Open Remote Play v1.2 Released!

Recommended Posts

Well it certainly was no lie, a week ago we told you about a hacker by the name of Dashhacker who had managed to reverse engineer the PS3 remote play feature, today he has released his first beta version of his application. Right now it is for only MAC's (Intel based), PC version is expected next week. So those who are new to this, what does it do? Basically you can now control your PS3 via laptop, iPhone, pretty much most hand held devices/PDA's . Currently for this you need a MAC (intel based) computer, and a hacked PSP to export remote play settings.

Someone with a MAC want to give this a spin? :p

After 2 weeks of hardcore reverse-engineering, it's now possible!

I would like to thank DarkAlex for hacking the PSP. Without his work, ORP

would not be possible. I would also like to thank TyRaNiD for psplink and

prxtool. Using psplink makes this type of work almost painless! Thanks to

jas0nuk for the essential PRXdecrypter utility.

ORP Howto:

  • If you have not done so already, register your PSP with your PS3 for Remote Play.

  • Copy the ORP_Export folder
    (it's included)
    to your PSP under /PSP/GAME

  • Run Open Remote Play Export on your PSP. This will create a file on the memory stick called export.orp. Copy this file to your PC.

  • Run the ORP GUI and click on Import, locate and import export.orp. You will have to manually change the IP address of your PS3, by default it will be set to 0.0.0.0. I keep two profiles, one for local LAN and another for when I'm connecting from the Internet. You can create multiple profiles by simply changing the Name field and clicking Save.

  • Click Import again, this time locate and import "keys.orp." You only have to do this once for a new installation, or if there is a key update.

  • Select a profile, cross your fingers, and click Launch!

As for uses of this, not that much gaming content supports remote play but one thing you could do that people do on their PSPs is if you're at work, get out your iPhone on a Thursday and start downloading any content from the PSN store on your PS3 that you want to play that night. Saves you taking your PSP to work if everything above works smoothly over LAN and Internet.

Means you could watch live TV on your iPhone/PC/Mac/Laptop once the application supports more than just MAC.

Hopefully Sony sees this as an oppurtunity to provide an official client for accessing your PS3 from your PC or the web, and doesn't just release a firmware patch to fix this exploit.

lol..which do you really think will happen?

from sony's point of view, they may be restricted by licensing etc

Version 1.1 bring windows support

Here you go ? Open Remote Play for both the Mac and Windows. And not only that ? Dashhacker has released the source code. So if you're a developer and wish to contribute: visit the Open Remote Play Google Code project page. Your efforts are greatly appreciated. And remember, you read it here firsBoom, posted.Open Remote Play v1.1; things you should know:

  1. ORP v1.1 introduces game launching, video scaling (1.5x & 2x size), full screen mode, and many bug fixes.
  2. The Mac version, awesome, absolutely awesome. Little bit of key lag? Not much.
  3. Windows, well some of you may have issues, some may not? In our case we've tested XP, it seems to work fine with some minor issues. Vista, not so much ? seems to bail on something? Maybe someone can test and report their experiences below or in the forums. Windows 7 (64bit) users ? it works. You may need to resize the Window (drag the bottom right corner) to see the "Save", "Delete", and "Cancel" options when editing your ORP profile.

What's planned? Check this ?is ?[/url]

  • Add joystick support with a default SIXAXIS/DS3 button map.
  • Add proper audio+video synchronization (added a quick hack for now).
  • Add ability to set/manage buffering and bit-rate profiles.
  • Add error messages to the player instead of just bailing silently.
  • Implement power-on support.
  • Clean-up and document API.

i think i've got pretty recent firmware on my PSP 1000...is that hackable (yet)?

It's an original PSP, so it's hackable in any firmware version with the Pandora Battery, so if you get that, you'll be sorted. Worked like a charm from me, and I was at 5.00 at the time. ;)

EDIT: Here's what you need: Pandora Battery and Magic Memory Stick. It'll cost you about ?25 in total, but it's completely worth it!:))

Just sold my PS3 yesterday DAMMIT. Why couldnt i see this earlier. It would have made me keep it and rig up Play TV to th ePS3

Dunno how well PlayTV will work with it.

Gimme 15-20 mins and I'll try to capture a video of how good it runs. It could end up all laggy and crappy quality anyway. I guess if you were watching it on a laptop though it wouldn't be as much of an issue as a 22/24" monitor if quality is slightly lower. Or an iPhone for that matter, but I don't think 1.1 supports the iPhone yet.

A PSP is needed to extract a remote play keycode from your PS3, and it has to be modded to run homebrew.

I got PlayTV working downstairs, still brought up another memory read error crash after a few seconds, but I was able to navigate channels and see a picture. I'll wait on a more stable build. There was very little lag if any at all, just ran similarly to how it runs on the PSP.

Music works fine, just about to check video

Untitled2-1.jpg

It's just applications that launch away from the XMB I'm having issues with. Tried to play PixelJunk Monsters and it crashed as well.

Issues with launching something (PlayTV is this instance)

Also, for fun :p

I had it running all day yesterday to monitor my downloads, not a single crash on Vista 32bit. I was even able to start PixelJunk Eden and I got to the Title Screen and back to the XMB without a crash, guess I'm just lucky^^

Now better than ever — Dashhacker’s Open Remote Play v1.2 BETA. All you Windows users, you’re going to dig this one… Most notably ORP v1.2 introduces support for the SIXAXIS/DS3 controller, the required driver is included for Windows, and on the Mac, it just works. Also added is mouse support and a much-improved full-screen mode. Check the change log for the rest…

ORP v1.2 changes…

  • Vastly improved full-screen mode. Scales video to desktop resolution, much faster and now works as expected under Windows.
  • Added proper padding for audio/video packets. This fixes the random read access violation crashes under Windows.
  • Added support for SIXAXIS/DS3.
  • Added mouse support.
  • Added SELECT (F3) and START (F4) keyboard mappings.
  • Fixed CTRL-key issues, thanks to lethalwp for the patch.
  • And more…

Get it while it’s hot… ORP 1.2 is the last official release for awhile. Cheers!

    • (macOS) Screen zoom was broken for me in beta 1 and it's now working properly in beta 2. In terms of performance and UI design/consistency, these betas are already much better than Tahoe.
    • Less powerful than a PS5 at twice the price! I wonder if they use that for marketing? Totally DoA.
