Windows 7 Build 7000 to 7100 Upgrade - Known Issues, Bugs & Fixes

Recommended Posts

Seeing as the RC is going to be publicly available to everyone on May 5th, I thought it would be a good idea to let people know what they can expect if they decide to undergo an UPGRADE from build 7000 (the Public Beta) to build 7100 (the Public RC).

As most of you know, with just a few tweaks, you can for once upgrade from one pre-RTM build to another without losing any of your settings or programs... well almost.

First off, see https://www.neowin.net/news/main/09/04/07/w...ou-need-to-know for instructions on what you need to do to get the upgrade going; but BEWARE! This isn't recommended or supported by Microsoft and you may experience problems.

One major one that I've personally heard of is all of the start menu items disappearing, but I know that there is most likely more bugs than that.

I would ask that all who read this and have undergone an upgrade from 7000 to 7100 ONLY (not any other build, sorry but the majority of users will only be upgrading from 7000) to post how their experience went. Any issues, bugs and any applicable fixes. They will then be put into this post to inform and help everyone else.

The Windows 7 Testing Community and I thank you! :)

also upgrading from 7000 though an option is not advised or supported

Yes, I hope I have made that clear in my initial post.

Well, it worked great for me! Couldn't even tell it upgraded. All my settings and installed programs were the same!

Will chalk you up to my new list of "No aparrent problems" :)

I doubt you'll find many here who kept 7000 around until 7100 came out.

Most will have used 7077 (or 7068) before, and also rather did a clean install instead of upgrading.

Yeah, I know what you're saying... I wonder whether we will get another small influx of people due to the RC? Obviously not as many as the Beta, but still...

Upgraded from 7000 to 7100 last night. So far, the only problems I've noticed are that Libraries that I had created didn't survive the upgrade so they had to be remade. As far as the start menu goes, my only issue is that it reset to the default list rather than keeping my most used apps.

I wonder why? Keeping the list of the most used apps should be no problem at all.

I will be one of the few that has not had any other build except for 7000, I thought that it was great to see all the others get all these newer builds and fun doing it. But for me it was always going to be the RC and then the RTM version when it hits the shops shelves.

Better that way, otherwise I might have gotten in trouble with my IT person.

I don't call myself caveman for nothing you know.

Don't forget the users that have an empty start menu or it doesn't happen in the transition from 700 to 7100?

I won't say it for sure, but I've personally seen no reports of that when upgrading from 7000 to 7100.

Unless someone else knows something I don't?

I get an error that I have a program called "Disk Expert v2" installed that needs to be uninstalled before the upgrade can continue (32 bit - trying to upgrade from build 7000 which installed fine and gave no such error).

I don't have anything in add/remove programs that looks remotely like "Disk Expert", so I have no clue what program the compatibility checker is finding. Any ideas out there?

The only problem I have is that it loses the files that are synced with a remote server. To upgrade, one would need to sync first, then upgrade, then sync again. However I won't be back home where the remote server is until June. If there's a workaround I'd love to know it, else I'm stuck on 7000 for now!

I did upgrade my netbook to 7100, everything's running fine on it.

Upgrade successful. So far, no major issue for me. Just some minor issues:

  • Shared folder gone (Solution: re-add them)

  • Drive letters changed (Solution: re-map them, if neccessary)

  • Microsoft Virtual PC not working (Solution: reinstall, and it works fine | Download Windows Virtual PC)
    (Issues that already added)
  • User added folders no longer included in Libraries (Solution: Re-add folders previously located in said Libraries)

side-note: Windows Embedded CE was reported not going to work properly, but I find no issue with it.

The upgrade from 7057 to 7100 wrecked my install. Then when I upgraded from 7100 to 7127 it wrecked access permissions on two of my drives (for both my Win7 install and my Vista install), requiring me to boot into safe mode to get access back. I highly recommend people simply format and start again - it might be more hassle but it's worth it.

Yes, a fresh install is always clearly preferable. While it might cost more time re-installing your apps, you save time with a much shorter installation of the OS, and you don't have to spend any time troubleshooting any weird bugs caused by the upgrade.

    • The concern of this article is not getting "hacked". No one is taking over my Google account and anyone that was is far away from self-hosting their passwords. It was about your big tech account of choice deciding to reduce features or getting out of the password manager business altogether. Bitwarden (or say Proton) is professional security company offering opensource solutions. They are going no where and one can easily download or export their passwords to another password manager service regardless. They again also offer self-hosted option. I doubt many people were sold on this solution based on the write up. The author had a number of warnings and caveats themselves. A local, self-managed solution is not for 99% of users.
    • I've owned nothing but ATi/AMD GPUs since 2002, after my last nVidia GPU in 2001 (3dfx before that), IIRC, and in all of that time I recall getting this error maybe once, certainly no more than twice. Despite all the scuttlebutt as to how poor AMD drivers are supposed to be that has certainly not been my experience at all... Usually it has been a configuration problem of some kind. Then again, since we're dealing with OS versions that are EOL, it could easily be an OS version discrepancy. It's still weird to think that Win11 has been officially out for more than five years!
    • AI will never be the jobs panacea some companies fantasize about today. Oracle is likely using it as an excuse, which we will see a lot of companies doing, I'm certain. They love their "plausible" excuses for their downturns. A couple of weeks ago my wife asked me to call Krogers about some discrepancy in a online grocery order, and it will be the last time either of us does that. I'll just do emails with humans from now on... The AI experience was horrible--the obviously recorded voice started asking a bunch of questions about our orders six months prior(!) and saying, "Is this in reference to your order on January 6, for $****?" You say "No!" and immediately the next question is "Is this in reference to your order on January 29th, for $****?" again, I answered "No!"--and it was incredible--on and on it went like that for fully 20 minutes until we finally got to the present, and only then was I put through to a human with authentic intelligence... I wondered why on Earth the idiot AI didn't start with the most recent orders and work back from there, as it was something anyone with a functioning brain would have done. And why didn't the AI have enough sense to ask me what the problem was in the first place? It didn't take too much deduction to understand that the goal of this "AI" was to cause the person on the phone to hang up in disgust, with no resolution of the problem. That begs another question: why pay for a tool-free problem line if the goal is to avoid solving your customer's problems?... Fortunately, Krogers does have real humans capable of reading an email and understanding it, and if she sees another situation in the future that's route she or I will take. The online grocery delivery service from Krogers has been great, over all, but their AI truly sucks.
    • AI is the justification that company administrators use to lay people off; it is not the end all, be all touted in the media (many of whom can't tell a microchip from a potato chip). Greed is main driving factor behind its adoption; the other is remaining relevant in the face of competition from other entities.
