If torture is a harsh word: well, imagine being forced to live in one room full of your own faecal matter and urine, which builds up everyday and gives off toxic gases that burn your eyes and lungs.

not quite how it affects them. Ammonia and to a lesser (but still deadly in larger doses) nitrite bond to their blood cells, making those cells unable to absorb oxygen. This effectively drowns them (ya, the irony)
