Do you lose anything with a jailbroken iPhone...?

Recommended Posts

Loving my first iPhone (3GS on o2, uk).. have been reading a lot about jailbreaking, and unlocking, whilst the latter does not appeal to me just yet, not til my contract with o2 runs out in 17 months.. jailbreaking seems very tempting...

Ive read about the mnay benefits, but have yet to come across any disadvantages... other than the obvious possibility of bricking your handset, albeit a slim chance...

If I were to jailbreak my 3gs v3.0, would I loose any of the current functionality I have with it...?? I assume I would have to ditch iTunes, which is no hardship at all.. but would I not be able to use the app store from the handset, are my only options then to use the unofficial spplications...?? Would all my defualt and preinstalled apps still work ok...???? or could I not use any oficial apps at all..???

Can anyone provide any disadvatages to jailbreaking...

Thanks

Why do you lose battery life?

Well assuming you jailbreak your phone you'll start using applications like themes or status bars that run in the background thus eating battery life.

Quite frankly if you have a 3GS, the only real benefits to you jailbreaking right now is the ability to change themes and SMS Tones. Most of the other "fun" apps have issues on the 3GS for various reasons, but eventually they will be fully compatible.

Also if you are not unlocking there is ZERO chance that you can brick your phone. Jailbreaking only applies to the application layer and not the radio software, so even if you somehow upload a bad IPSW you can always force the phone into DFU mode and restore it normally with iTunes. It's when you start fooling with the baseband software that you put yourself at risk of ruining the phone.

Don't do this man. For every unlocked iphone mr jobs looses 1 million dollars... and we all know how hard is to not be multi billionaire these days...

Jailbreaking and unlocking are two different things. That's to mention that Apple themselves sells factory unlocked iPhones too -- I have one (but only in Hong Kong and a few other countries)

I've read that after jail breaking, push notifications stop working. Need confirmation though.

This is only an issue with unlocked 3G's, and fixes are being worked on.

As others have said there's no real disadvantages, but seeing as your a new iPhone user I would definitely WAIT for the official dev team 3GS jailbreak - it should coincide nicely for when the novelty of safari et al starts wearing off.

This is the only site you need for jailbreak info, and make sure you read the posts very carefully: http://blog.iphone-dev.org

just to add to this. push doesn't work on 2G either. Its a problem with iphones that have been hacktivated during the jailbreak. I heard if you activate your phone with an official SIM, then do the jailbreak you won't have the push problem.

I'm just going to wait for 3.1 to come out, hopefully dev team will have the push problem figured out. If they don't, then I'll try activating an official SIM.

    • Anyway to download these versions without being on the Experimental builds?
    • Nothing is stopping you from continuing with your testing cadence. If updates are released every 2 weeks instead of 4, and you test once every 4 weeks, the exact same amount of patches will still be available for you in those 4 weeks. For example: Before 4th week - patch 1, 2, 3, 4 After 2nd week - patch 1 and 2 4th week - patch 3 and 4 Still the same amount after 4.
    • Everyone else has said it. I'm gonna say it - you don't know what you're talking about. I do. I have two laptops. One work, one personal. I have access to two more laptops - both personal. At home I manually update my personal laptop when I see on Neowin that there is an update - I carry on and only apply the updates when I am ready. My work one only updates when my workplace decides to send it - I carry on and only apply the updates (when they actually arrive, which is usually days after the release) when I switch off the laptop at the end of the day as usual. The two other personal laptops only get updated when I get to it which is rarely - the people who own them carry on using them until I get to it and update them. All of the browsers on all laptops are configured to restore the tabs when launched. Google and Microsoft have changed from 6 weeks to 4, and it looks like it's going to move to 2. None of these changes affect how any of these browsers on the laptops are used. Not one jot. My advice to you is stop panicking whenever you see an update. Just carry on with what you're doing. This even benefits you in a way - from your comment you sound like you don't like the changes or the frivolous new features - great - then carry on as before!
