Here is the issue, when I extract large backups (zip,rar,7z) with either WinRAR or 7zip (latest versions and previous versions) I encounter memory usage increasing quite rapidly to 100% and the machine becomes very sluggish.

I tried to see what happens with the RAM using resource monitor but I couldn't find where the ram was allocated.

UPDATE: It also happens on installations of big software like games, it possible that any constant I/O operation by the same process eats up the memory.

My specs:

Windows 7 RC 64BIT (7100)

Intel Q6600 not overclocked at the moment

ABIT IX38 QuadGT motherboard (X38 chipset with ICH9R Sata controller)

4GB of DDR2-800 RAM

Crossfired pair of Radeon 3870s

Latest drivers of everything

2x Seagate 320GB 7200.10 (none raid)

1x Hitachi 160GB Sata HDD

Any ideas? where all the memory goes?!

Hello Beastage,

I have the same problem, and i have no solution,

can i ask you one question: what is your HDD Type ?? is it Dynamic Disk or Basic Disk, you can check this in Disk management under computer management

what is you HDD make and model ?? (like Samsung, Seagate, etc...)(250gb, 500GB, etc...)

Updated the specs, they are basic disks

Bleh, the plot thickens... before I made this thread I was extracting a backup from older install with some Mass Effect save games , so now I'm installing Mass Effect and I'm having the same memory usage problem... I didn't notice this happening before with installs like this.

I have WinRar 3.80 and 7-Zip 4.65 installed. Win 7 RC 64-bit (Build 7100). No issues at all. And I use WinRar many

times a day. Odd issue. Can't say if it's a Win 7, 7-Zip or WinRar issue. Just that it does not affect me at all.

sorry, my board does not support that, because I only have ICH7, and not the ICH7R version, so no AHCI mode with intel matrix storage manager

our chipsets are in the same intel chipset series( yours is a the high end and mine is the low end model of the same intel chipset series )

Which build of WinRAR? And are you using the 32-bit version?

If running a 64-bit version of Windows (and you should be, with that setup!), match a 64-bit version of WinRAR to it. Even on the really large spanned RAR sets, I have *lower* RAM usage than with WinRAR 32-bit.

64bit 3.90

Do you get this issue with any specific archive, or does it apply to all archives that you extract?

Any archive and now I noticed in some bigger installs (game installs, etc)

Holy crap! I never knew they even made one. I just installed my old 32 bit archived copy.
