Hi there,

I've decided (and set-up) a server at home and am going to be dabbling in doing a bit of hosting and having remote access to my network at home.

So I've got a server setup and running Windows Server 2008, and IIS and everything - this accessible from the current IP on the outside world (using a seperate connection to test this), and I can verify that it is accessible. The ports are all forwarded, yaddah yah...

Now, I've only got a dyamic IP address, and I don't have an option of changing this - I wish I could go static but do not have a choice.

I've messed around with this heaps previously, and have yet again, set up an account with dyndns.org so that I can access the server all the time from a single address. This being owenw.doesntexist.com - my problem is, that even though this is being updated (as reported by the DYNDNS client on the server) and the fact that I can definately view the server via the current IP on the outside world, the address will not work, even though it responds to pings.

So my question is, what is going on here? Why can I not access it when using the auto-updated dydns domain, but can when I use the IP?

Any help is much, much appreciated, and I hope I've been detailed enough :)

not sure that you have set it up right.

on my dynamic account when i do a look up i get

canonical name bluefish.getmyip.com.

aliases

addresses 80.189.96.113

on yours i get

lookup failed owenw.doesntexist.org

Could not find an IP address for this domain name.

so i looks like the owenw.doesntexist.org is not getting an IP address, have you looked at the website to see what IP address it is seeing?

hope that makes sence ;)

My domain is owenw.doesntexist.com - that could be why that lookup didnt work - it was a typo in the original post - updating now.

Yeah that helps !! ;)

I now see your domain with an IP address of 125.238.236.103, however i still get an error when trying to connect.

Connection Interrupted

The document contains no data.

The network link was interrupted while negotiating a connection. Please try again.

are you filtering access in any way?

i am able to get to it. both by ip and by name.

make sure you aren't using http://www.owenw.doesntexist.com, it is just http://owenw.doesntexist.com, if you have ftp open then it would be ftp://owenw.doesntexist.com, if you have a different service on a different port then it would be http://owenw.doesntexist.com:[port number here]

you do not have a www record for owenw.doesntexist.com so www will not work.

    • Cooler Master MasterFrame 600 PC case is now 33% off on Amazon by Ivan Jenic The Cooler Master MasterFrame 600 is currently $109.99 on Amazon, down from its original $164.99 list price. That's 33% off and $55 saved on this premium aluminum mid-tower case with a modular design. If you're upgrading your PC case and want something that doesn't force you into a rigid layout, the MasterFrame 600 is worth a look. The case is built around the Cooler Master's FreeForm 2.0 platform, which lets you reconfigure the internal structure according to your hardware. Magnetic side panels allow for straightforward adjustments, and the case supports everything from Mini-ITX to E-ATX motherboards without compromise. There's also generous cooling headroom. Four pre-installed PWM fans handle airflow out of the box. GPU clearance goes up to 410mm, and the case supports radiators up to 420mm with room for three simultaneously. Truth be told, this might not be the prettiest case on the market, but it’s highly functional. The aluminum construction keeps the whole thing lightweight despite its size, and the finish looks noticeably better than the plastic mid-towers competing at this price point. If you want a serious, flexible case that prioritizes function over flashy aesthetics like RGB lighting, the MasterFrame 600 delivers at a reasonable price.
