Mac OS X Market share, falling?

Recommended Posts

They actually INCREASED the prices of most of their computers recently

False. The Aluminum MacBook doesn't represent "most of their computers" aka "most of their lines" (yes I know they sell a whole lot more MacBooks than anything else) and it's pretty much the only one who had a price bump.

And the white MacBook dropped like 200 or 300, meaning it didn't increase, on the contrary.

The Canadian dollar is falling so they had to readjust the prices of the newest lines with that... and they still didn't INCREASE here. It stayed the same.

I agree though that the prices should have lowered, they're not helping the economic crisis, but saying they increased them, is bad faith.

Yeh just keep dreaming la la la everyone else is wrong.

3%, 1%, who cares? Macs still work, PC's still work, everyone chooses to buy what they like.

And it's true what he said, it does look like you just posted this to see if you could stir up some trouble.

Completely agree. All this bashing by both sides is extremely annoying. So what if someone chooses to buy a different computer than you. How in any way does it affect you?

Hopefully, one company or the other, get so scared from everyone buying the competing product, that they try even harder to make better products. .

I would think apples market share would decline in todays economy due to pc's having cheaper prices then apple computers. Once the economy comes back then i excpect them to gain market share again.

That's sort of what I was thinking too.

i do not think the market share should matter it should matter more what computers are being USED more because i know a few people that have purchased cheap windows based netbooks and they just sit around and they are not using them for anything unless they go on a trip or something and then even then they are not using the computes that much anyway.

Apple will never have a large market share while the majority of people can buy, and prefer to buy, cheaper PCs.

I'm not sure why anyone cares about marketshare. What does it mean exactly? Just sounds like a popularity contest to me; arbitrary and inconsequential to the average user. The only important thing is that the pressure of competition keeps companies working hard to produce good products with good support and software options.

As for this statistic:

Stats are based on aggregate data collected by StatCounter on a sample exceeding 4 billion pageviews per month collected from across the StatCounter network of more than 3 million websites.

It's an interesting guide but is clearly not an accurate figure. It doesn't take into account users who are not online, for example, and there is no way of telling what bias is present on the websites included (for example being all North American focused, as someone said, or commercial shopping, or blogs, whatever).

It really bugs me when people claim that statistics represent something that they do not. People should be taught some basic statistics at school. They might learn to take things with a pinch of salt.

Thanks, I look forward to the day AOL brings it back.

Also I heard a good quote from someone talking about a MacBook, they'd been shown one of good specs about ?2000. They said it's like buying your first car you have to get a small loan to get it. Apple bringing us back to past when families would have to scrimp together to buy their first computer.

If you can't afford the ?2,000 computer then buy a PC. There is no way to avoid spending a fortune on a house or car, but you can get a cheap computer if you need one. Apple simply aren't big enough to "bring us back to past ..". They are no threat to Windows users.

Apple is a billion dollar company so why should they care if they have the lion's share of the market share or not. They are already laughing all the way to the bank.

I actually agree. That's the reason why they switched from "Apple Computer" to "Apple Inc".

Mac's and related computing account for about 1/3 of their total revenues. They are now a consumer electronics company that makes a PC with a it's own novelty OS. Even if the iPod business flattens, the iPhone game is a huge multiplier. They can afford to keep Macs as this boutique solution. Just look at the exponential growth in the iPod/iPhone business verus their sub-double digit OS desktop share for the last 30yrs.

Their cheerleaders in the MSM and blogosphere however can't afford to parrot that marketing logic going forward in face of Win7. That's why you see this visceral lashing out at these ad's from Giz/Engagdet et all. You have "Tech Writers" who couldn't write an "if/else statement" if their lives depended on it but are 'opinion makers'. Unfortunatley the world is bigger than than their little sandbox.

Apple's 2Q earnings were announced. They did lose Mac sales, but gained in PMP and phone sales.

Sales of iPod music players were up 3.4% from a year ago, and iPhone sales totalled 3.79 million units, up 253% from a year ago.

But Macintosh computer sales were 2.2 million units, down 3.9% from a year ago.

I was browsing today and found this, http://gs.statcounter.com/#os-ww-daily-20080701-20090413. It shows Mac OS X's market share at 6.13% in July 2008 but by April it had halved to around 3.74%. Taking in account a margin of area on both figures there is a very clear picture been painted by Stat Counter. Macs market share is falling. Knowing what forum I've posted this in I have a hunch what reception this is going to get.

Apple is notorious for using the US figures to tout market share but ignore the figures for world wide market share which is half of the US share. That number you saw of 3.74% is represetnative of the Mac's actual world wide market share.

Apple needs to quit confusing people and admit to their real market share instead of padding the numbers with US figures only.

They are more expensive because they provide quality and give you more for the buck than a garbage PC with Windows can provide.

Pigs fly, Obama is the savior of the world and Steve jobs does not poop like normal people because he is a God.

Haha more stupid, garbage posts from cabron. Suprise, suprise.

My MADE IN JAPAN Sony VAIO with WINDOWS on it surely must be inferior to a beautiful piece of Apple machinery built in the fine province of Guangdong, China (hey, that's where my $400 ASUS netbook is built too!).

The perfect Apple customer right here folks.

I bet many non-Apple PC's are built in the same factory by the same workers too.

    • Visual Studio finally gets long-awaited feature that developers will love by Usama Jawad Visual Studio Code is Microsoft's popular, lightweight, open-source code editor, it is actually Visual Studio that is the company's flagship integrated development environment (IDE). Although the IDE already offers a boatload of useful features for developers, Microsoft has finally introduced a long-requested capability that will be loved by many. While developers have already been able to create Git pull requests (PRs) directly within Visual Studio for the past couple of years, it had not been possible to review a PR without switching to the browser, until now. Microsoft revealed in December 2025 that it is working on UX that enables developers to do just that, and fast-forward to June 2026, and Visual Studio finally has native capabilities to open and inspect a PR, discuss feedback, and wrap up the review, all without switching to the browser. This integration works for both GitHub and Azure DevOps (including on-prem). Developers have access to multiple surfaces to open a PR, including Git Repository, Git Changes, and the Git menu in Visual Studio. Once you open a PR, all the important details will be immediately visible to you, from where you can navigate to various levels of granularity and branch states, depending on the reviews that you are engaged in. As you would expect, you also get a diff view that enables you to see code changes inline or side-by-side in a separate panel. You can also review commit-by-commit. Additionally, this UX fosters collaboration as you can leave comments, reply to threads, and resolve conversations easily. Naturally, you can also leverage Copilot to apply a code suggestion to fix a potential issue. When you are done, you have the ability to approve, complete, and merge the PR. This is a pretty major feature as it has been requested heavily for the past few years. You can try it out in Visual Studio 2026 version 18.7, made available here recently. Microsoft plans to enhance this experience further in future releases with comment filtering, a timeline of PR activity, and more.

    • Around 68% of developers are now using AI to generate code during development, and some experts are saying that a single developer using AI tools can now do the work of an entire team of 4 to 5 engineers.  According to Figma's State of the Designer 2026 report, 72% of designers now use generative AI in their workflows and 91% say it improves the quality of their work, not just their speed.  But does this mean web developers and designers are becoming less relevant, or are they simply evolving into a different kind of role? Would love to hear from developers and designers here has AI made your job easier, or do you feel threatened by how fast these tools are improving
