ATI HD Radeon 4890 (RV790) & NVIDIA GeForce GTX 275 (GT200b) Reviewed

My mistake. Title fixed, thanks.

If anyone has any other reviews they'd like to post feel free to do so.

The 4890 has AMAZING overclocking ability though from what I can see in the reviews. :|

Bah... a nice optimisation, but nothing very interesting. They still can't crush Crysis or even Far Cry 2. I know I'm not upgrading before the HD 5800.

Who plays Crysis anymore? That's a game you play once and that's it.

Far Cry 2 is a long and very boring and repetitive game.

Way to miss my point. I was obviously referring to them as good examples of current graphical technology, not of the most fun games to play.
Is it smart to buy the 4890 over the 4870 for the price difference?

Depends what your budget is. An HD 4870 1GB @ NCIX.com is about $270 where an HD 4890 1GB is about $300-320.

$50 difference is quite a bit of dough.

4890 on newegg is $260 though compared to the 4870 which is $220. I can afford the 4890 no problem but I'm just wondering if the gains are worth the extra dough.

I guess it would be worth it. Performance gains SEEM to be significant enough and there is increased overclocking ability as well.

If you already have a 1GB HD 4870 though I would just stick with that.

I'm on a 2600 lol

This upgrade should more than enough for my needs, it's one luxury item I'd like to equip my new build with.

Go for it. The HD 4890 seems to perform quite well in games like GTA IV and Far Cry 2. For some games, it's worse than the GTX 275 whereas in other games it's better than the GTX 285. It's odd!

I'd prob just play 3 or 4 games like Fallout 3, Mass Effect, Left 4 Dead, and Sins of a Solar Empire, that thing should fly even if it's slower by a few frames.

    • This is about the already discredited 2025 announcement. Not the current one, which I've heard nothing negative about in the academic literature.
    • So, for $60 we got GTA 5 WITH online. Now for $80, we get a game missing areas (shops locked to the $100 version) and no online. Progress!
