, run the following command:

regsvr32 actxprxy.dll

That re-registers the ActiveX Interface Marshaling Library, an obscure DLL that most people (even Microsoft experts) had never heard about. (Update: 27-Mar: Note that if you try this using Windows Vista, you must do this from an elevated Command Prompt window; type cmd in the Start menu Search box, right-click the Cmd.exe shortcut, and then choose Run As Administrator. For detailed instructions with screen shots, see this post.) After restarting her computer, she tried using IE8 again. The results were stunning:

Thanks Luke for the additional tip!

I'm *assuming* that Suggested Sites toggled triggers it, but it could be something different. The delay happened to me on a friend's PC with V64 when I was at his place, so I'll find some time to tweak on his, too.

There must be multiple reasons for delayed tabs since the other thread suggested removing some Spybot related registry keys (which I never installed), and you're suggested disabling suggested sites (which isn't on). :s

I've also tried disabling (not uninstalling) Kaspersky to no effect.

Yeah, I have the delay problem when opening a new tab. I've played around with it and determined that my problem is the Spybot immunize feature and Spyware Blaster. IE locks up for 7-8 seconds whenever I first open it or open a new tab. If I disable the Spybot immunize AND Spyware Blaster, this problem goes away. But, I use Firefox, so I'll stick with my spyware prevention.

Also, to the OP: I'm currently running Firefox 3.5b4, and I must say that it certainly is not *way* behind. There's really no noticeable speed difference for me between the two browsers, and I have a bunch of extensions installed on Firefox.

No, that's just junk.

Don't know what's going on with your FF, but my tabs load instantly.. :s

What I'd love to see figured out, is how to stop a new tab gaining focus when you click on a link, instead of having to right-click and choose to open a new tab in the background, it should do that by default but does not.

Try running IE 8 with Add-ons disabled by going to the Start Menu and then All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No Add-ons). Also check out this post from the IE 8 blog team about solving this problem - http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2009/07/1...abs-faster.aspx

Java plugin it is. Thanks for the tip. (Y)

Just as a little note here, I've found that as long as I run IE in private mode, then it's very snappy and responsive. Which doesn't bother me since all I use IE for is meebo.

When running in untweaked, non-private mode, I do notice lag when opening new links/tabs.

    • That's just silly imo. The lengths that man goes to just to avoid W11 is just nuts. Very, very few home users would do that. I will say this though, he is committed. Btw, I note on askwoody that Woody Leonhard passed away March, 2025 aged 73. His site was one of my favorites back in the day. Belated yes but RIP Woody.
    • Because of the EU (a good thing) newer android devices been getting 5 years worth of security patches. Except some Motorola which found the loop hole, and offer ZERO updates. In addition, Google for years have been making where it can patch some stuff by updating the core Google Play Store itself.  As echoed earlier,  you take the security risk in to your own hand beyond supported.
