James Cameron's Avatar in 3D

Recommended Posts

In fact, many non Sci-Fi/Fantasy movie goers are already respecting it now. Like, James Cameron is smart using Leona Lewis on the theme song!

Just so many of these movies now in this genre, and unfair to being be robbed by an ordinary drama with good acting/plot that has NO action, and no FX at all (MUCH less movie effort)

I agree with you that a new genre for this kind of movies is needed, but saying that great movies with lots of CGI like Avatar are being robbed by "traditional" movies with no effort put to them is wrong.

Effort should not be measured by the amount of FX or CGI a movie has. Actors and Directors have to put a lot more of acting effort in traditional drama movies than the likes of Avatar which are driven by more than a plot or characters.

I say this even when I loved Avatar. It is already one of my all-time favorites!

Just came back from the movie theater and watched it in 3D, this is the first movie that I ever see in 3D and I must say it left a long lasting impression on me, I was really speechless at times, I didn't want to leave the movie theater once it was finished, felt like I had really lived that story, wow what an experience! gonna go watch it on Imax again soon.

The Plan is this is supposed to be one of the first true blu-ray 3D titles, however your player and TV must support this, the oldschool way of 3D on DVD or blu-ray is not very good at all such as the "My bloody valentine 3D" blu-ray

the glasses that came with my copy of that sucked balls and i tried the better quality glasses i got from different movie theatre's and those are not the correct kind.

I assume the DVD will probably have the old school 3D, not sure if the blu-ray will have both new and old or just new

Yes but we all know I meant the kind of CGI movies that's also Great with acting and characters!

Like Avatar, NOT like Transformers 2

The Dark Knight was a PERFECT example of it being robbed!

I kept my glasses from the theater, Im using the PS3 and Sony XBR4 tv, Ill pray to the movie gods that its enough to work. Was the glasses for valentine 3d the old school red/blue or the newer grey lens? If I have to Ill buy a new TV just for this movie. :D

The RealD glasses are the ones im talking about, those don't work for the Valentine 3d blu-ray, the ones that came in the movie were not red blue and not really the same as the RealD lenses either

but the Tru3D blu-ray movies that require a player and TV with hardware support use a special kind of glasses that a electronically connected to the system not just plain polarized lenses

Man, on SHH the people on that board are talking about this movie like CRAZY, unlike here.

Some of the good posts there

Yes, you?ve seen this story told before, in its broad strokes, in various forms. Yes, it defends a rather simplistic Rousseaunian good nature/bad civilization philosophy. Yes, some of the dialogue is pretty cringe-worthy and the general is just as one-note a villain as the Billy Zane character from Titanic.

The fact that, in spite of these flaws, Avatar is still a breathtaking cinematic experience unlike anything you seen before is a testimony to James Cameron?s talent as a filmmaker. If Cameron the writer was as talented as Cameron the director, he?d be the new Shakespeare.

You seen the story of a man strained from civilization who rediscovers himself by learning from a people in communion with nature before, but not told like this. More than any recent genre film, Cameron made me wonder and believe in a world that does not exist, like suddenly I was a kid seeing Star Wars for the first time.

It?s not just the CGI, which is tremendous – you forget the Na?Vi are FX, they become characters, their acting is as real as acting gets. It?s an incredibly well-constructed world, combining wild imagination with a believable sense of geography, biology, culture and spirituality. Pandora is a tropical Middle Earth of unseen beauty, visiting it feels like it must have felt to explore the Amazon Forest for the first time, everything is scary and mysterious and fascinating and awe-inspiring.

Avatar is certainly not new as a story – Dances With Wolves is only one of its many sources, that would also include Tarzan, John Carter of Mars and many others. But as a concept, it is original, a potential major sci-fi franchise that?s not based on technology gizmos or freakish mutations or time/space distortions, but on the power of nature presented in a new way. Like my generation dreamed of flying the X-Wings, many kids of today may dream of riding the creatures of Avatar.

There is a fascinating element in the character of Jake Sullivan, that he?s not as strained from cibilization when he meets the Na?Vi as the Kevin Costner character in DWW. He has dreams of his life as a human and he has allegiances to fulfill. He has moments of being torn, and moments where the Na?Vi seem to have every reason to completely reject him as one of their own. In his wheelchair, I almost see him as a metaphor for the moviegoing audience, stuck in our “wheelchairs” as the incredibly immersive quality of the movie allows us to go where we can never go and do what we can never do.

Will this be, much like Titanic, an experience that?s amazing to watch for the first time but may lose a lot of its impact over the years?Who knows, but one thing no one can ever deny Cameron is his will and craft to push the envelope of the cinematic experience. He has already created one of the most beloved genre franchises of all time – one which suffers terribly without him – with Terminator, and he just might have done it again.

Cameron may have created the Aquarius Age Star Wars.

It is kind of ironic that people pick Avatar to gripe about originality. The overwhelming majority of movies that are released have about 1/10 the originality that is in avatar.

It's not a remake, sequel, or an adaption. Hell it's got a brand new language, brand new culture, brand new complex and connected eco system, and so many brand new ideas.

Look at the way they rode the animals by connecting that thingamabob. when has that ever been used?

when have we ever had a movie about futuristic humans going to another planet to force native extra terrestrials to evacuate their native land? Instead of going the easy predictable route with overpopulation or we need a new planet to live on because we destroyed our own, Cameron went for something new, while connecting it to today's problems by making it about mining for an energy source. It's something we can all understand because of our relations with the middle east being corrupted by oil. He made it even more interesting by making their atmosphere toxic to humans.

Cameron could have copied dances with wolves and just sent a human with a human body to learn the ways of the Navi. But he instead made the atmosphere toxic to humans, so the main character needed a Navi body to accomplish the task. He added emotional depth to the character by making him paralyzed from the waist down. It made his experience in his avatar body even more liberating, because the character went from a helpless criple to a powerful man who can jump higher and run faster than any human could ever hope to.

How is that flying right over people's heads when they say it lacks depth or originality?

Saw it in IMAX 3d. Unbelievable movie expierence. Amazing movie. Very well done, and amazing new technology. Saw it again the other night in Digital 3D. I HOPE HOPE HOPE this is available in some 3D format for the home user. AND I can only HOPE again that the IMAX presentation is available. Just simply amazing.

If you haven't seen it in 3d, do so at the IMAX. And if IMAX isn't a option, sit eye level with the screen so that it fills your entire view to the point were you almost need to pan your view to see the screen.

I wanna see it in NON-3D now becuase the screen appears much more color-rific without the 3D glasses, especially brighter.

Nah, Attack of the Clones has a pretty good story IMO that's only hurt by the Love story that is not quite believable. As a whole, the plot of the Star Wars prequels isn't the problem.

Cuz GL sucks as an Actor's director, that's the Prequels BIGGEST problem. He is the "FASTER FASTER director like Michael Bay does not care about Oscar-worthy performances.

GL is a great storyteller (A quality that Michael Bay does not have), and great director with Action and Adventure and of course CG (He founded ILM) but James Cameron is certainly not far behind with Action/Adventure/CG and he is BETTER with actors!

Sometime you just have to do it slow, especially when dealing with acting.

I can tell you that we aren't paid to do the reviews, the fun part of it is (mostly) being able to keep what we review and giving an honest opinion on what we're reviewing.
