oops I meant "Vista looks better THAN Win7"

Don't get me wrong, win7 is fast stable and reliable...no question it's better...but cosmetically, I'm afraid it's not.

People are not going to be able to tell this is a new version of windows, as it looks way too much like Vista. They may just not upgrade thinking its just vista, and vista has a bad rep.

But in cosmetic dept.

These are the things I prefer in Vista.

-Fade in into the login screen - not in win7 it just abruptly pop-ups after boot screen ? not very elegant.

-Toolbar is plain looking in win7 with no icons - this looked much better in vista.

-Start orb glow in win7 looks odd

-Transparency when window is maximized does not look good at all ? should be black like in vista. Same with the taskbar.

-Default background for login and installation ? it?s nice and all ? a little feminine looking but it really does not make the login screen look good or modern. And the white font ?windows 7 ultimate? at the bottom blend in too much with the background.

-The animations while coping or moving or deleting files is pretty ugly and looked better in Vista.

That?s about it.

But although I love Win 7 so much more than Vista (win 7 screams) cosmetically win7 seems unfinished.

Edit - I would like to add the following.

--The boot screen in Win7 - is leaps and bounds better than Vista. It's hard to explain, but I get the sense that it's modern/futuristic and a look (peek) into what is coming for Win7

Everyone's entitled to their opinion. And while I respect yours, I disagree on every single point you brought up. I get the same feeling about 7 compared to Vista as I did with Vista compared to XP (visually). I think 7 is fantastic. And while I still love Vista's feel and appearance, 7 is a vast improvement.

And don't even get me started on that archaic, UGLY XP :D

Yeah I hear ya...but don't you think it's a little rough around the edges?

I had XP on my work comp for like years now... and I can't stand luna... I work only in clasic....

Yeah I hear ya...but don't you think it's a little rough around the edges?

Not in the slightest. We'll just have to agree to disagree on this. I think 7 is near perfection as is (visually).

It's hard to describe but when I complete an installation...I'm like, what - this is it????? It's 2009, and somehow I feel like MS should be able to blow our socks off. Vista is so 2006. Cosmetically I expected so much more...but man did they get the plumbing right, eH?

I might be wrong, but I'm expecting a new skin ( skin not GUI lol ) and new icon set for the RTM of 7...

Why?

Well they haven't even changed the beta fish wallpaper, indicating they still have some surprises for us ;)

Also have you noticed how they are giving us piece by piece the new wallpapers, sounds, icons, etc..?

Almost like " Let's only put essential stuff now and wait for the last builds for making people surprised by RTM " this on the GUI part...

Beta -> New boot

RC -> New Login wallpaper

RTM -> ???? Maybe icon set and skin ?????

True... I mean, man the power is in their hands now. If they can cosmetically upgrade a 2006 look into a more modern and fresh looking skin. Then they will have the biggest success ever! - I say this because, man, Win7 is perfect (speed, reliability, stability etc..) it just looks dated and unfinished... like I said, it seems like something is coming, and will blow us away.

There a bugs still.

Can anyone confirm this?

Album art not appearing. When I open WMP 12, sometimes the album art will not display, then I need to toggle between album art and artist to make the art appear.

Also, I challenge anyone using sync to try converting the source files (MP3 or whatever) to a lower settings using WMP12. I tried every possible setting and always results in errors. My original source file (Wave looseness) about 26 MB per song does not convert to MP3, 128 bit rate to my device using WMP 12 sync abilities. Clear as mud?give it a shot it will not work.

This is frustrating because I like uncompromised quality in my music when listening to music on my desktop, but require minimal sounds quality when listening to music on my BlackBerry Bold device. WMP 12 does not accommodate. It?s a bug, and no one seems to care, so I think it?s a feature that many people do not use?

I agree with every point except the login screen. I think the new one looks great. It's much better than Vista's, and I don't really see where you're getting feminine from, but , whatever. Yeah, Windows 7 looks good, but it still is a bit rough.

Oh course, this doesn't mean that Windows Vista looks better.. there were things that were improved in 7. The window borders looks much better than those in Vista, the taskbar is much better looking than Vista's. Personally, I feel that 7 looks better overall, but it's kind of a two steps forward, one step back thing.

I'm not surprised though. This is Microsoft's "thing". They're good at developing something new and eye-appealing, but they fail MISERABLY on the fine touches. This is true of all of their products. So, I don't expect them to change before RTM.

...

Seven.. uses.. Vista.. as its core.

The only thing that's different is the Orb and a few other minor changes.

If they really encouraged you to make a thread to talk about how Vista looks "better", wow.. yeah..

I also am going to have to stay away from this and say

DISAGREE.

I have used the beta a few times but always end up going back to Vista within a day or two. To me they are almost the same and since I never had any problems with Vista I didn't notice any performance increase or anything. You can see the power of the media right there. They are the ones that gave Vista a bad rep.

There are certain things I like and dislike about Windows 7 when I compare it Vista. I feel that everything that was done in Windows 7 could have easily been done with Vista but the problem is the media already gave it a bad rep so here we have Windows 7. An improved version a Vista with some new features.

I like the look, feel, and features of the Explorer Window in Vista more than 7. Also, are they going to get rid of the "My Documents" "My Pictures "My My My" folders when 7 goes retail? I thought they made a good decision by ditching the "My" prefix in Vista. In the beta I noticed it came back in the actual folder names. However, in the Explorer sidebar and "Libraries" folder the "My" prefix is missing. Seems a little inconsistent. Can anyone with the RC up-and-running verify or dismiss this?

So you say it looks too much like Vista...Then you go on to list all the visual differences in 7 and suggest that they change them back to the ones in Vista. Alright, that makes sense

I suggest you learn how to read...

The items I list would not change the look too drastically, you know the overall look of the OS, and would my changes make you think that it’s entirely a new OS or would you think its still vista’esque. They were finer details that seemed more polished in Vista.

But yeah, if you can grasp that, then you would realized that even if they would revert back to making these small tweaks….with or without them, the average Joe is going to think Vista 1.5 at most.

Assuming you're talking about the public beta:

You do know that when Vista was at beta 2 it still had a good deal of leftover XP icons? Also back then the maximized black was a lot darker than it was at final. Or how about the welcome sound was still XP's.

Point being is that they're not done yet. The login screen has yet to get its new startup sound (it would be a dumb branding decision to make Vista and 7 boot to the same sound after they went ahead and changed the load screen animation), the iconless command bar was decided on for various reasons, and the maximized non-transparent windows was done after a boatload of people bitched about it.

As for the taskbar I disagree. Vista's taskbar was far too dark unless you had a lighter wallpaper with a heavy texture on the bottom.

    • WordArt was cool. We now have color fonts as a substitute although Word only supports COLRv0 and COLRv1 (Fraud OS 11 only). The OpenType SVG color font format needs to be supported by Office. Adobe's apps support it
    • i backup my files, incl keepass to my proton drive using Syncback which i paid for (thanks Warwagon!). they have a free version but i can't remember what it does and doesn't do anymore. anyways, it's really, really simple and easy to use. i also periodically keep backups of my keepass onsite especially when i've changed or added a password that is important to me. if you don't wanna spend time on the syncthing setup, get syncback. haha i even got my dad to use it for his backups to usb and he doesn't even need my help!!! (thank god!)
